Summary: Excellent movie, poor transfer to DVD
Review: I love the movie and it's in my top-ten list. The quality of the cast is unbelievable and it has an amazing sense of rythm. However, after using the VHS version quite a few times, I have to say that the DVD image quality (especially color) is worse than the tape. Muddy images, horrible flesh tones . I was not too excited about the audio either. Don't waste the money on the DVD, buy the VHS.

Review: As some people stated before: The movie is great, very thrilling, with excellent actors. But the DVD-version is REALLY disappointing. The worst one I have seen. Compared with the german version of the 5th Element, this DVD is junk!

Review: This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is also THE WORST QUALITY VHS CASSETTE I HAVE EVER SEEN. The picture is grainy with dust flecks everywhere, colors are weak, and the dialog is terribly muddy. I considered returning this VHS cassette and exchanging it for the DVD. After reading reviews of the DVD, I realized that these are not just VHS problems. Paramount cut corners mastering this film and it shows. Frankly, this movie looked better on HBO. I hate to encourage copyright infringement but Paramount deserves it for shelling out this garbage. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! Go get a good blank tape and record it off HBO. Your copy will probably look and sound better than the crap Paramount put on the shelves.

Summary: A great picture!
Review: Although it does not follow the Tom Clancy story to the letter, "Red Oktober" is a classic sub picture. Sean Connery is very believable as Marko Ramius, Alec Baldwin as "Jack Ryan" might be a stretch, buy hey, he's just one the chahracters in the movie. James Earl Jones, Scott Glen, turn in great performances as well. Definately worth renting or owning.

Summary: Super movie, junk DVD
Review: This movie is one of my all time favorites for kewl action and awesome sound for a theater system. Loved it on VHS. But the DVD is pure TRASH! It is the worst DVD I have bought yet and am returning it. Pictures are very fuzzy and unclear, even compared with movies of similar vintage. Paramount ripped us off by just slapping this thing on DVD with no focus on quality. DON'T BOTHER WITH DVD. Stick with the VHS version.

Review: The movie is about the UNited states navy and the Russian Navy. It takes place mostly on a russian submarine. The captian wanted to defect a.k.a give the new submarine to the americans. but runs into big problrms during his trip.

Summary: The best sub film ever!
Review: I can't think of a better sub movie than The Hunt for Red October. It has great under water affects and a great story line. While I did find ONE inaccuracy on the capabilites of a submarine, it was just one. This movie was far better than Crimson Tide, due to the fact that Red October was more about submarines. Crimson Tide was about nuclear war and would have had the same affect taking place in a 1950s missile silo.

Review: This is one of my favorite movies - I really enjoy Baldwin's and Connery's portrayals of their characters. While the sound of the DVD nicely met expectations, I found the video quality of the DVD version disappointing...color saturation was anemic in many places, downright poor in a few. The image shimmered on ocean textures and delivered speckled blacks. Love the movie, lump Paramount for a weak DVD remastering job.

Review: In this action thriller, based on the national best-seller by Tom Clancy, Sean Connery gives a riveting performance as a top Communist naval commander who steals one of Mother Russia's newest and deadliest nuclear submarines, heading for the U.S. But is he heading there to defect, or to launch his missiles? This film features a wonderfully complex leading performance by Connery that is a breath of fresh air in a genre that all too often mires itself in testosterone to the exclusion of everything else. Alec Baldwin also shows surprising depth as Jack Ryan, the role made famous in later Clancy-based films by Harrison Ford. While most likely appealing most to men, this film avoids many pitfalls that plague films of this genre, including predictability and a formula plot. Director John McTiernan cleverly paces the plot and the suspense, and thankfully avoids overwhelming the militarily-challenged in his audience with all the techno-speak that pervades this story. Wonderful supporting performances, especially by Sam Neill as Connery's second-in-command, struggling to keep the crew in line while wrestling at times with his own doubts about the captain's sanity. Great cinematography, script, and editing. While it might seem dated given the collapse of the Soviet Union, this thriller is well worth buying, especially if you're a Connery fan looking for something in his post-James Bond era.
