Summary: Script, timing and superb acting
Review: Well! AFCW I saw only last year, ten years after it came out. I recognised Cleese and Palin (big Python and Fawlty Towers fans over here!) and the locations - mainly because I live there. The best bits are the Kline outbursts and impersinations, the best being at the end, "'Fraid so old chap, sorry!" I suppose the Americans would like the whole anti-UK. No? Why not, we're all anti-US when watching it! The outstanding point from this film, apart from the magnificent timing is the music. Why on earth has John du Prez's score not been released properly in the world? The many different tunes for the many different scenarios made me laugh out loud sometimes. The speed of the film helps make it work I think. At the end, a feel good film which should by viewed by two people together; one American, one English. Que the Cleese-Kline parody...

Summary: It's k-k-ken, coming to k-k-kill me!
Review: When I first heard about this movie, I thought it would be stupid (who ever heard of a film with a name like "A Fish Called Wanda"?) but rest assured, this is the greatest movie! It had me rolling around on the floor the first time I saw it, and I find that when I watch it agin the effect has not lessened on me one bit. This movie has super actors, I mean, they're all just great. I also love this movie because while it is packed with plenty of wonderous Monty Python humor, it is also a little bit more serious, and you feel a real closeness and affection (or, in Otto's case, hatred) for the characters. It's great fun, with super dialogue and a good ending (which is sometimes rare in comedies). There may be a couple raunchy scenes and some cursing in "Wanda", but it's all halarious. This is a movie for everyone. It's my all time favorite. I love it. A huge hooray for Kevin Kline, Jaimie Lee Curtis, Michael Palin, and especially John Cleese.

Summary: Still funny after all these years.
Review: Until I bought the dvd I'd forgotten what a good film Wanda is. So much of it is still funny after over ten years (especially the dog killing scenes) though a few bits and pieces seem longer than they did (e.g. the less-than-hilarious scenes in Archie's house while his wife and daughter are out). Michael Palin remains the true star but really, there's not a poor performance anywhere. Apart from the longeurs mentioned above, the only bugbear - and its a minor one - is that the dvd is just a re-heated video. I would have expected something a bit more advanced given the potential of the new format.

Summary: They don't make comedies like this anymore.
Review: What can be said? In the eleven years since this film was made, no other comedy has reached its heights. Wonderful comic timing, excellent dialogue, good actors, witty script, and the right amount of Pythonesque craziness and non-PC-ness when it comes to stutterers, little old ladies and their dogs, and other delicate subjects.

"And, Otto... The London Underground is NOT a political movement!!"

Summary: A modern movie with Monty Python flare
Review: A Fish Called Wanda deserved every major award possible. The mixture of both American and British actors were wonderful. Kevin Kline deserved his Oscar for this role as Otto.

Summary: What's so funny?
Review: This movie was so over-hyped when it was released. Honestly, what is so funny about it? Kline comes across as a bad actor, Cleese and his script are out of it, and Curtis is just annoying.

I guess we Americans have a very low bar when it comes to labeling comedies "great."

Summary: I love this movie so much!
Review: I first saw this movie in a little basement room in a college building near my school with my best friend, and though my friend had seen it before, we both came close to falling out of our seats if fits of hysteria. This is the funniest movie ever! (Except perhaps for Monty Python, and if you like that, you'll love this.) My favorite scenes in this movie includes the killing-the-dog scenes, just because those are so random and so hillarious, and the scene where Otto (Kevin Kline) ties poor stuttering Ken (Michael Palin from Monty Phython) to a chair and sticks french fries up his nose and eats Ken's fish. I Love this movie so much. Everyone possessing an ounce of humor (and even those who don't) should see it!

Summary: Warning: If you see this film, you may laugh to death.
Review: Wow! This movie was a real hilarious film! The humor by Kevin Kline is real funny. I think this guy deserves an Oscar for acting in this film.Anyways, people who are anxious about some smiles and laughs, SEE THIS FLICK!

Summary: An extremely funny and memorable film.
Review: This is an extremely funny and memorable film and the DVD brings it home is style...mostly. The video clarity is second to none and obviously taken from the digital master (so is the VHS version). However the audio is not 5.1 nor Pro Logic but simply stereo. It really is too bad the audio was not remastered but the video quality redeems it. A wonderful DVD to ad to your collection.

Summary: Great Movie - OK DVD
Review: I love the movie "A Fish Called Wanda". It is one of my all time favorite movies. If you haven't seen it, go rent/buy it - there is no better time to see it, now that it is on DVD!

Therefore, this is a review of the DVD - not the movie. The DVD has a very good presentation of the movie - the best you can watch at home (as mentioned above). However, the sound is lacking - dull mono. Maybe this movie was originally recorded in mono, but I would be surprised.

Next there is the lack of extras - you get the trailer and "cast notes" but virtually nothing else... just a dumb fish screen saver.

I don't mean to be so down on this DVD, it isn't terrible, it is just a disappointment to think of all of the unrealized potential. First of all, there is the sound. Then, there was no behind the scenes featurette, no comentaries, no deleted scenes, nothing. With Kline, Cleese, Palin and Curtis in the cast, there could have been all kinds of killer extras. But there wasn't...

At this point I would give this DVD 3 stars. However, it earns an extra star because MGM bowed to pressure and put it out in Widescreen. They originally planned on P&S only.

So thanks a lot, MGM, but now get busy on a "Collectors Edition".

Jeremy
