Summary: Wonderful adaptation with classic Kate!
Review: This adaptation was FAR superior to the Hollywood version by Gwyneth Paltrow. For one thing, Kate Beckinsale truly "was" Emma. Intelligent, yet misguided, wanting to do the right thing, yet blinded by her own prejudices. This woman can act, unlike the "other" Emma, plus she looked like my ideal version of Emma. The writing was much closer to the book, particularly in the prominence of the Jane Fairfax/Frank Churchill story, which was virtually ignored in the other movie (maybe because the lovely Polly Walker who played Jane in the Hollywood version was too much competition for Gwyneth Paltrow). The village and the sets also seemed much less fake-looking than in the Hollywood film. If you want to see a great adaptation of a beloved novel, this is the one to pick.

Summary: Best production of this story I've ever seen.
Review: Having been a big fan of Jane Austen for 20 years, and having seen nearly every film version of any of her stories, I feel this particular production of Emma is the best. The casting is fabulous--far superior to the version starring Gwyneth Paltrow. As I watched Kate Beckinsale and the other actresses/actors, I felt as if the book had come to life!

Review: On occasion a little more fanciful than Miss Austen would surely have approved (e.g.Frank Churchill's portrait smiling seductively at our heroine), "Emma" was generally a very pleasing and thoughtful production. Prunella Scales proved an excellent Miss Bates,as did the lady who portrayed the vulgar upstart, Mrs"E".

Review: Pay attention - This is NOT NOT NOT the version with Paltrow!!!!! I have this version on VHS and the Paltrow version on DVD. Both are spectacular, with strengths in different areas. Beckinsale is marvelous in this, as she is in Much Ado About Nothing. I like Samantha Morton as Harriet more than Toni Collette (sorry, Toni). I much prefer Prunella Scales as Miss Bates in the A&E version, and am not fond of Ewan McGregor as Frank Churchill in the version starring Ms. Paltrow. However, I strongly suggest viewing both before making a choice!!!

Review: The characters look very bad, especially Emma. Kate Beckinsale is NOT beautiful and even looks evil. How can she portray the extraordinarily beautiful and lovable Emma Woodhouse? Also, the actor who plays Mr. Knightley doesn't look right. He doesn't really look like a noble, intelligent, and warm-hearted gentleman, which Georget Knightley should be. Frank Churchill doesn't look good and young enough, either. In my opinion, if the characters do not look right, nothing can be right.

Review: Although this version doesn't follow the novel as closely as the other, the storyline is much better and the actors are much more in character. I actually liked this movie better than the book!

Summary: Emma was a humourous, funny, and romantic movie.
Review: I loved both versions of Emma, although I felt that the Kate Beckinsdale version was better, because the portrial of Emma and the lifestyle lived at that time was better portrayed. I felt that the Paltrow version was to slow in getting to the point. Both versions of Emma are excellent!!! It's a must see movie!!!

Summary: A good adaptation - if a little dark
Review: I really liked the Kate Beckinsale version of this famous novel. However, I read the book, and it was intended as a humorous look at the "elite" in society. Gwyneth Paltrow's performance, as well as Mr. Knightly (in the Paltrow) version, seem to keep more in sync with Jane Austen's intended voice. Still, a great movie....watch both, and make your own comparisons. Both pick up different aspects of the original!

Review: The Kate Beckinsale Emma is far more a feisty and true to the novel characterization. Gwyneth Paltrow is so wan and ghostly- she doesn't have the true spirit of the character as written by Austen. As with all movie adaptations of these books something is lost once it gets to the screen but both are worth seeing. It's interesting to see the two different interpretations of the story.
