Rating: Summary: Finally, a good horror movie. Review: It seems like every horror movie nowadays is all about blood and gore... finally Mothman Prophecies shows us a good horror movie with not much blood, and you only see the blood for a split second. It's plot about Richard Gere is fiction, yet the events in Point Pleasent, West Virginia actually happened, and the climax of the film actually happened. Then they resolve the movie with words on the screen saying what happened after the movie. It's a good movie for about 10 year-olds and up, because there is only one or two scary parts. But I would reconsider taking someone that scares very very easily because these events in Point Pleasent, West Virginia ACTUALLY HAPPENED.
Rating: Summary: (SPOILERS) well made film- great spooky atmosphere- but... Review: don't get suckered in by the "true story" thing. Before you run off telling your friends the plot and telling them "its all true".. you should know a few things. First off: John Klein, richard gere's character was not a real person. he was inserted into the story for what i imagine to be dramatic purposes.. Secondly: There were no "prophecies". apparently, the author of the book was given some information which was supposedly prophetic, but none of it ever actually came true.Third: By the time the steel bridge collapsed in real life, all sightings of the mothman were long passed. in fact, the bridge fell almost two years after the supposed mothman events. There are also some other interesting "true events" from the actual legend that didn't make it into the film.. things like UFOs and Men In Black. These things might have made the film a bit too crowded for what they were trying to do. But, if you're a fan of X-Files type stories.. you'll probably like this movie.. the atmosphere of it is incredibly creepy, the direction is tight, and the acting is right on target.. but, again, i suggest you look on the internet for information about the actual legend and events that this story was based on before deciding to believe it or not.
Rating: Summary: Spacey, Surreal, Lets you think for yourself Review: If you enjoy X-files and the paranormal, you'll love this! The film was fabulous for conveying mood, mysteriousness, suspense, tension and freakishness, very spacey, plus no giveaways on what's coming. Loved the gritty, industrial sound affects, very tension building, bass drone noises, freakish. No pop-music doing your narration for you. Richard Gere plays Keel, news journalist, who's wife sees a horrifying winged humanoid before crashing her car. She wakes up screaming, with a brain tumor that looks like ...(well, take a good look at it). Two years pass. He winds up in a town he doesn't remember setting off for, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, nor could've possibly have reached during his drive time. More reality distortion ensues, not only for him, but also the whole town. Is he having a delayed nervous breakdown due to repressed grief? Is the local chemical plant leaking into the water, creating mental disturbances? Is this the latest government experiment in Hallucinogens and group psychology? Normal, righteous folk are calling the Sheriff (Laura Linney): saying they've seen the same scary, winged creature (Mothman); unhealing eye hemorrhages after seeing Mothman; strange phone calls; waking dreams; looping time where the same event happens over-&-over; time stopping; meetings with un-normal humanoids who claim to warn of future catastrophes--yet there's not enough info to know what exactly is going to happen. Are they angels/devils/beings from another dimension? Would a normal human be capable of perceiving or having straightforward communication with one? Keel (Gere) gets so many strange phone calls he tapes them and has them analyzed.... More reality distortion, people who are dead appear and talk to some of the towns folk, Keel gets a call from one. All this strange activity seems to parallel odd animal behavior before an earthquake---so of course something's building up! Are the humans and (whatever else is at-work) here, detecting or communicating, even subconsciously, some pending event? An bitter wiseman tells Keel of his illusive searches for meaning ending up not helping anybody, and sucking the true meaning out of his own life. Click your shoes, Dorothy! Has Keel been lured into this escalating madness to be killed? Is his psyche forcing catharsis, avoidance of his grief or a passive suicide by dragging him into this weirdness? If you love this, you'll love Solaris and Stalker, Russian sci-fi paranormal movies by Andrei Tarkovsky, very spacey and surreal.
Rating: Summary: Best Richard Gere Movie in YEARS! Review: A great movie from start to finish. I don't get the comparisons to X-files though. A lot of the reviews here say things like "this really needs Mulder and Scully" etc. I am not a fan of the X-files. I think it is a boring Twilight Zone rip-off with a completely untalented cast (with the obvious exception of Robert Patrick who played the Terminator and starred in Fire in the Sky.) So don't compare that cheesy TV show to this terrific film...please! Richard Gere was the perfect choice for this role. Rather than telling you the story (like so many others do on here, one review after another...why?!) let me add that the reason this film works is it avoids the typical Hollywood cookie-cutter formula. Some complain that there are too many unanswered questions...duh! It's based on (supposedly) a true story. It's a mystery and it was never quite solved. Then there are those who say "the book was better". The book is always better folks. Because nothing can top your own imagination. But unlike recent failed attempts in this style (like Unbreakable!) The Mothman Prophecies is a must-see. If you don't jump out of your seat or get the creeps at least once, you better check your pulse and make sure your alive.
Rating: Summary: The Mothman Lives!!! Review: This is was a great movie! It definitely will be put under the "thriller" genre, but it was really a pschyological thriller. It's one of those movies that isn't sacry if you tell someone about it, you have to go expierence it for yourself. Richard Gere in his best performance yet and adding a great storyline, and you've got yourself a highly successful movie. But, parents, if you're considering taking your kids to this movie (13 or younger), don't, because I'm 14 and it took be 3 hours to go to sleep.
Rating: Summary: Will have you thinking long after you've watched it Review: The Mothman Prophecies is one of the creepiest movies I've seen in a long time. It's based on the true accounts of journalist John Keel who documented many of the strange happenings that plagued Point Pleasant, West Virgina leading up to the Silver Bridge disaster of 1967. The most captivating of these events is numerous sightings by many credible witnesses of a man-like creature that has come to be known as "The Mothman". I haven't had the chance to read John Keel's book of the same title, so I'm not sure how true to the book the movie is, but I can say that this film will take you on a journey through a very strange time in Point Pleasant. The fact that it is based on true events adds a whole new level of creepiness to the movie. What do you do when a 8-foot tall winged creature with red eyes comes to visit you with prophetic warnings? Or when your dreams tell of some coming tragedy? Or when you receive strange phone calls, hear strange voices or see things that shouldn't be there? The Mothman Prophecies will make you sleep a little less easy tonight and perhaps think twice about answering the phone. It'll definitely leave you thinking about it long after you've watched it.
Rating: Summary: Richard Gere's Best Performance Since Red Corner? Review: The Mothman Prophecies may well be the most unusual and interesting film to come out of Hollywood in 4 or 5 years. They've done a superb job with all of the elements we've come to expect from a big budget picture, and yet managed to avoid many of the commonplace failings of American cinema. The casting is very nearly perfect. Richard Gere is a Washington Post reporter who suddenly finds himself thrown into the deep end of the Twilight Zone. He takes the uprooting of his deepest convictions just as you might expect; his anger, fear and obssessive need to make sense out of chaos is entirely believable . . . which is a good thing, since the entire story hinges upon it. This is exactly the sort of role at which Gere excels and he makes the most of it. Laura Linney is also terrific as a small town cop every bit as intelligent and far better grounded. She's a good match for Gere and more than holds her own. Make no mistake: this *is* a Hollywood movie. The story plays fast and loose with the facts and legends of the Point Pleasant incident. The film leads you by the nose to that one interpretation the director wants; you're left with no choice but to accept the paranormal "explanation" for the Mothman phenomenon. On the other hand, this is *not* a typical Hollywood horror flick. If you're looking for blood, guts and gore, don't bother with this one. All in all, I truly enjoyed this movie. Its frightening without being disgusting, sweet without being cloying. Go see it and have fun!
Rating: Summary: An Urban Legend!?! Review: This is a movie based on things that supposedly happened in real life. In 1964 a dark phantom appeared and haunted the small and dreary little town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The Mothman is a bird-like creature that drives some people nearly insane and others to their death. The movie starts out well and one is quite hopeful given the interesting plot and the starring actor. But it never really picks up the pace and the story begins to drag and never fully develops. It was a movie theme with a lot of potential but overall I felt this movie was a disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Oh So Boring Review: The Mothman Prophecies begins with so much potential, but never really develops into a story worthwhile telling. It is soooo repetitive. The actors do as well as they can with a really flat script. Definately missable.
Rating: Summary: it's about time one1 did a movie like this Review: i work in a movie theater and just saw this movie 2day be4 work and it creeped the hell out of me. so 2 me that's the type of movie they should make more often. the characters were great and the whole mood of the movie was good cuz u didn't know what was gonna happen next. the only thing that i was alittle upset at was the they never showed the mothman. only in pictures that people drew (they were some really cool drawings) and some quick glimpse of the mothman. i recommend this movie 2 any1 who likes thrillers or just plain likes horror movies. oh and u know when this movie comes out on dvd i'm getting it the 1st day.
