Summary: 'serendipicious' chemistry
Review: Unlike Shakespeare's tragedies and "sequels" featuring lovers in constant battle with and succumbing to the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortunes", Serendipity is bloodless and lovers seem to live happily ever after. The "fortunate accidents" though have been overused and the coincidences overkilled. After all, what are the chances of a five-dollar bill and a book circling around the world and ending into each other's hands many years after? Zero, but the point of this romantic comedy is carried so well by the actors, that we willingly believe. Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor) is a refreshing perfect fit for the role with just the right amount of sweetness, lightheartedness and comic touch. John Cusack complements Kate and the two have just what chemistry means - perfectly balanced.

Summary: Okay, the female character is this film was nuts! let's.....
Review: ...get that straight right now. Right about the time she has Cusack's character go up the elevator, I said to myself, "Has it come to this tragic end? Have men resorted to this foolishness all for the sake of a little hanky panky?" In this film, the answer is a resounding: YES! This is the classic chick flick, predictably strown together and containing no honest or real characters. Instead, we see a nutty British gal(Kate Beckinsale) trying to convince an apparently very lonely and desperate young man(John Cusack) that fate decides everything and, "if it's meant to be", it will be. Hmm, one can only wonder if this little gal from the UK is a full-pledged calvanist.....food for thought. ;-) As for the plot, Cusack quickly becomes obsessed with the girl, and destiny, or fate( I get to two confused), takes over and begins to show its magical powers. One can only predict what happens after watching the first fifteen minutes of this film. Now here's how it should have been: the girl, who is obviously insane from the get-go, convinces the guy that destiny will play its role. Well, so far, so good. The movie and my own views are hand in hand so far....time to take a more psychotic path..... Still my view:
The girl, as it turns out, is a sadistic temptress, trying to find her newest innocent male to mess with. The way she does things is she first gets her victims to believe in her phoney destiny mumbo jumbo and when they are totally obsessed with her, she dumps them like a cheap outfit after a Halloween costume party. After she has dumped Cusack, she turns to Richard Gere and instead of dumping him, forces him into marriage by believing he's about to father her baby. Once married, the British chick makes him clean the house in a maids uniform while singing, "Ain't No Woman Like The One I Got." Of course, that's just how I would have made the film. After you watch this movie, you can decide which one is better, my plot line or the one they have. Chow

Summary: Most enjoyable romantic comedy so far..
Review: What a gem! I was unsure of what to expect with this movie as I heard some mixed reviews. John Cusack is one of my favourite actors and I knew he *always* seems to brings something special to a movie and he came through again with this little gem of a film. Its a new genre for John Cusack in which I think he fits comfortably especially with his co-star. The only thing worth saying is not too much of the movie otherwise it will spoil the nice, quiet little suprises. John Cusack's character, Jonathon, is completely into Sarah (played by Kate Beckinsale) who he meets in department store and they end up just connecting in a very weird and wonderful way. After a magical night with no sleazy sexual connotations (thank god!) Sarah decides to leave their rematch in the hands of fate as she has a boyfriend and is looking for some universal signs that will allow her to follow her heart. It sounds corny however the actors have really taken a different approach but toning down the magical and mystical elements a little and letting real life let downs make their predicament more reachable and understandable which really pulls us into the movie. The supporting characters are quite a delight and when you see Jonathon's and Sarah's closest friends, you feel you are in for a treat - however they are suprisingly underused and you feel as though you wish you could have more time with them as you could imagine the lines that could be flying out of their mouths. The movie is too short for such a wonderful array of characters which is the only reason I give it 4 out of 5 stars - it is tooo short!! What I liked however was how the movie was not over idealistic that we should leave everything entirely in the hands of fate, and it didn't try to diminish all hopes about our lives having some meaning - a destiny. A point in the movie I thought - geez! - I hope they don't all come together at this function (I won't ruin the end) but the opportunity to completely spoil the movie was dismissed and I ended waiting in anticipation as to *how* they were going to end this movie!! Nice suprise and not mushy at all - but basically you feel that emotional intensity which drives us all time and time again to such movies - which is so dearly missed these days. Basically it suggets that even though you have a 'soul mate' and a predetermined life - it is still up to you to get there and find your way. And that if you don't you will spend your life still searching and longing as you feel you are on the wrong path - doesn't matter how much one denies it. Take on chance on this movie and you'll find this modest film will leave a great impression and find a little place in your heart.

Summary: Outstanding performances for a RC
Review: Funny enough you have to mention Jeremy Piven's role first, because while it could easily be called show-stealing, I don't think it does it justice. It was one of the best supporting acting jobs in a long time and was much better than Ian McKellan and Ethan Hawke, who were both nominated for Oscars, even though I enjoyed their performances. I didn't see the others for comparison. When he is done, you want go over to your best friend, smack him in the head, and ask him why he's so lame. He just exudes passion. Then there is John Cusack's subtle but effective performance. His built up haggardness during the chase is so good, you hardly notice it. By the time he has received the book and is in the cab with Piven, his anxiety and distress are absolutely palpable. And Kate Beckinsdale really enraptures you. The movie doesn't work without her because she is that adorable that you could see someone chasing her for years. That's not easy. We've all seen stars screw that up in other Romantic Comedies. Had Julia Roberts not half assed her way thru Notting Hill, it would have been even better. It's too bad for Kate, I think had it not for Amelie's release in the same timeframe in the US, she may have been heralded as this year's new ingenue. Plot is fun, but does require some dispending of disbelief, but who goes to a RC for pure reality. I think this is a great little film.

Summary: delightful romantic comedy
Review: This is a predictable romanctic comedy starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. The story opens with the two shopping in Bloomindales for a christmas gift for a loved one. Love at first site meets destiny, as they fall in love with each other. Then the female lead says she'll leave their relationship up to fate by writing her name and phone number inside a hardcover book then selling it to a used book store. Years pass, they search for each other, and go on with their lives and their original relationships, and continue to search for each other. I don't want to give any more of this predictable story away. It's a sweet love story, very well acted. Rent this one first, then if you fall in love with it invest in it.

Summary: This movie is dangerous
Review: This movie spreads all the wrong ideas about love. When the Kate Beckindale character won't give the John Cusack character her phone number or name, unless they have a sign from "fate", I was hoping he would throw up his hands in digust and decide to go be in a better movie. Alas. The idea the the female lead's behavior is forgivable or even acceptable is just plain wrong. This sort of belief in "fate" is what leads some people to disregard real happiness right in front of them for some distant ideal which may never materialize. This movie has plenty of other problams as well, including the presence of Molly Shannon, who while funny, just doesn't fit in to the movie's tone. This movie is a sad excuse for a romantic comedy.

Review: You can have a lot of fun tracking the career of John Cusack. He started out as the crazy teen in movies like ÒBetter Off DeadÓ and ÒThe Sure Thing,Ó and he came into his own in the romantic-comedy-drama, ÒSay Anything.Ó Since then, he has done black comedy (ÒGrosse Pointe BlankÓ), drama (ÒThe GriftersÓ), offbeat (ÒBeing John MalkovichÓ) and action (ÒCon AirÓ). But he still seems at his best in the romantic comedy, and is the highlight of ÒSerendipity.Ó Cusack plays a TV producer who falls head over heels for a psychologist, played to perfection by Kate Beckinsale, even though the two meet by chance for only a few hours one Christmas. Several years later, both are engaged to others, but still canÕt get each other out of their minds. ÒSerendipityÓ is a well-paced exercise in frustration, as we root for the chance lovers to find each other but watch as they march toward fates that neither seems to fully embrace. Yet, as every good romantic comedy must do, it rewards the viewer with a satisfying, if unconventional, ending that makes the movie worth watching again and again. Simply based on its reputation, I added ÒSerendipityÓ to my DVD collection. After watching it, I have added it to my regular viewing rotation. ItÕs a good date movie, but more than that, itÕs just fun to watch.

Summary: A depressing waste of some fine actors.
Review: John Cusack is one of my all-time favorite actors, and clearly a smart person, too--I can't think of another bad film he's done. And Kate Beckinsale is reliably interesting, as well as beautiful. So I can't figure out how they wound up in this half-hearted loser of a movie. In addition to numerous irritating implausibilities (starting with Cusack not knowing the definition of "serendipity"), the main characters have no, well, characteristics, beyond their obsession with each other. Cusack ultimately treats the woman in his life horribly, but we're supposed to forgive him because he does it all for true love. Yuck. It's a shame, because this promised to be the kind of fluffy New York love story we all needed this past year. It seems as if either the movie got edited to death after production, or the writer just didn't care enough to make the story interesting in the first place--I can't tell which. In any case, "Serendipity" turns out to be a sad waste of time and talent. If you're a Cusack fan, get "Say Anything," "High Fidelity," "The Grifters," or even "Grosse Pointe Blank." If Beckinsale's the one you want to watch, try "Haunted," "Cold Comfort Farm," "Last Days of Disco," or even "Brokedown Palace."
