Summary: Sweet, entertaing, but not an Academy Award nominee
Review: For the small town girl who has moved to the big city, this movie reminds us all of the idealistic small town life with the small town first love. Although life doesn't also seem as sugar-coated as this film depicts, this is a nice romantic comedy for people of all ages.

Reese Witherspoon effortlessly pulls off the role as the small town girl turned big city designer. Believable and fun to watch, she dazzles on the screen, as always.

This is a sweet movie I can watch over and over again when looking for a light, fun movie.

Review: Wowzah! This movie was just awesome!

Reese Witherspoon plays a great character, Melanie Carmichael, who owns her own line of clothes and is proposed to by her current boyfirned, who is the son a candidate for mayor. The only problem - Melanie is still married to her childhood sweetheart!

Yes, I know this is short, and only a sum of the movie, but it's great and all I can tell you is watch it.

Summary: Classless warfare.
Review: First of all, how can a woman be named Reese Witherspoon? I guess my only complaint about this movie--besides its absurdity--is all those Hollywood actors talkin' with them phony southern accents.

It might seem like a small detail but it reinforces the stereotypes of the two most disliked groups in our country: New Yorkers and Southerners. Some will say this is deserved and I can't disagree but snobs vs. hillbillies just isn't very funny or touching to me.

Summary: A GOOD Movie
Review: I've read, like, sixty reviwes of this movie and a lot of them say that this mvie is "way too predictable, a bit of fluff"
Well, what were you expecting, a second Sound of Music?
I watch movies to cheer me up, and Sweet Home Alabama definatley did that. Yes, it was predictable, but hey, that's what romanitic comedies are. Reese Witherspoon made a great Melanie and Josh Lucas did a good job playing Jake.
The main plotline is this:
Melanie is an up-and-coming fashion designer in NY. The mayor's son proposes to her but whoops, she's already married. So she goes down to Alabama to get a divorce, but for some inexplicable reason her husband won't divorce her. She tries nearly everything to get him to divorce her, but he still won't. So she basically stalks him until he does.
In the mean time she has to hang around her hometown. She goes and sees all her old friends, and when they ask her what she does she says, "I'm a clothing designer."
OK, maybe you people didn't get this, but this is a joke. She starts to question how important what she does really is when the hundreth person is like, "And your point is...?"
So Jake finially signs the papers but the betrothed comes down, so she stays to. Except whoops, she's falling in love with Jake all over again.
As for those of you who think that Jake was perfectly fine, let me clue you in:
Melanie married Jake right out of high school because she was pregnant. He was such a loser he was too drunk to come to the wedidng reception, for Pete's sake.
Meanwhile her husband-to-be's mother is trying to dig up dirt on Melanie and she suceeds.
So basically what we have here is a cute, true romantic comedy with cool characters and some touching moments. Am, um, I'm a native North Carolinian, and I found the southern stuff funny instead of offensive. I suppose if you're really touchy you might be offended by that, but in my opinion it was fine. Sweet Home Alabama is cute, true, and very engaging. I, for one, loved it.

Summary: Funny, sweet, a laugh-out-loud romance!
Review: I found this quite good, and the characters quite funny and endearing. The film did take a little longer getting to the conclusion than it should have... but all in all, it was a fun offbeat romantic adventure that was worth the ride.

Witherspoon's character may have appeared to have created the perfect life, but in the long run she is drawn back to the country when she returns to tie up the last loose ends of her past life. This is a little more than just an offbeat romance, when Witherspoon's character must come to grips with her reaction and feelings towards her family and past. This is actually quite good, and I recommend it.

Summary: Could Be Better
Review: Rich son of big-city mayor proposes to fashion-designer girlfriend, despite his mother's misgivings about her. The newly betrothed fiancee realizes she has some unfinished business, though, in the form of the redneck hillbilly backwoods husband she left seven years prior.

Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) is riding high. Her recent fashion show went off perfectly, and the man of her dreams (Patrick Dempsey) has asked her to marry him. One problem - she needs to get her husband Jake (Josh Lucas) to sign the divorce papers. So she hightails it down to Alabamy, anxious to get the papers signed so she can get on with her life.

Ah, but not so fast. Jake's not letting her off the hook that easily. Nope, first he calls the cops on her, since she appropriates his spare key and enters his (their) house. When the sheriff discovers they're still married, though, he holds up his hands and calls it a domestic dispute. Jake won't sign the papers, he says, because she's turned into a a high-class, highfalutin, effete snob. Ok, those are my words, not Jakes, but you get the picture. Our little girl has some growing up to do!

Much of the plot has to do with culture clash - Melanie walking down Main Street gabbing on a cell phone, Melanie in a honkytonk bar shootin' pool while women with babies linger nearby. This is all that Melanie left when she escaped from her tiny hometown seven years ago to make it on her own, and naturally at first she can do nothing more than turn up her nose at everything in the hamlet.

Ah, but of course she's due for her comeuppance, and that's where Jake and the rest of the town come in. Someone must be Taught a Lesson, else it wouldn't be much of a movie. Jake refuses to sign the papers so Melanie can be Taught a Lesson.

A movie like this has to be taken for what it is - a dumb comedy. It doesn't pretend to be anything fancy or all-important. It's not self-involved or overly pensive. It's a simple plot driven by simple characters, buttressed by a traditional soundtrack.

The movie's buoyed by some appealing performances, but Witherspoon's isn't one of them. I've often considered Reese Witherspoon to be nothing more than a flavor of the month blonde, because she offers no real nuance to her acting - everything's broadly done. Her characters in Legally Blonde, Election, and Sweet Home Alabama bear striking similarities. Sure, maybe she's being typecast, but if that's the case, perhaps she needs to try something that'll stretch her talents a little.

No, the best performance is by Josh Lucas as Jake. Lucas's piercing eyes and laid-back grin serve him well as Jake, whose upbringing and background belie (in the eyes of Melanie, at least) a wealth of intelligence, wisdom, and depth. Lucas is very appealing here, knowing but not omniscient; able to love but stubborn - much like the stereotypical southern man, come to think of it. Lucas doesn't come off as a typical pretty boy, though, unlike Dempsey as Melanie's intended. Candice Bergen and Jean Smart shine in their brief roles.

This is a popcorn film that's aimed at people looking for a few good chuckles. With any culture-clash movie, you're bound to get some laughs because the viewer is apt to be on one side of the cultural fence or the other and therefore will find something to which he or she can relate. Happily, the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, as well it shouldn't, considering the characters are cardboard cutouts and the plot is predictable. This kind of simplistic movie usually works fine, but the abrasiveness of Melanie brings the whole film down a couple of notches.

Summary: Chick Flick Romantic Comedy
Review: I watched Sweet Home Alabama with my sister and we both liked it and thought it was a cute romantic comedy and this is a movie I may consider buying for my DVD collection because like most girls I like a good romantic comedy and this in my opinion is a good one and I have several romantic comedies in my DVD collection and this is worthy to be in it and this is a chick flick that is entertaining and fun and not one of those boring ones and I recommend it to anyone who likes romantic comedy chick flicks, also Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey are both good actors and so cute! Btw: Even though I like this movie there were moments where I hated the character of Melanie when she was being so mean to everyone and that is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5 and why at first I thought I wouldn't want to buy the DVD for my romantic comedy DVD collection but I will probably buy the DVD.
