Summary: Another Coen Brothers Triumph!
Review: Along with my agreement with the other laudatory reviews below, let me add two small points. When you watch this film, notice the huge rooms in which much of the action unfolds, with the actors placed on small islands of furniture isolated in the voids. Notice also the dissolves on window curtains as the wind blows the story from one room to the next. Gabriel Byrne and John Tuturro are two of the finest actors never to be nominated for an Oscar and they both deserved it for their work in this film. "Miller"s Crossing" requires and deserves multiple viewings to comprehend the full impact of this remarkable work. Buy and enjoy!

Review: For god sake, am I the only one that says that this movie is a Film noir? It's a fantastic film, Byrne and Turturro are cool as hell and Buscemi is like always the king on the screen when he makes his appearance.

Summary: Latent homosexuality delivered in gangster homage mastepiece
Review: This film appears to simply be a stylized homage to gangster films- and it holds up as an excellent film in that right alone (most noteably, the Coens tip their "hat" to The Glass Key). However, after several viewings it must be considered that the story is really about Tom's latent homosexual love for the political boss, Leo. Leo is the hat that is symbollically and brilliantly played with throughout the movie. If you like this movie and watch it again with this in mind you will see that the Coen brothers have pulled off one of the greatest coups in film history and arguably produced the greatest film ever made. Unquestionably this is their masterwork!-Chris Coffman

Summary: My "Best movie"
Review: There are few movies that I can watch more than once. This is one movie you MUST watch more than once. In addition to the enjoyment of the acting, the story is convoluted enough that you don't understand all of it the first time. And even after you understand all the relationships and motives of the characters, the movie is a joy to watch for the acting. Albert Finney, Jon Turturro, Jon Polito, Gabriel Byrne, and Marcia Gay Harden give outstanding performances. The movie is violent and this may but off some people. But if you can get past this, it's a terrific accomplishment. And if you like this one, see Sayles' Matewan.

Summary: The best Prohibition gangster film.
Review: "I'm talking about friendship....I'm talking about character....I'm talking about, ah hell, I ain't afraid to say it - I'm talking about 'ethics.'" And I'm talking about a Coen brothers film that can't be praised enough. In my experience, not enough people have heard of, or seen "Miller's Crossing," which has imbedded itself in my list of the Top Ten Movies of All Time irretrievably. Lots of humor, action, and surpisingly gripping drama to spare, this is a cinematic masterpiece far more outstanding than the overrated "Fargo." I liked "Fargo," but didn't find it overwhelmingly good. But this....this "Miller's Crossing" is what it's all about for Joel and Ethan Coen. See it and love it, everyone. And don't just say you'll think about it....

Summary: Perils of playing with Gangsters
Review: One of the best gangster movies ever made. Up there with the Godfather, Once Apon A Time in America, and the Cotton Club. Shows what it is like to pal around with the Big Boys. Fun until the BS stops. I know, I experienced a somewhat similar situation as Tom in the movie. Not something I ever want to do again!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: A stunning, gripping, MUST SEE MASTERPIECE
Review: +AH4-The Coen Brothers have done a whole string of superb movies, but this is their best. It's got everything you'd expect a quality film to have, but it isn't the sharp script, complex and involving plot, vivid characters, and terrific performances that really make this movie stunning: it's the intoxicating flavour of a twenties ganster ridden city, the incredibly strong sense of time and place that permeates all the Coen Brother's movies which is immensly strong here. It works on numerous levels,+AH4-+AH4- acting as a commentry and homage to all gangster cliches, and is never dull, not for a second. I heartily recommend this striking, original, fresh and exciting movie to anyone who has a taste for real cinema.+AH4-

Summary: The Coens' dark, quirky, exuberant take on gangster genre
Review: I'm not quite the rabid fan that some of my fellow reviewers are, but "Miller's Crossing" offers several pleasures that can be found in few other films. The language of the film, both verbally and visually, are fresh and dynamic without seeming forced (see if you don't end up asking people "What's the rumpus?" for a few days after you see it). Although there are some plotting devices that I never quite bought, there are others that offer a delightful, dark vantage point from which to view the gangland festivities.What makes the movie really click for me though are the performances. Albert Finney is the crown jewel in this setting, seeming to have an almost off-handed mastery of this role. It's a fine, subtle performance, making his character much more sympathetic than Gabriel Byrne's (whose performance I didn't much care for--isn't this guy Irish? If so, why does his Irish accent keep slipping?) Jon Polito is great fun as Finney's easily agitated underling-turned-rival and John Tutoro obviously relishes both the sliminess and vulnerabilty of his character. A couple of the film's set pieces are classic: the assassination attempt on Finney(to the accompaniment of "Danny Boy") builds incredible suspense before culminating in a memorably exciting machine gun battle--Hitchcock meets Leone? And both of Byrne's walks in the woods--one to shoot a traitor, the other to prove he's done the shooting--have a tension, dread, and intensity that had me riveted. It doesn't all hold together, but the parts are somehow greater than the whole, especially the exceptional performance by the under-rated and far too seldom seen Albert Finney.
