Summary: Why only 3 stars?
Review: This is one of my favorite movies, so why only 3 stars? Because I remember the theatrical widescreen release and the faded-color pan & scan video is butchery. The terrific set pieces such as the UN murder, the cropduster, the drunken cliff-driving, Mt. Rushmore, etc. lose much impact in the chopped aspect ratio. This film deserves the same fine restoration that Vertigo received.

Summary: Rear Window is the only Hitchcock which is better
Review: This was Hitchcock's second best movie. Only in Rear Window, which is a much different movie, did he do any better work. Interestingly, the spot in the visitor's center at Mt. Rushmore where Eva shoots Cary was never marked by anything. Now, with all the work at Mt. Rushmore, the spot is gone. This movie is Hitchcock at his most Hitchcock.

Summary: THE Film Other Thrillers Should Be Judged By!
Review: Supposedly, Cary Grant, aged 54, was contemplating retirement until Alfred Hitchcock asked a fourth role of him. Thank goodness he went for it! As good as Psycho is, it should never have eclipsed North By Northwest as Hitchcocks most famous film. This is his masterwork, (in my opinion one of the top three best films EVER), and for innumerable reasons the end result is just an astonishing accomplishment. Justifiably famous for those two scenes, (and the cropduster sequence is totally thrilling, though I always wondered why the pilot decided to go kamikaze and plough into the petrol tanker!), it has so much more to recommend it. Grant, present in virtually every scene, is superb, and the Academy should forever hang their heads in shame for ignoring this actor. He is matched, however, by Jessie Royce Landis,(funny already in as much that she was also 54 yet plays his mother!), who is utterly hilarious in her role. Everyone infact is good form, and its a pity that James Mason, in his only Hitchcock performance, is offscreen for an eternity after an impressive initial scene opposite Grant. Alfred Hitchcock simply couldnt have paced this film better, and what a wild ride it is, though if forced to pick a favourite moment it would probably be in the auction room. I can never forget the lady turning to call Grant a "genuine idiot" and him thanking her for it! This is simply scintilating entertainment of the very highest order, I defy any reasonably minded person to weary of it, because the second you see the M.G.M. lion in green, and hear Bernard Herrmans brilliant score, you know your in for one of the biggest treats of your life! Yes it really is THAT good, even after a dozen viewings. If you dont own this, you cant be a serious film fan. PERFECT!

Summary: A cold war thriller in the Hitchcock mode!
Review: Some of Hitchcock's best stuff came after he moved to the U.S.A. and began using American locales for his films! You can tell he really loved working here, and in "North by Northwest" he covered a LOT of ground! My personal favorite scenes include the classic cornfield fly-by and, of course, the Mount Rushmore finale! But this entire film is brilliantly put together with a wonderful cast! I never get tired of watching it again!

Summary: One of Hitchcock's Best
Review: Perhaps my only complaint about "North By Northwest" was that it seemed to drag in some parts of the film. Otherwise, I thought the film had wonderful actors, plenty of urbane humor, and a great musical score.

The film aso had so many memorable (and rather famous) scenes, such as the cropduster or the Mt. Rushmore scenes or the shots in the UN. I also liked how Hitchcock used one of Fellini's tricks as his ending of the film (his "naughty joke," as someone else called it).

The sophisticated humor and style, the suspense, the great acting, the scoring (musical, not Cary Grant's), and the creative camera shots make "North by Northwest" one of Hitchcock's best.

Summary: This is the greatest movie I've ever seen
Review: I would definetely recommend this video for all Alfred Hitchcock fans. It is very exciting. I like it how Hitchcock makes an appearance in all his movies (in this one he missed his bus at the beginning). But the whole plot of a businessman getting drugged because he is mistaken for someone else is great. It has a lot of twists in it. Hope you see this great movie!!!
