Summary: THERE'S A KIND OF HUSH
Review: There must be some unwritten law in Hollywood that former Actress Oscar winners or nominees at one point in their career have to make this kind of over the top thriller movie. Just look back at Tallulah Bankhead (Die Die My Darling), Joan Crawford (Strait-Jacket, Berserk, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane), Bette Davis (Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, Baby Jane), Olivia deHavilland (Lady in a Cage, Charlotte), Talia Shire (The Landlady, Kim Novak (Tales That Witness Madness); the list goes on and on. So now we have Best Actress Winners Jessica Lange and Gwyneth Paltrow in this sordid, uneven, but ultimately entertaining potboiler. This time it's Lange who chews up the scenery as the doting mother of handsome Johnathon Schaech (Judas, That Thing You Do, The Forsaken). Schaech has brought home for Christmas his live in love, played rather ineffectively by a listless Gwyneth Paltrow. Of course, Mommy seems to have more than a motherly love for dear Johnathon, so she sets out to make sure she gets control of their lives. Lange does a credible job in this overly written, underly developed role, but it is the late Nina Foch as Schaech's paternal grandmother who steals the acting honors. At times feisty and crude, she maintains an air of compassion and love that rises above Lange's self-centeredness. Too bad she's not in the movie a little more. As noted, Christopher Young's score is wonderful and the Virginia countryside is gorgeous. Not quite as hammy as Die Die My Darling, but similarly a Grand Guignol of a tale.

Summary: c'mon its not that bad a movie!
Review: This is one of those campy movies thats so bad its good. the reason i watched it is becasue jessica lange is one of my favorite actresses. she plays an overbearing mother who tries to kill her sons wife played by the revolting gywneth paltrow. Jessica Lange played the part so right it was downright campy. when i saw the movie in the theater and it showed jessica lange's shadow with the needle people were laughing. thats just the type of movie it is. and like another reviewer, i noticed differences in the trailer and this version which leads me to believe they changed the ending. the preview showed jessica lange slapping gywneth which didnt happen.
in fact gywneth paltrows character was so pathetic i was rooting for jessica lange the whole time.. sorry. i just wanted jessica to haul off and smack gywneth to shut her up. and the whole end scene was just crazy. you can tell they changed the ending. iwould like to see the original ending! nina foch also played it good as the grandmother of jessica's son. all in all a fun campy movie but i would like to see the directors cut also!

Summary: IT AIN'T TOOTSIE AND IT AIN'T BLUE SKY
Review: This is the eery story of Helen(Gwyneth Paltrow) who becomes the center of her new mother in law(Jessica Lange best actress 1994)'s emotinal pawns. As Helen fights to win her new husband back the mother throws a "real" temper tantrum. Great idea with Helen's diaphram and it does make you jump. But it still has some kingcks to work out.

Summary: A Must Have!
Review: This movie has a great story line to it. When I watched it I was glued to the TV. If you like surprises, trust me you'll like this. Whenever there's something scary on the screen I either hide under a blanket or run out of the room, same if I think somethings about to happen. Anyways, I hid a whole lot during this movie, and yet was just so great to watch, and I loved it.

Summary: A Wannabe that Never Makes It There
Review: This movie is a wannabe. It wants to be a shocking, spine-tingling thriller...instead it stops at just plain shocking -- how could Gwynnie and Jessie make such a horrid movie together!!??

The plot could've been well-done, but it goes in a completely unbelievable direction before the first act ends. The beginning is o.k., the middle flounders terribly and the end is just sheer torture. What were these people thinking?

After seeing it on HBO, I was so glad I never spent money to see it. I *almost* rented in on Pay-Per-View and before that I *really almost* saw it in the theater. I'm so glad I saved that seven bucks!!

And it's a shame because the trailers for this film made it look *so* good. If you're in the mood for a thriller with a crazy old bat trying to rub out somebody who lives with 'er, see "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"! Don't bother with this one!

Summary: Awful
Review: This movie is really bad. It's predictable and stupid. The only thing worth seeing is an ever so brief and blurry nude shot of Gwyneth. Avoid at all costs, unless of course, you desire to see a brief and blurry nude shot of Gwyneth.

Summary: Creepy!
Review: This movie is really good. Jessica Lange is TOTALLY creepy. But there are a few rather (really) gross parts. But it shouldn't be a problem for most people. This is a movie that really got my heart beating, waiting for what would happen next.

Summary: Let Down
Review: this movie was critically bashed, and thought i wouldn't like. i was suprised to fine it kind of entertaining until the ending which totally ruined any suspense that was building up. the ending is really bad, and dissapointing to what COULD have a pretty good thriller. the only thing that makes it really watchable was probably Lange and Paltrow. and the guy who played the husband of Gwyneth was totally unbelievable as a farm boy. he wasn't the type. and plus he was a bad actor. rent before you buy
