Summary: Far superior to the Gwyneth Paltrow version
Review: Compared to this version, the Gwyneth Paltrow version really does appear "clueless." This version of "Emma" is superb. Don't waste your time with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: THIS is Emma!
Review: VRY TRUE TO JANE AUSTEN'S BOOK. SAW THE 'OTHER' EMMA WITH PALTROW A WEEK PRIOR TO THIS ONE, AND I WASSTRUCK AT HOW POORLY WRITTEN AND ACTED THAT ONE WAS COMPARED TO THE BBC VERSION. I TRULY LOVED THIS FILM.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The Perfect Emma!
Review: I have to say that I love Jane Austen's book "Emma". I like it much better then her other works like Pride & Prejudice. So I'm glad that A&E did a version of "Emma" since they do such a good job at making great movies.
Anyway, this adaption of Emma is perfect! Much better then the Gwyneth Paltrow version.
Kate Beckinsale IS Emma. She was nice yet had that snotty air about her that Emma is suppost to have. Paltrow's Emma was to goody-goody. I thought the point of Emma was that she was a sort of a brat.
I love Mark Strong as Knightly. He was just PERFECT! I think Jeremy Northam did very well as Knightly in the GP's version of Emma but he looked to young. And I missed the scolding that Strong's Knightly did to Emma. JN's Knightly was to soft.
Raymond Coulthard is great as Frank Churchill. He's handsome and very charming. I can see why Emma found him pleasing. Ewan MaGregor who played Churchill in other version didn't seem to be right to play the part. And what was with his hair??? That's NOT cute!
I'm so glad that A&E did the whole Frank Churchill/Jane Fairfax thing that they DIDN'T show in the GP version.

Take my advise and buy this version. If you are a TRUE Jane Austen lover, you won't be disappointed.

Summary: Everything I wanted and more
Review: Absolutely wonderful adaptation. If you have to pick an Emma, this is by far the best.

Emma is endearingly flawed. She is perfect in her imperfections. And she sometimes interferes where she shouldn't. However, her intentions are always just and good from her point of view. Kate Beckinsdale is perfect as Emma mainly because the other characters are perfectly cast. Don't even imagine anyone else as Mr. Knightly!!! Mark Strong is perfect as Mr. Knightly in the way that Colin Firth is perfect as Mr. Darcy. Enough said.

See this movie. It's fun but also very touching as Emma discovers that the human heart is surprisingly difficult to understand.

Summary: Faithful
Review: This film version of Austen's best novel is very faithful to the text. Kate Beckinsale is perfect as Emma.

Summary: Perfection!
Review: I was lucky to see this Emma first before the one with Gwyneth Paltrow in it. This one was so good it made that Emma look bad. It was crisp and perfect. I loved it! Truly it is the best Emma that's come out yet!

Kate Beckinsale was Emma. She played naughty very nice! And her co-stars let me not forget...they were all great... the casting was perfect. The chemistry of the characters are unforgettable.

It is quite an adventure trying to figure out, if you've not seen Emma before, who loves who. It's enjoyable and plays miscommunication very well. I was quite fascinated with their lives and swept away.

Indeed the smug attitudes and mockery of one another and the misfortunes, and let me not forget the childish, prudish Emma make it a top choice.

Summary: The Best Emma adaptation.
Review: I love this version of Emma. It is a shame that it is so overlooked due to coming out shortly before a much larger production. The talented Kate Beckinsale is charming as the rich, spoilt but lovable Emma Woodhouse and she really carries the film. The supporting actors are solid and well cast, especially, Prunella Scales as Miss Bates and Mark Strong as Mr Knightley. Costumes and scenery are well done and it captures the essential Englishness evident in Jane Austen's work. It is far more accurate and serious compared to the 1999 film version with Gwyneth Paltrow and should stand as the ultimate adaptation of Emma.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: This version of "Emma" is much better than the Gwyneth Paltrow version, mainly because you don't get wrapped up in what star is playing what role. It's a warm, funny, good-hearted movie and I highly recommend it to anyone. I've had it on tape since it first aired on A&E, but the tape is so worn out, I repurchased it on DVD.

Summary: The better "Emma"
Review: As compared with the Gwyneth Paltrow version, the A&E version is by far the better "Emma". First, Kate Beckinsale was far better than Gwyneth in portraying the character. Gwyneth didn't make me believe she was an 18th century aristocratic lady, whereas Kate did. Second, the A&E version better portrayed the relationship between Mr. Knightly and Emma. Emma was much, much younger than Mr. Knightly, which was in keeping with the fashion of the day. Third, the character development was superior in the A&E version. Lastly, the A&E version was truer to the period than the one from Hollywood.

Bottom line, if you want a version of Emma that's truer to the period, go with the A&E version. If you want typical Hollywood fluff, go with either "Clueless" or the Gwyneth Paltrow version.

Summary: Not the Emma for me
Review: After viewing this version of Emma I was very disappointed ... The humor, tenderness,
and interplay between Emma and Mr Knightly was lost in this version. Get the other version for the music, story, characters and beauty of the unfolding love between Emma and Mr. Knightly.
