Summary: Not my favorite Clancey story...
Review: This is a movie about historical political conflict, revenge, and hate, and an innocent man and his family who happen to get caught in the middle of all of that.Ford does an excellent job as Jack Ryan, and Bean does a great job as the man out to avenge the death of his brother. The only reason I gave this movie 4 stars is that I have never liked this story as well as other Clancey tales, and there is a lack of consistency between the movie and the book (there always is). Still, it's worth a look, especially if you are a Harrison Ford fan.

Review: This is a wonerful film, much better than Clear and Present Danger an right up there with the Hunt For Red October. I can't say much about this movie its just one of my all-time favorites. If you want a great moviie, buy this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Clancy could take pointers from his movie adaptation
Review: Tom Clancy was reportedly less than enthused about the big screen adaptation of his book Patriot Games. But,like most authors, Clancy doesn't seem to realize that movies are a different medium that require screenwriters and directors to make changes and augmentations for an entertaining product. And they acheived that with Patriot Games. More mature and grim than The Hunt for Red October, this is by far the best of the Jack Ryan movies. This time, the studio got it right when they cast Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan instead of Alec Baldwin. Ford, allbeit, is more awkward-moving in the action scenes, but that simply adds to the realism of the movie. Ford also has a certain haggardness that makes him look on the brink of burnout (just the way most put-upon government officals usually look). The writers also did the series a service by expounding upon Ryan's family life. Anne Archer (as the ideal 90's wife) conveys the right amount of maternal concern and strength needed. And unlike in Hunt, there are some good villians. Patrick Bergin and Sean Bean are suitably cold-blooded as the IRA assassins gunning for Ryan. Patriot Games doesn't get bogged down in the minutiae of dark room meetings and detail like Hunt did earlier. Patriot Games simply tells its tale better, more efficiently.

Summary: This movie is an utter waste of two hours of life.
Review: Perhaps what makes me most angry about this movie is the way the Irish Republican Army is portrayed in it. They are portrayed as tit-for-tat, blow-up-the-world, psyco-killer terrorists!! I'm sorry, Harrison, but the IRA wouldn't send a whole bloody brigade to America and try to exterminate your family just for nailing Sean Bean's brother! Don't flatter yourself, love! I think anyone who wishes to see a movie that CORRECTLY portrays IRA men should see "Some Mother's Son." It's a wonderful movie based on FACT, not fiction.

Review: Patriot Games is one of the best action movies I have ever seen. This movie never slowed down. It was a lot like the book. The movie has a very intense plot. This movie is awesome and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Summary: Slasher films a poor substitute
Review: For sheer excitement on the edge of your not-so-easy chair, there's nothing like a good Jack Ryan story, and I think this is the best of them. The plot involves one of the most obsessed bad guys you'll ever see, a fanatically militant member of an IRA splinter group whose attack on the British royal family is thwarted almost unconsciously by Ryan, who is visiting England as a tourist/lecturer. Now ex-CIA, Ryan's family is nearby, and family is central in this tale of the cold-blooded world of international espionage and terrorism. The family angle is one that keeps the story so chilling throughout, as the terrorist's brother is shot to death by Ryan as he ruins their try on the royals, and our star villain then sets out to stalk Ryan and his wife and daughter. The film moves at an almost perfect pace, and unveils to us some modern aspects of this shadowy world. For instance, even Ryan, played with understated perfection by Harrison Ford, is creeped out by his participation in a nighttime strike on a desert camp believed to be IRA training ground. In this scene he and several other jacket-and-tie types watch soldiers take out this nest of vipers a half-world away, thanks to infrared and satellite technology, all while detached voices calmly note "Target neutralized" and spies dressed like businessmen smile and nod while whispering to one another in thorough detachment from the blood and guts of the operation. All this technology and we are not removed from the days of the rich people perching on hills near the battles of Civil War days, sipping tea while viewing the entertainment. I cannot give less than five stars to a film that draws me in so completely as this one, making me feel the tension with such clarity and indeed making it so easy to actually hate the villain. Yet the film strikes sour notes with the drunken Richard Harris's half-hearted performance as an IRA bigwig, and with the cliched ending moment of an otherwise superb boat chase at the film's climax. Two distracting moments would mean a score of 9 on a scale of 1 to 10, or, in Amazon terms, 4-1/2 stars. These being minor, a full five stars is quite reasonable. Nearly a perfect action film; even the understated music score is just so right that it can't be imagined being done any other way.

Summary: THE GAME IS TO GET THE TRANSFER QUALITY RIGHT!
Review: "Patriot Games" has Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford)thrown back into the hopper, as a retired CIA agent, after he thwarts an assassination attempt on Royal family. The plot, cartoony at best, has heavily dated and its a real pity to see such stellar talent as James Earl Jones, James Fox and Samuel L. Jackson, wasted in cardboard cut out characterizations.
Transfer wise, we get a tired print master that is absent of the excess of shimmering, aliasing and edge enhancement that plagued the original DVD release of this movie. Though all of these characteristics are still present on this disc they are not quite as obvious.
Pixelization still is a problem, heavily presented in many of the exterior scenes, while colors are muddy, dull and undistinguished. Black levels and contrast levels are both weak. Fine detail is virtually non-existant in scenes taking place at night. The picture quality has an over all soft characteristic, riddled with film grain, scratches, chips and imperfections registered in the original camera negative. This is a dull and uninspiring presentation that Paramount ought to really be ashamed of, considering how much they had to live up to after their first disastrous transfer of this movie.
The audio is presented in both 5.1 and DTS but the tracks are virtually alike, save some minor bass enhancement in the DTS version. Voices are not presented with an ounce of natural ambiance, sounding, at times, duped (a common Hollywood practise that, done right, a listener should never notice). Here, unfortunately, you do!
EXTRAS: A comprehensive documentary on the making of the film and a theatrical trailer. Come on, Paramount. This isn't a special edition. It's your second try at a first run through and, compared to other special editions on the market, it simply does not hold up!
BOTTOM LINE: This DVD looks better than Paramount's first attempt. Almost anything would. But only marginally.
