Summary: Vive le Paris!
Review: Having had the opportunity to live in Paris, and to have seen this movie twice, the title really say it all. Fabulous. Anyone who has a desire to see or a love of Paris must see this film. It is a sweet heartfelt film, which can even the biggest cynic a beleif in destiny.

Summary: Simply Fantastic
Review: There are two French movies that I consider must-see: The Grand Illusion and Amelie. Amelie is funny, sad, happy, romantic, mysterious, strange, absurd, sexy, cute, and just fun. Brief synopsis: Innocent Amelie is trying to find the mystery of happiness and this is the story of what happens on the journey. What made the movie for me was the way each character is described in intimate detail. I've never seen this technique used before. Basically, the movie pauses when you meet a central character and you are told about his/her background, habits, likes, dislikes, etc. Besides being very funny, it brings you even closer to Amelie's world. One last thing: The bit with the garden gnome is worth the price of the ticket! See it, buy it.

Summary: Creative, charming, happy -- not your average French film
Review: This is one of the most touching films I've watched in a while. Amelie is a unique kid, relying on imagination to fill in the gaps left by not having schoolmates or friends (she's homeschooled). Flash forward to her early 20s -- a time when she's living a quiet life, keeping to herself. You eventually learn that she's a bit lonely.

Then one evening she by chance discovers a box hidden behind the wall of her apartment. Amelie undertakes the task of reuniting the box with its original owner, thinking 'If this works, I will make it my mission to bring other people happiness'. Well, it does work and she begins to step into other people's lives and point them in the direction of happiness. However, she is so caught up in others she barely thinks of how her life could be happier.

And then she sees a man collecting discarded photo booth photos. She is very intrigued. The second time she sees him, she ends up in possession of his photo album of rejected photos. This is the beginning of a lovely and humorous story of the attraction of the two of them, and everything they do (and don't do) to see each other and for him to reclaim his album.

While it's possible to look at this film and see the loneliness and hopelessness of some of the characters (Amelie's co-workers are so resigned to their lives she has to metaphorically kick them to make them realize they are live creatures with emotions), this film also works to show that a little bit of ingenuity and motivation can forever change a life. Amelie also shows that if one person makes an effort, it will have a ripple effect and more than one person will reap the benefit if a single person is shown happiness.

Jeunet, half of the creative team for Delicatessen and City of Lost Children, created a intelligently creative, beautiful, uplifting film. This is easily the funniest, sweetest and happiest French film released in I don't know how long. Leaving the theater, I heard someone say "Everyone should be required to see this film." I agree completely.

Summary: Love Affair with Paris
Review: I saw this movie on a Swissair flight back to the US frpm Europe. Whenever I can, I visit Paris on my trips abroad. This time I could not but seeing this movie was a lovely substitute. The film is beautifully written and directed; well acted and the type of movie which, had it been filmed in the United States might have starred Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. The slice of Parisian life is beautifully done; more importrantly it can give the viewer an understanding of the importance of neighborhoods in the city. It is witty, sensitive and fun.

Summary: A little slice of Celluloid Heaven.
Review: This is one of those extraodinary movies that makes the world seem better after you've seen it. Directed with his usual eye for off kilter beauty, Jean Jeunet presents us with the Paris of fantasy, the one we allways knew was there (underneath all the dog poop and the public urination). The charm of Paris is surpassed only by the staggering loveliness of lead actress Audrey Tautou as she searches for inventive ways to better the lives of those around her. Your feet wont touch the ground for hours after you see this film, it even makes the subway ride home magical.

Summary: dreamy...
Review: a great cast, and a perfect star. an adorable film all around - Audrey Tautou has the magnetism and down to earth-edness of audrey hepburn and julia roberts, and a subtle vulnerability that's definitely more endearing than Ally McBeal's. Cute, funny, visually fantastic, this movie is great for any age, and any french-speaking level (none to fluent). There's enough action to follow along, even if you watch the French version (le fabuleux destin d'amelie poulain, which i saw twice in Paris). I'm not sure if miramax's "Amelie" will be dubbed en anglais or with subtitles. Easily on my Top 5 list of all time. If you're a fan of movies, you MUST check this one out!

Summary: One of the best movies I have ever seen!
Review: I had the good fortune to see this film on a transatlantic flight. This is one of the most life affirming, joy inducing films ever made. I can hardly wait until it is released on DVD so I can watch it repeatedly.

Summary: whimsy or another commonplace of love quest?
Review: the movie remains to be a touching movie until she started to seek for her truth love. a commonplace of love quest which can only be achieved by your first courageous step. however the movie is stunning with the colour-saturated mise en scene and the pretty actress, audrey tautou.

Summary: The Best foreign film of 2001
Review: This film takes an amazing journey through the heart and soul of every patron in the theater audience. A wonderful film full of all human emotions from whole-hearted laughing to a sad tear that slipped out of my left ball (eyeball). It's defiantly a foreign film. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
