Rating: Summary: Classic Coming of Age Film Review: I can't say enough wonderful things about Stand By Me. It's superbly acted by everyone and has so much more meaning than just another "kids" flick. The Goonies this is not, it says so much in such a short time. It's FUNNY as hell sometimes and deeply moving other times. Wil Wheaton is great as Gordy, the sad doy eyed kid with a father who is about as sensitive as a brick wall and an imagination that could sell about as many stories as Stephen King. River Phoenix was stupendous as always, showing warmth and charm and such great talent. Corey was funny and disturbing, classic Feldman acting. Jerry O'Connell was priceless as the lovable Vern-o! "I brought the comb!" Plus we get the devishly wonderful Keifer Sutherland as the bully from hell. How could someone so hot be such an a-hole in every 80s movie?! But I love that guy, he adds the flavor to this movie. As an even added bonus we get two scenes with the always favorite John Cusask, as Gordy's deceased brother Denny. This movie has it all and I never tire of watching it. The DVD was quite awesome! I was pleasantly surprised with the wonderful features, including the really cool behind the scenes featurette, featuring of course the entire cast looking so much older. Listening to their stories was about as entertaning as the film. Great job on the dvd, we even get the Stand By Me video! :)
Rating: Summary: Skin It Review: STAND BY ME- a golden movie. It is the story told in flashback by an adult form of one of the main characters, and set in the late 50's. Four boys, Chris Chambers (played by the magnificently talented River Phoenix) Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton) Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) and Vern tessio (Jerry O'Connel) decide to sneak off from their sleepy Oregon town to find the body of a missing boy their own age. Along the way they get through leeches, an evil tempered junkyard man and his dog, and numerous way-too-close train encounters. The film is full of all those little details, like old song tunes and show jingles, that make a movie classic.
All four boys are varying misfits, so there's the dynamic of their personal struggles as well as that of four 13 yr old boys hiking through the wilderness of Oregon. With a wonderful core cast, and a supporting cast of Kiefer Sutherland, John Cusack, and Bradley Gregg.
I remeber my brother and all his friends watching this movie when they were little, and me, even smaller, just watching quietly from a corner. The movie always stuck in my mind. I love STAND BY ME; so skin it. Deffinately check this movie out.
Rating: Summary: Avoid Puberty at all Costs!!!!!! Review: This movie is good, not as good as The Goonies but good none the less. You have to feel sorry for Cory Feldman though, once the balls dropped it was all over.
Rating: Summary: The best friendly film Review: When I was 12 ( I'm 21), I fell in love for a movie called Now and then, starring Christina Ricci, Rosie O'Donnell, Demi Moore and more...It was a coming-of-age movie. So, on the box of the VHS, it was written : The best coming-of-age since Stand by me. It made me curious about this flick, but I didn't any chances to watch it, until last May. I was working (in a Video Store), when I saw the vhs box of the movie...And when I watched it, I immediately felt in love with this beautiful movie. I really think it's the better coming-of-age movie that I've seen in my life. I just bought the DVD and woaw, again, it's a great movie. The performances of the 4 boys are remarquabe, especially Wil Wheaton and River Phoenix. I will watch this movie again and again and again. You can't be tired of Stand by me. And I don't know what to say about the end of this movie. It makes me cry each times that I see it. The story is wonderful. When I'm listening this movie, I forget all my problems. It's a film you can't miss. It's a masterpiece !
Rating: Summary: stand by me Review: What a movie!! I was home on leave from the Army and rented this from a Blockbuster store and fell in love with it This is a great one and another classic book to film adaptation from the work of Stephen King Great job by Rob "Meathead" Reiner on his direction of this movie The adventure that every kid dreams of is featured in this film when four teenage boys follow the railroad tracks to find a dead body of a boy hit by a train The interaction and genuine friendship between the boys is obvious on screen and the young actors are very charismatic and talented especially the late River Phoenix who died tragically in the early '90s at a nightclub in L.A of a drug overdose What a huge success he would have been if he lived One thing that I do fing kind of curious on this movie is the homosexual undertones that exist between Phoenix's character and Will Wheaton's character If you look closely you can tell it is there That is the only downside of the movie Otherwise nothing short of a classic
Rating: Summary: STILL WAITING FOR THE BREATHING METHOD... Review: Stand By Me was the first of three great movies made from Stephen King's collection of four novellas--Different Seasons. My favorite movie of all time, The Shawshank Redemption, was made from the story Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. It is the only movie ever made from a piece of King's fiction that transcends and is greater than the written original.
Stand By Me was the first of the three movies to be made (the other being Apt Pupil). It is a great coming of age movie in its own right. Featuring a first-class cast of child actors (oh, the wasted potential now seen in their later years breaks the heart!), this movie may not transcend the story, but it certainly delivers the goods in a way that few movies made from King's works have done (The Green Mile springs to mind, but after it, Apt Pupil, and Shawshank, the drop-off is considerable).
C.S. Lewis often spoke of Sensucht: the painful longing that itself is a joy. This movie, with its warts and all retelling a journey in the golden-hued past, powerfully evokes a feeling of sensucht. This feeling is eerily matched and accentuated while watching a young River Phoenix turn in one of his most powerful performances.
I can't help but wonder if the fourth story of Different Seasons--The Breathing Method--will ever be made into a film. Its ending may ward off the faint of heart, but anyone who has ever heard the audio recording by Frank Muller could easily see its possibilities as a movie.
I give Stand By Me my heartfelt recommendation.
Rating: Summary: baseball Review: this is a very good dvd to watch but it is even better when you read the story on it because the thing you see in the dvd mit not come up in the book so that is why you should plan to take the timeout and do this.
Rating: Summary: a movie well done Review: its an awesome movie to watch especially if you're a kidbut it also can be for older people. i like how it revolves around friendship and the virtues of growing up. i also reccomend reading the book, its a good read.
Rating: Summary: Good classic story Review: A wonderful, classic coming of age adventure-drama that will never get old, Stand By Me is truly a classic story of friendship that is unusual in being centered around pre-teen characters who are as enjoyable and engaging as any adults. Not to be missed. Yet another 80's classic where the young show the adults how it's done.
Rating: Summary: excellent movie~~~~ Review: This movie is very interesting for me. Because four young boys showed their friendship and morality with undergoing all sorts of hardship. Second reason, everyone's character is funny especially Teddy like a psycho. And each character made harmony altogether in this story. First of all, each boy's character is good, nice, and innocent. They were very young but they kept friendship and morality. Besides they helped each other for their friends. I want to emphasize that is better point than normal adult.
