Summary: COULD HAVE BEEN A WINNER
Review: I WATCHED THIS MOVIE BECAUSE I THOUGHT KATE BECKINSALE WAS SO GOOD IN EMMA AND MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. THIS MOVIE WAS A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT. THE STORY WAS TOTALLY CONTRIVED. THEY CRINKLE THEIR NOSES AND SAY CUTE THINGS TO EACH OTHER THE DAY THEY MEET AND SEVEN YEARS LATER THEY CAN'T MARRY THEIR RESPECTIVE NEW LOVES BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FORGET WHAT THEY HAD TOGETHER. THEY SHOW THEM JUST MISSING EACH OTHER IN THE SILLIEST SCENES. THIS MOVIE COULD HAVE BEEN VERY CLEVER AND THE ONE "SCENE" (RATED R OR X) SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOTALLY LEFT OUT. THERE ARE MANY WAYS A MOVIE CAN SHOW A PERSON LOVES (OR SEEMS TO) SOMEONE ELSE. IT'S A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY

Summary: *Charming*
Review: In this enchanting romantic comedy, Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) met in Bloomingdale's during Christmastime when they both reach for the same pair of gloves on a rack. They spend the evening at an ice cream parlor, Serendipity (a real restaurant in NYC, meaning a fortunate incident). When it's time to go home, Sara gives Jonathan her phone number. As she's handing it to him, a gust of wind comes along and blows the piece of paper out of her hand. She believes that fate is telling them they shouldn't be together. So, she decides to write her number down in the book "Love in the Time of Cholera" and then sell it to a store and Jonathan also writes his number down on a five dollar bill. She thinks if they are meant to be together, Jonathan will find the book, or she'll come upon the money.Nearly ten years pass and both are engaged. As their wedding dates gets closer, Jonathan and Sara begin to think of each other. They're determined to try to find one another before it's too late. But is it already too late? This is truly one of the most charming movies I've ever seen. With Eugene Levy, Jeremy Piven and Molly Shannon also starring in this movie, it's a hit. Pick this one up today!

Review: John Cusack has definetley been better in alot of love films. What ever happened to High Fidelity or Better off Dead , or even
Grosse Point Blank. A totally unrealistic and sappy love story with an ending that wraps up nothing and it is only like 93 minutes long! I expected something more funny and enjoyable. Summary: A Great Romantic Comedy!
Review: This movie is awesome! You will love it! It is about two people who meet and try to buy the same pair of gloves. They fall in love, but Sara believes in destiny and fate. She has Jonathan write his name and number on a 5 dollar bill and she writes her name inside of a book. Sara says that they were meant to be together if the 5 dollar bill and book found its way back to each other. They go on for years wondering about each other. Will Sara and Jonathan find the objects the sent out in the universe and meet again? Or is it too late?

Summary: Mislabeled DVD Package
Review: While I thoroughly enjoyed the film and the excellent performances and would have given it a 5* rating, the DVD package is completely misleading. It lists a number of bonus features that are not available on the disk (at least the one I have). There is no director's comments available for the deleted scenes; there is no "On Set" feature; no director's notes and no storyboards. I do not understand why the packaging lists these features and then they are unavailable. One of the reasons I got the DVD was for these non-existant features. A real disappointemnt!

Summary: An unfortunate accident
Review: Shortly after Sara meets Jonathan, she tells him that serendipity, one of her favorite words, means "a fortunate accident." That two people who feel themselves "click" in a special way together can walk away from one another without having more to hold onto of the other's identity than a glove, is definitely an UNfortunate accident. Sara believes in letting fate decide what will happen between the two. And while the "signs" and "clues" that fate throws their way when they spend all those years apart are fairly believable and quite enjoyable to watch, what happens is predictible. Even so, it doesn't stop you from impatiently awaiting the grand finale when not fate, but love - will prevail.

Summary: Enchanting romantic comedy
Review: This charming romantic comedy has all the right ingredients and serves up a bouillabaisse of schmaltzy romance and slapstick fun. Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) meet in Bloomingdales when they both want to purchase the same pair of gloves. The attraction is instant and they spend a romantic evening cavorting around New York City together. At the end of the evening John wants to see her again, but Sara decides that if it is fate that they should be together, they will find each other again. She drives away in a cab and he never sees her again. Well, almost never. Years go by and both of them are about to be married, but each still has this nagging feeling that the other was his/her one true love. Of course fate conspires to bring them back together (after about a dozen near misses) as they each simultaneously undertake one last attempt to find one another just before they get married to someone else. The fate angle is plowed mercilessly, almost to the point of nausea, but the skits are funny and the chemistry between Cusack and Beckinsale is enchanting. Cusack is an expert at playing the tortured and neurotic lover, but here he is more haunted and forlorn than dysfunctional, and it plays much better than his previous two characters in "High Fidelity" and "America's Sweethearts". Kate Beckinsale rocketed from obscurity to prominence with her performance in "Pearl Harbor" and proves to be a wonderful romantic lead in this film. She is breezy and adorable and spins a delightful web around Jonathan and the viewer. The film also benefits from outstanding comedic support from Jeremy Piven as Jonathan's best friend and devoted Sara sleuth. Piven's zany comedy proves to be the perfect complement to Cusack's wry despondency. Eugene Levy is a scream as the eccentric Bloomingdales salesman, who blackmails Jonathan into buying half the store to give him information from Sara's charge account. All in all, this is an entertaining comedy that is insubstantial but delectable. I tend to give romantic comedies a little more slack, because I'm a sucker for this slush, and this is one of the better ones I've seen in a while so I rated it a 9/10. This lighthearted romp makes a great date flick, but if serious drama is your preference stay away.

Summary: A feel-good romance
Review: John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale were wonderfully cast in this film. I only wish they had spent more time together because I did not think that their chemistry was fully realized in the short scenes they had opposite each other. This is a fairly predictable romance which requires some suspension of belief, but it worked and left me feeling good....and that is just what I expected and wanted. Great cinematography and music added to my enjoyment. I wish that the two main characters had been portrayed as being more thoughtful about running away from their commitments...I was a bit uncomfortable with that. Otherwise, it was a delightful hour and a half.

Summary: Romantic comedy ingredients - with bad results
Review: This film epitomizes trite romantic comedy formula. It's as though ingredients were thrown onto an assembly line and Serendipity came out in the end. You'll notice this with the very first scene: an establishing shot of New York City at Christmas time. We hear Louis Armstrong in the score. Does this immediately seem familiar? John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale fight over a pair of gloves in Bloomingdales. Both are attracted to each other, but she refuses to move the relationship in the right direction citing that Fate should decide. All he's asking for is a phone number. I suppose if they did hook up in the first scene, the movie's over. Without revealing too many details, an annoying child in an elevator (dressed as the Devil - what symbolism!) avoids Fate from joining the two back together initially. We're then left with 80 more minutes of the two of them trying to get back together. I'm not opposed to the romantic comedy formula, so long as the characters and plot keep it engaging and somewhat realistic. This film is devoid of THOSE ingredients.

Summary: Proof that great actors can't save lousy writing
Review: It's like a college freshman's attempt at a Tracy/Hepburn film. Can one hang an entire tale on a used-to-be-trendy restaurant? Can one hope to add artistic/intellectual credibility by tossing in a Gabriel Garcia Marquez book as a plot device? One can certainly try, and someone did, but the results are beyond disappointing. John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Piven, and Eugene Freakin' Levy?!? Was this movie a trade-off for other projects they wanted to do? All four are accomplished, smart, talented actors but this flick was a D - O - G dog. I don't expect much depth out of a romantic comedy but it isn't much fun when you can not only predict what's going to happen, but you can actually predict what the actors are going to say minutes before they say it. Without John Cusack attached to it, I doubt this beast would pass muster as a Lifetime Television Movie.
