Rating: Summary: Completely original and enjoyable romantic fable. Review: For those reviewers naysaying this film I have but one piece of advice: lose the cynicism. This movie is full of heart. The two main characters are utterly unique and endearing. You were hoping for something more mainstream? More cookie-cutter? Then don't watch. For those who truly know the difference between good movies and bad, this is a great film for transcending these normal expectations. Rushmore is a classic for all time, on the level of The Graduate.
Rating: Summary: This movie is fresh, silly and has heart. Review: If you love quirky characters and stories you will enjoy this film. Created by the same team that made BOTTLEROCKETS you will find, charaters that are flawed but interesting. I am thinking of getting the soundtrack because it is so different but enjoyable to listen to. Bill Murray was perfect in this.
Rating: Summary: An enjoyably quirky black comedy! Review: Bill Murray gives what is perhaps the best (certainly the most understated) performance of his career in this unusual comedy, but it is Jason Schwartzman as Max Fischer who steals the show. It is easily the most unselfconscious performance of the year; fresh and exciting, but surprisingly mature considering Schwartzman's relative inexperience (though being Talia Shire's son can't hurt matters). This movie is definitely not for everyone, and there were times watching it when I fidgeted in my seat at how utterly unlikeable the two main characters could be. But it won me over in the end with its spirit and irreverence. If your tastes run toward more mainstream Hollywood fare with neat and tidy endings and cardboard characters, "Rushmore" is probably not for you. But you enjoy slightly off-center comedies like "Dazed and Confused" and "Zero Effect", this is definitely one to add to your collection. If only Buena Vista had seen fit to give it the special edition treatment this DVD deserved. As is, all we get is a non-anamorphic transfer with only a trailer as an extra. Par for the course from the mouse.
Rating: Summary: Best Comedy in a long time Review: You have to have intelligence to understand this subtley hilarious movie. This movie requires multiple viewings! I get a different perspective and laugh out of every viewing. This is not blatantly outrageously funny Jim Carrey-esque slapstick; it's intelligent, meaningful, funny nonetheless. Brilliant debut performance from Jason Schwartzman, who plays a 15 year old who writes epic plays, excels in extra-curricular activities, and fails most of his classes. Also a great performance from Bill Murray in the most different role he's ever played. The scene where he "drowns" out his life is very telling and well done. This is a must-own movie. The Faces song "Ooh La La" sums it all up at the end -- "I wish I knew all that I know now when I was younger."
Rating: Summary: I Loved This Movie!!! Review: If you liked Harold and Maude you'll love this movie. Bill Murray is hilarious, and the movie has some touching scenes as well as the usual Murray-hamming-it-up scenes. I saw this movie in the theatre after reading some really good reviews, and it was wonderful. It also helps that the soundtrack features a lot of Cat Stevens tunes.
Rating: Summary: THIS MOVIE IS BETTER THAN CITIZEN KANE! Review: This is a great American film. The performances are amazing, Bill Murrys best film since Razors Edge. The writing is incredible, best writing since Wes Anderson's last film Bottle Rockett. The soundtrack is incredible, best soundtrack ever. If you have half a brain you will vote Rushmore for President next year. This film compeled me to buy a kite. It's just that good!
Rating: Summary: Notes on the Production Review: I knew RUSHMORE was going to be a fantasticly intelligent film, and one of the best of this decade, a year before it came out to theaters. I had the privilege and honor to be called in to be an extra (I can be seen at the play's after-party scene during the long tracking pan right behind the principal action) and then asked to fill in a space as the stand-in for Mr. Cassel (Bert Fischer)during the closing days of principal shooting in Houston, Texas. Wes Anderson's brilliance was obvious despite his looking like an A/V nerd. But he was constantly maintaining cinematic assurity in every shot (the cinematography appeared to be 100% pre-planned well in advance). And he has left an indelible mark on the film industry, not soon to be forgotten or dismissed. I shall never forget the pleasure I had working with it. And then the added euphoria I experienced seeing it on the big screen for the first time, as well as the video release. Oscar should be ashamed.
Rating: Summary: Best Movie I've ever seen Review: i saw this movie shortly after it came out on video and was extremly suprised at how funny and original it was.it was a perfect balance of comedy and drama.i've seen tons of movies in my life but if i had to choose just one, this would be it.
Rating: Summary: Dull ... Dull ... Boring , Bill Murray at his worst Review: We could not wait for the movie to end. In fact, we didn't, although my S.O. hung in to the end hoping it would improve. She said it didn't. Bill Murray was abused by his embarrassing role as a rich man with mouth hanging open, dumb, lost look in eyes, catering to an unrelated 15 year old's whim's & wishes. The notion of a 15 year old who acted and looked more like 22, who was the class nerd but also the bad sheep and at the same time the head of every extra-curricular school activity was not only far-fetched, but appeared to be written by a real 15 year old class nerd with poor writing skills on an extreme day dream away from reality. Poorly written, unbelievable characters, and drawn out and slow, and only one semi-funny line in the whole affair.
Rating: Summary: an instant classic Review: Rushmore belongs in the pantheon of great film comedies (you know, that VERY short list that includes Annie Hall and precious few others). A film of grace, humor, and unexpected warmth. It's a damn shame those clods at the Academy didn't nominate Bill Murray for best supporting actor. In short: I have seen the future of American cinema, and it's name is Wes Anderson.
