Summary: Muddled film
Review: The British thriller, "The Criminal" won an award for "Best Director" at one film festival, and it was nominated for the title of "Best New Director" at the London Film festival. Everything I read about this film was positive and glowing. I was expecting something as clever as "Croupier" or "Prime Suspect," but what I got was extremely disappointing. "The Criminal" is the story of a musician, J (or Jasper), who meets a woman in a bar. She really wants to cut through the small talk and practically rushes J back to his flat. At this point, the film is interesting, and definitely had a tinge of film noir. From the small talk between J and the mystery woman, his pick-up lines really didn't seem successful, so I was interested when she agreed to go back to J's flat. The evening doesn't go as planned, however, and J ends up with a dead woman on his bed. Naturally, the police consider J to be the prime suspect.

The film was very muddled and confused. I think all the confusing and illogical bits were supposed to add to the suspense and mystery of it all. I had a difficult time following the plot; it was rife with problems, and I found myself telling the television set off. To give you an example of how silly the plot is, after leaving the police station, J just HAPPENS to walk by an adult theatre, and a man, who is WAITING at the door hustles J inside where he is questioned rather nastily about his knowledge of the dead woman. London is a big place. It's ridiculous to have this amazing coincidence. How did the thug know that J would JUST HAPPEN to walk by? This was silly. It didn't make any sense, and once a film doesn't make sense to me, that's it really. The portrayal of the two police detectives investigating the case was also over-the-top. If you are like me, you will watch this film anyway--just so that you can find out for yourself, and you may even like it. However, after buying this pathetic excuse for entertainment, I feel bound to ward off the unsuspecting. If you must see it--try renting it first--displacedhuman
