Summary: only one person believes Mick O'Brien can make it
Review: About the only redemptive part of this Rick Rosenthal directed lock up drama is the performance of Sean Penn as a 16 year old delinquent who appears to act out to get attention from his slatternly mother. Penn's performance is all the more remarkable considering it came after his goofy doper in Amy Heckerlings Fast Times at Ridgemont High. In the former, Penn's part was small but here he is the lead, and has a star presence, with his best moment being an emotional reaction to seeing someone he cares for having been beaten. The initial impression we have of Penn is negative after we see him break into a car, a moving one no less, and assault a man in the street. It's only when he is sent to a Chicago juvenile correctional facility that his leadership qualities emerge. The screenplay by Richard Dillello sets up the usual microcosm of prison as a hellhole, where the workers are morally bankrupt - we are told that smoking is an offence and then Rosenthal cuts to the inmates who all smoke - though I could have done without "time stands still". When Penn arrives, we see two older inmates appear to exist between the guards and the others, however after a confrontation, their authority dissipates questionably. There is also the suggestion that they control with the threat of gay abuse, since they wear tight clothes and their cell is decorated with muscle men pictures. Being a corrupt society, the betrayal of allegiances isn't surprising when someone from Penn's past enters the facility, culminating in an expression of gladiator style bloodlust, with Penn's human pain providing some level of reality. I also welcomed the presence of Eric Gurry as his cellmate, particularly his smile of satisfaction when the warden congratulates him on the skill of a bomb he has created. Penn works well off Gurry's Jewish wiseguy, a weasal who bites back when he is cornered. Otherwise, we get police magically appearing at the scene of crimes, a continuity error when blood is drawn before someone is struck, and a child loitering after he has been told to go home to set him up as a doomed victim.

Summary: John is right
Review: After reading John's review of Bad Boys, I did a little research. Indeed, the DVD version is 19 minutes shorter than the theatrical release. Thanks John, you saved me some money. Now to the rights holder out there, how about releasing a completed version.

Summary: Bad Boys, Bad Boys, what you gonna do!
Review: Alright, I know that is another movie, but seriously this movie rates as one of my childhood gangster like classics, growing up kids have a couple movies that stand out as being something you want to emulate when older, one being Scarface, two, living the life of the Godfather, and three to name a few would be Bad Boys! This is a classic, and I have no idea what that austrailan guy was watching, but he is not American so he can't be perfect right! Anyways, this movie is straight foward, gritty and rough to say the least, people that have never been to a Boys prision really don't know what goes on inside walls like these, but Bad Boys although some of it was far fetched, stayed true about how boys that grow up rough, might behave in a prision setting. The beatings with pop cans, and the exploding radio are classic scenes, and the acting was pretty good for all of these people being so young! This is a definite buy if you are in to somewhat realistic violent films, this may not be Oz, but this is the little baby OG cousin of the show!

Summary: There is some GREAT acting in this film
Review: And almost all of it was done by Sean Penn. I have to give this five stars for what it does. I agree with a lot of the other reviewers on the chopped up version. The beginning music and photos immediately involves you with the lives of these kids. It is one of the best intros into a movie that I can remember. We see these kids as the sweet innocent babies that they once were and not only as street hooligans. I would have liked to see more added into the family life (or no family) as they grew up but other than that I really enjoyed this movie. (maybe they cut out some of that which is a shame) I just can't bring myself to give it a bad review because rights owners don't care about it.

The "have a coke and a broken face scene" was one of my favorite all time scenes in a movie. There are a few other things in this movie that might deserve less stars but I think the good outweighs the bad.

Summary: THUG LIFE
Review: Before gansta films like Colors, boyz in the hood, and Menace to society there was this gritty street level classic. Sad and nihilistic, Penn may at film's end see the light. Early performances by many actors who went to noteriety and of course some brutal prison rumbles and slayings. On one level it works as a morality play, on another youth ultraviolence!

Summary: Outstanding movie!
Review: I'm not a huge Sean Penn fan,but his performance in this movie is great. If you are a fan of kick-ass fight scenes, this movie is definitely for you.The thing I love most about this movie is the way it is set up: all the things stack up to get you pumped for a huge fight at the end.The only downer of this movie is that it isn't really a movie you'd want to watch again because you know how the ending goes...but I would still suggest buying this movie.

Summary: very good show if you like prison movies

Summary: It seems realistic.
Review: If this is a true depiction of juvenile prison, then there is no future hope for juvenile offenders.

I could swear that I have seen two endings to this movie. In one, the Penn character kills the hispanic character; in the other, he stabs the ground and walks away. Are there two endings out there, or is it my imagination?
