Rating: Summary: Real People Review: You've Got Mail is a surprisingly good movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan who were the perpetrators responsible for the horrendous Sleepless in Seattle. Hanks plays a superbox bookstore magnate named Joe Fox. Fox's company has plopped down a megastore next door to Meg Ryan's character's (Kathleen Kelly) trendy New York children's bookstore that was opened by her mother.Kelly and Fox are locked in mortal combat over the survival of her store against the behemoth. At the same time they each meet someone online that they find very interesting. What they don't know is that they are each other's mystery person. The key to this particular movie being better than most in this genre is that it treats the main characters as real people and not some cardboard cutouts whose only purpose is the furtherance of the plot. Most times in these types of movies you never have any doubt as to whether or not the main characters are going to get together. Even though you obviously know that will be the outcome in this one, there is no guarantee that it's going to be an easy transition from heated enemies to even friends. Meg Ryan is usually a little too sickening sweet for me. I find her typical character naive and too angelic for a real world situation. The exceptions to this have been When Harry Met Sally, Courage under Fire, and this movie. She even gets believably angry in this movie. Tom Hanks gives his typical five star performance. It's just too bad he doesn't do any more real comedic performances and that he limits himself to roles that are only charming and not funny. You've Got Mail is a good effort from a tired genre.
Rating: Summary: Good romantic comedy Review: I usually steer clear of any film that has something to do with romance, but I wanted to see this one because of Tom Hanks being in it. I surprisingly liked it. It basically just has a lot of humerous situations throughout the movie building up to the tear jerking ending. Definetly a movie worth seeing.
Rating: Summary: You've Got Mail Review: I find the film You've Got Mail well-made-- and disturbing. Does the two owners' falling in love justify a monopolistic bookstore chain intentionally swallowing a small business that has been a high-quality resource for generations? The film explored this issue up to a point and then subsumed it in the love story. Kathleen Kelly gave up something that had real vitality for her and I was far less convinced that what she was moving into would have as much richness and soul. Love sometimes does seem to swallow and pound one into a new shape, and that's frequently all to the good, but I didn't see that level of passion and depth explored here. It was just cute, and the cuteness allowed an insidious message to slide by.
Rating: Summary: pap Review: This film is utter pap.It seems that Hollywood is willing to slap these two together and regurge Sleepless in Seattle for a few million. And it seems that America as a whole has come like sheep to follow Hollywood.Tom Hanks has way too much talent to waste on a wooden flick such as this. Meg Ryan needs to get more sleep and get rid of the undereye circles before she can claim her cutsie status again. Not to mention, when is she going to grow up and start doing adult movies with real characters instead of fluff pieces.I felt like the time I spent watching this movie could have been better spent clipping toenails for gods sake.
Rating: Summary: A great Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks movie Review: Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks do a great job together in You've Got Mail like they do in all their movies. There's not many duos that could do better and You've Got Mail is certainly no exception. You've Got Mail takes you where many of us are experienced, the internet. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks fall in love while talking to each other over instant messages and e-mails every day. All the while, they're bigtime business rivals and they don't even know it. Tom Hanks opens a new and real successful bookstore right across from Meg Ryan's. Meg's bookstore has been there for many many years and since Tom's bookstore moved across the street, Meg's bookstore has been suffering more and more each day and is so bad it might have to go out of business. The whole time throughout the rival between the two with the successful bookstores, they exchange on the internet and don't find out until the end who they've been talking to. If you're a fan of the other Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks movies or if you like getting on the internet and know what it's like to get to know or meet people over the computer, then you will probably like this movie a lot.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Although I love both Ryan and Hanks, this sappy love story left much to be desired. The chemistry between them was great, but the writing was bad and I left the theatre feeling thouroughly let down. What a disappointment!
Rating: Summary: Three stars for cute Review: I only have one question. Who took the 5 out of the 5.1 soundtrack.
Rating: Summary: Charmless in New York Review: This has little of the charm of the original "The Shop Around the Corner," nor even that of the previous Hanks-Ryan pairing, "Sleepless in Seattle." What might have been a smart transplanting of the story to the 90s turns out to be banal, manipulative and hugely unfunny. Not to mention inconsistent: Ryan's defender of small neighborhood businesses jacks into the Internet through AOL and buys her coffee at Starbucks. Watch the original. Ephron, Ephron, Hanks and Ryan simply have nothing to add.
Rating: Summary: Spare us the pain... Review: Brainless... unoriginal... predictable... unfunny... it's not evenwell acted... it's not even well filmed... it doesn't even have campyvalue... a complete waste of time, money, and energy. Stare at the wallinstead, you might see something interesting.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as "The Shop Around the Corner" Review: I thought is was good movie, and the e-mail thing was an interesting twist on 'The Shop Around the Corner', but who can beat James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan? I also agree with some of the earlier reviews that said that Tom Hanks is getting a little old for a role like this. This movie is defenitly worth seeing though, and there are alot of funny lines in it.
