Summary: Southern Maternal Love Gone Plumb Mad!
Review: "Hush" serves up a down-home southern "charm" that would put Oedipus himself to shame.

Only child, Jackson Baring, played by Johnathan Schaech is the quintessential and clueless man-child mama's boy. His love interest and the first girlfriend he has ever brought home to meet his mama (no wonder!), Helen, played quite off-kilter by Gwyneth Paltrow.

They journey to the Baring's Thoroughbred Horse Farm, Kilronan for Christmas to meet "mama". Jessica Lange, is mama Martha Baring. Lange superbly but quite over the top plays Jackson's demanding, clinging, cross between Queen Jocasta & Blanche Du Bois on crack mama. Martha fawns, flirts, grabs, and kisses on her only baby boy in quite a non-maternal way through most of the film. Martha is obsessed and quite in love with her own son and has done some "doozies" to keep him where she wants him.

Hal Halbrook has a nice couple of scenes as obstetrician, Dr. Franklin Hill and ol' dame, Nina Foch (Spartacus, The Ten Commandments, Scaramouche) turns in a terrific performance as Great Aunt Alice Baring that has been on to Martha for years and knows exactly what she is capable of.

Torture, drugging, murder, lust & incestuous thoughts and deeds ensue! A great thriller with decent performances and a strong storyline all the way around.

Happy Watching and Be Careful Of Those Momster-In-Laws!

Summary: Gwyneth Rules!
Review: "Hush" was SOOOOOOO good! Jessica Lange is the mother-in-law that everyone dreads... seriously. And Gwyneth was absolutely FABULOUS! She's so talented... and she makes this movie so believable! Really creepy.

Summary: I still think it's fun...
Review: A lot's been said about how bad this film is; I like it for its flaws. It reminds me a bit of those old 50's films about good people in bad situations. Paltrow and Schaech are beautiful as the young loving couple, and Lange, one of my favorites, seems to be researching her role in "Titus", as Tamora, Queen of the Goths. There are two things about this film that make it remarkable to me. The music of Christopher Young is consistantly eerie and complimentary to the action. And, mostly, the wonderful performance of Nina Foch (remember her as Moses' mother), as the only one who knows what's going on. She's worth your time, even if the rest of the film is trivial. Not really that bad, if you like a decent suspense story.

Summary: Predictable
Review: A predictable narrative and soap-opera-quality encouneters dominate this drama of familial jealousy and intrigue. The one feature that might have rescued it would have been the performances of the stars (the innocent-looking Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Lange) but this isn't so, and Lange overacts as the scheming matriarch.

Summary: Hush: Two Women Acting In A Void
Review: Dullsville. "Hush" sadly demonstrates that you can bring two talented and resourceful actresses down to the level of a mediocre script if the directing is lackluster enough. Jessica Lange, realizing that she doesn't have a character but a caricture, flails about and continually drinks whisky just to get through this job (her kids' college tuitions must be coming up) while Paltrow looks petulant, bored, and is just unappealing. The script - about a jealous horse-breeder who intends to kill her daughter-in-law after she gives birth to a grandchild - is clearly a hack job: you'd have to be stupid not to see Lange's character as a one-dimensional tyrannical witch after her first scene. Let's just say, the director doesn't exactly expend much effort (or much talent, if he has any) to transform this material. There's no pacing, suspense, humor, or narrative drive here - just one dull rote scene after another. One of the worst movies of 1998.

Summary: GREAT PAYBACK FOR THOSE OF US WITH JEALOUS MOTHER-IN-LAWS!

Summary: Can I give negative stars?
Review: How far down does the rating system go? This is the stupidest movie, with the worse actress alive (Paltrow) and the worse actor (Schaech), so it does have that going for it. Rent anything else!

Summary: What Happened?
Review: HUSH is a diaster! What happened that made this film so terrible? Gwyneth Paltrow is my favorite actress and she has public said that she has NEVER seen the finished product because she is so embarrassed by it. She, herself, knows it is a terrible film. Originally entitled 'Kilronan,' this film must of needed some revisions because in the film some scenes has Gwyneth wearing a wig. Most likely, after filming Sliding Doors, where Gwyneth chops off her hair, she was called back to reshoot many of the scenes. The film kept my attention, but yet some scenes did not run smoothly and some parts of the film were plain ridiculous! Only reason the film is getting 3 stars is because I enjoyed Gwyneth!

Summary: Nonsense
Review: Hush is an utterly dismal film. There are a few glaring errors which would distract from the tedium of the plot were it not so ridiculous in the first place. I mean, we are supposed to believe that Gwyneth Paltrow is impregnated after her future mother-in-law tampers with her diaphragm during a New Year party. A few mind-softening minutes later, we are exposed to wedding of Gwyneth and her dullard husband, which is taking place in the height of a baking summer. The thought that the waif-like Paltrow is supposed to be at least 5-6 months pregnant by this point simply beggars belief. The remainder of the film moves along in a very pedestrian fashion, not bothering to tie up any of the plot strands which have been opened in earlier scenes, resulting in a very jumbled final cut. Even allowing that one is taken in by the Jonathan Schaech character suddenly 'remembering' that his mother had murdered his father; that one doesn't question why the said Schaech fool is not aware of his grandmothers presence in a local nursing home; that the 'evil' and murderous Jessica Lange (as evinced by the fact that she smokes - come on..) would simply break down when confronted, one is still left wondering if the end product has been released as intended, and if there is not some heavy irony at play. I am not convinced though, and would have laughed had I not cared in the slightest.

By the way, those who have seen the trailer beforehand may be left wondering what has happened to a few dramatic looking scenes which are not to be found in the main body of the film. I can only suppose that these were cut, lest the film contain even a modicum of excitement. Alas, those in search of a absorbing and rewarding 90 minutes would be better advised to simply to go to bed and pull the covers over their head.
