Rating: Summary: The Definition of "Romantic Comedy!" Review: This was actually one of the first videotapes I bought (remember when most videos were priced [really high?] Did anyone ever actually pay that amount?!). Having seen it close to 100 times over the years, it's a movie that's just perfect at Christmas time, since Nora Ephron seems to have a thing about putting the holiday season in her flicks (even as just the writer). The witty dialogue and the scenes where you can see yourself and your friends in them have virtually defined "romantic comedy" since this movie in 1989. This was the movie that sent Meg Ryan on her way to being the Queen of Romantic Comedy. This, along with "Sleepless in Seattle," etc. are movies that my wife and I can actually agree on, since they have enough romance for her and enough comedy for me!
Rating: Summary: This is pretty classic Review: I didn't see this movie until long after everyone else had, but I can see now why it's considered a classic. This is relatively early Meg Ryan establishing the persona she carries so well today. The idea of Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal being romantically involved has very little believability, but that doesn't affect the humor or the story. The movie did not strike me as typical Rob Reiner style with the exception of the humor. With Billy Crystal in it, you know you're going to get humor. It's a very he-said, she-said movie with a decent but small supporting cast. It may or may not be a must-own, but it's definitely a must-see.
Rating: Summary: Ok, I know this is being picky but.... Review: I liked this movie but I still can't get out of my head the fact that Billy Crystal is about 15 years older than Meg Ryan! And though it's not like as if people with those age differences don't, or shouldn't, date in real life, I think they should have had Harry be, say a graduate student at the beginning of this movie while Sally was an undergraduate, perhaps? It seemed as if Harry was supposed to be the same age as Sally, and I like Billy Crystal ok, but he did NOT look 22- 23 years old at all!
Rating: Summary: New York, New York Review: If you are looking for a comedy, dramatic, and love story setting then you should really watch "When Harry Met Sally". I really loved this movie because there was never a dull moment. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan where always keeping me enteretained with there whitty sense of humor. I really recommend this movie or DVD.
Rating: Summary: Great fun movie Review: I usually dont watch romantic comedies. But this movie is really good. I must say I have watched this movie dozens of times, and each time I liked it more. This is NOT just a chick flick. My only problem is the DVD, it was released as a special edition, but there is not much extras, and the directors commentary by Rob Reiner is very boring, he really has nothing to say. But I still recomend this movie!!!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely the greatest comedy! Review: The film is special because the situations depicted are so believable! I don't think there is chemistry between the actors; I don't believe that Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan's characters ring true as a couple (friends, yes). Nevertheless, the film is truly excellent because of its superb script, excellent direction, clever editing, and talented cast.
Rating: Summary: So Baby Fishmouth Is Sweeping The Nation...?? Review: Sorry, you'll have to watch this terrific movie to hear where that line comes in. This movie was a sensation when it hit the theaters, and has remained one of the funniest, most flawless movies to come out in a long time. This story of old acquaintances who become friends, end up lovers, then not, then...well, is timeless and universally appealing. This is one of those exceptional films that actually lived up to its hype, and then some. The trials and tribulations of dating, the games played, breaking up, man vs. woman, etc...and letting down your guard to let love in, are recognizable to most of us, which is what makes this movie so hysterical. No other film, with the exception of certain Woody Allen flicks, so perfectly captures that New York City dating scene, where everyone's trying their damndest to be so sophisticated and casual about it all, when in actuality, they're all equally scared, but just won't admit it !! The wonderful clips, interspersed within the film, of the long married older folks, whose rememberences of their courtships are the voices of reason in all this silliness, are a touch of genius by the skilled hand of director Rob Reiner. Several films tried to capture what this film has, all to no avail. This movie helped lead the way for shows like "Sex And The City". (Though not anywhere near as raunchy.) Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Bruno Kirby, and Carrie Fisher are all wonderful, and this film is just as funny and touching on the 10th viewing as on the first. Great songs, great cast, great film. One of the best.
Rating: Summary: This movie does not age well. Review: I can see how this movie could have been a great movie back in 1989, but after watching it for the first time some 13 years later, it really isn't that good.Billy Crystal is at his best as Harry Burns constantly spouting his philosophy on friendships and relationships and sex. Sally, played by Meg Ryan, is at first turned off by his agressive wit but soon they become best friends who refuse to acknowledge they may actually care for each other. The main reason why I didn't like this movie has to do with mostly factors besides the actual movie. If I had seen this movie in 1989 (and been the age I am now) I would have loved it. But instead I ended up comparing it to other romantic comedies that have come out since, including Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. Both of those were written by Nora Ephron, who wrote this movie. They also starred Meg Ryan and in my opinion were better than When Harry Met Sally or at least on equal ground. This movie is driven by the dialogue of Billy Crystal. All other characters in the movie react to him. Crystal's Harry Burns is a womenizer who constantly sleeps with women and then gets out of their lives as fast as possible. This was hard to believe first because Billy Chrystal doesn't look like a man who could get that many women, and second, the personality of his character Harry Burns is quite annoying. I guess it is to this movie's credit that it is the benchmark for Romantic Comedies to be compared to. I just think there have been many better romantic comedies to come along. This is an okay movie, but if you have never seen it, I wouldn't recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Widescreen? Yeah, right ! Review: Okay. I'm gettin' real peeved. Yet another MGM release under false pretenses. First of all, let me say that this is a very good movie...that's why I bought the DVD. But then, as I have before with many other MGM DVDs, I was greatly disappointed. This is another full-screen version with the black bars added to give the illusion of widescreen...Why does the studio continue to do this? My thinking is that it's a whole lot cheaper to digitally impose black bars on the screen rather than dig up the original widescreen transfer. Just take the more common full-screen edition, add black bars, and sell it to the public as widescreen...[they] won't know the difference. They're ripping you off, people.
Rating: Summary: Good Movie Review: When Harry Met Sally.... is a good movie about how the way women and men react to certain situations. The story goes as follows They both leave Chicago to go to New York and persue their dreams. After I think it's ten years, Harry's Marriage is on the rocks and Sally is dating. Afterwards it pretty predictable and they fall in love at the New Years Party 1989. Carrie Fisher was good and fell in love with Bruno Curby, which the wagon wheel part was hilarious. This movie was released the 12th of July 1989 and it grossed 92 million dollars. I recomend this movie to anyone who wants a good date movie or just to watch the jokes in the movie. Good Movie.
