Summary: Eddie's How-To Book for Ghouls ...
Review: This drama slash horror slash black comedy delineates in reverent and meticulous detail the ghastly career of schizo Eddie Gein, the notorious Michigan grave robber, ghoul, and killer circa 1950. Steve Railsback is dazzling as the aged, repulsive Gein and is brilliantly supported by Snodgress, Champlin, Mansell and a host of players in minor roles who keep things simmering. Watch especially for: Eddie's bedside lamp constructed of a human spine and pelvis; Eddie entertaining a guest with beans served in bowls made from human skulls; Eddie's filthy, rat-infested kitchen; Mama Gein dropping-in on Eddie's bathtub jack-off session; and Eddie's neighbors chowing-down on his venison steaks while unaware the field dressed carcass of a village shop keeper hangs in his basement. This film will not disappoint the viewer; every scene offers a deliciously creepy twist to keep one slavering for more. Bon appetit!

Summary: WORTH A LOOK.
Review: MADE ON A LOW BUDGET AND UNEVEN, YET SOMEWHAT SATISFYING MOVIE BASED ON THE LIFE OF SERIAL KILLER EDWARD GEIN. WITH A PRESENT EERIENESS AND A DECENT PERFORMANCE FROM STEVE RAILSBACK (ED GEIN) THIS FILM ISN'T TO BE IGNORED. CARRIE SNODGRESS WHO ONE MIGHT THINK IS MISCAST BECAUSE AUGUSTA GEIN WAS VERY OVER WEIGHT IN REAL LIFE, PULLS OFF THE ROLE. EVEN STEALING A FEW SCENES. STILL IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE (OR EVEN FUN) TO SEE THE MOTHER IN "WHAT' S EATING GILBERT GRAPE" IN THE ROLE. WHILE I'M RELUCTANT TO COMPARE THIS TO HITCHCOCK'S CLASSIC "PSYCHO", IT IS VERY COMPARABLE TO GUS VAN SANT'S REMAKE (MADE N 1999). SO IF YOU ARE AMONGST THE MANY THAT WERE TURNED OFF BY THAT MOVIE, SKIP THIS ONE.

Summary: wasted portrayal
Review: I was staying up late one night and happend to catch this movie late on the T.V.

It starded off great, and looked like it was going to be really good. Then about 15 minutes(or somewere around that) the movie took a downward spiral toward being a cheap, and not as ambitious as it looked like it was going to be.

First of all the acting was bad, and a movie like this one proves how important good acting is to a very much talked about subject matter like this one.

2nd of all the movie is not that realistic. I realize the things that Ed Gein really did were far out, but this film just lacks an imortant realisitic aspect to it. For example. In one sceen Ed Gein shoots a female baretender, then while she is still alive, Ed drags her accross the floor and puts her into his truck, and takes her home. She kinda acts angery at Ed rather than fighting for her life.

Bottom Line: If your want to no more about the subject, look elase where. If you must see it. Rent it. Don't spend to much on it.

Summary: The Real Leatherface
Review: Generations have been creeped-out by Norman Bates, sickened by Buffalo Bill(silence of the lambs),and horrified by Leatherface. Now comes the true story that inspired these characters. The bizzare tale of Ed Gein-the plainsfield butcher. This little indie film starts slow and a little corny, but quickly sucks you in due to Steve Railsback's sublime performance of the title character. Railsback manages to make the character charmingly quaint yet horribly disturbed. Subtley acted and strangely engaging, this is a must-see for fans of true crime and horror. Low on gore but high on psycho-shock, Ed Gein is destined to become a cult classic.

Summary: A bad film of a great legend
Review: I'm a very big fan of true crime and have read a lot of the Ed Gein case (have all books). I was looking forward to see the one and only true film about this crazy Wisconsin recluse with a taste of dead old women, but was VERY dissapointed.
Why?

1.) The acting wasn't very good.

2.) Either was the script.

3.) The environment should have been a lot more snowy (so it at least resembled the classic picture of Gein being arrested in the cold november weather. The movie had none of this, except for Gein's trademark hunting cap).

4.) It felt very much like low budget.

5.) You didn't see much of Gein's hobbies (the few ones that you did se looked faky and stupid, like the shrunken heads on his bedroom door... BAD!)

6.) When Mary Hogan was shot, she still talked friendley to Gein, who was dragging her to his car... like I said, stupid script.

7.) The ending came JUST LIKE THAT, you didn't see it coming. Very underdeveloped.

8.) The fire CGI and Augusta Gein's laughing head in the bush... It was even worse than the Xenia show!

9.) In reality, Augusta was fat, in the film she looked just the way you imagine Norman Bates mother when she was not stuffed.

10.) And the nude nazigirl... WHAT?!

In other words, avoid this mess.
I hope some day a talented director, a cooler production designer, better actors, better screenwriter with more money than the idiots that made this lousy crap will make a fair film of this classic maniac we all love to hate!

One small ending note:
Shouldn't Ed Harris be very good as Ed Gein? I mean, just look at their faces... shudder.

Summary: Pretty Good
Review: It reminds me of a really twisted TV movie but that is probably because of the pan and scan version I rented from ... Blockbuster. The chain that loves not pleasing its customers. This film feels very personal in a way and is a great evening alone. If you really REALLY love Ed Gein give it an extra star. I liked it a lot, I did not love it.

Summary: scared skin
Review: This movie was enchantingly f'ed up. I sat entranced by the figure, rather, a shadow of a man confused beyond recognition. This unusual, yet retrospective look into the bizarre, macabre mind of a boy never grown up, held my interest in a spellbinding, yet erie way. The effects and acting were believable. The feeling of the character and movement of plot left me bolted to my seat. I watched this 5 times in two days and told many of my experience with this nightmarish enigma of a boy bound by matriarch in obsession and graduation of serialmania.

Summary: REAL HORRORSHOW
Review: This is not a very good movie. In fact, it seems as if the film makers have taken the most dull, predictable, and conservative route that this subject matter has ever seen. If you are a fan of the classics Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Psycho, don't even bother wasting your time on Ed Gein. With a few quick edits, this could play on network television. There is absolutely NO shock value or gore. The director spends an inordinate amount of time illustrating Gein's relationship with different town members. This is so boring and no one cares! The fact that the man had SEVERED HEADS hanging from his door and dressed in a body suit of DEAD SKIN are just briefly passed over; and I mean briefly. The reason why people wanted to see a movie about Gein is to know the intimate and sick details of what he actually did to his victims. As a film, Ed Gein is so conservative that the most disturbing part is watching his mother and father gut one of the pigs on the farm. Railsback is decent as Gein but attention to detail is overlooked, like having his mom be rail \-thin when in reality she was heavy. The scene were he kills his older brother is pretty ridiculous too, complete with computer generated fire. All in all, I am still waiting for someone to have the guts to show what actually happened inside of that farmhouse. Until that day, I will continue to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre and believe all the hype about Ed Gein.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: The best part of this film was the beginning and end, where you see actual newsreel footage, including interviews with people who knew Ed Gein, I wish there had been more of this. A documentary of Ed Gein would have been alot more interesting than this boring, inaccurate, low-budget film. (The best film about Ed Gein without a doubt is "Deranged". Skip this film and watch "Deranged" instead, you'll love it!)
