Rating: Summary: All-out creepfest with a garbled plot Review: I watched most of the movie through my fingers. The plot made no sense but the film overcame that with lots of suspense. Most terrifying ending since 'Don't Look Now'
Rating: Summary: I'd like to Ring the director's neck... Review: The Ring had all the promises to be "the next Exorcist", but like any movie these days, it didn't live up to its billing. In no way can you compare The Ring to any great horror movie. It falls more into the class of "well, if they did this and this, and maybe that, it would have been a lot better" kind of movies. With a fairly unknown cast and original premise, the movie had all the appeal the Blair Witch Project had. Except it didn't scare you psychologically. Almost, but not quite. I must admit however that the lighting and camera angles were quite extreme, which made it a heck of a lot scarier than it actually should have been. Anytime you see "horror" caught on an everyday video camera, and in a grainy black and white tint, then it makes it pretty scary. Look at Signs and The Blair Witch Project if you don't know what I mean. Both used the everyday camera to heighten the fact that this could happen to you. It brings the movie down to the audience's level. The Ring just failed to hold my interest. There were little, if no explanations as to why the child was killing people. Just because she was insane is a pretty lame reason. Either I missed it, or Gore Verbinksi forget to tell me. 3 Stars
Rating: Summary: Not for the weak at heart! Review: The Trailor for this Movie Does it NO Justice! I was Very Impressed with Naomi Watts performance, this being the first time I've seen her in a leading role, she carries the intire thing exceptionally well. I also have high reveiws for the supporting actors, not sure of their names, but the casting is very good. This movie hit home for me b\c of personal experiences with Horses. I won't ruin the plot, but if you're an animal lover like I am, prepare yourself for A little GodFather influence. If you enjoy in depth story line, and VERY Scarry senerios, I am confident you will be as satisfied as I was. My only problem was, I missed the first 15 minutes, so some of the story leaves me wondering "what the hell happened here?" Bottom line - Excellent acting, wonderful cinematography, great story line, and kick butt special effects! P.S. I would NOT let my 13 year-old child watch this! (should've been rated R)
Rating: Summary: Excorsist meets Sixth Sense with more detail Review: I'm not much on your typical "Scarry Movie" (for instance Halloween or Friday the 13th) So when I see something a little more realistic and beleivable, it really catches my eye. Naomi Watts impressed me, and she carries the whole thing exceptional well! I walked in the thaetre with the pre-idea that Sixth Sense would be about the same caliber- Not true, except for the fact that there is a prodigal child in the story. Sixth Sense was a walk in the Park in comparison. If you like in-depth detail, and the snot creeped out of you prepare to be a happy camper. My only problem was, the story left a little too much to the imagination. Bottom line - Excellent Acting, Special effects top notch, The best Story line in a Thriller I've ever seen, period.
Rating: Summary: tense and disturbing Review: I am not normally a fan of horror movies, but I liked this one for a few reasons. First of all it is not a slasher movie and to me that makes it fresh and more frightening. Secondly, it has an interesting premise and an air of mystery that kept me engaged throughout the movie. Third, there is something about evil children that really gives me the creeps and the little girl in this movie is no exception. Fourth, the acting was subtle and competent and definitely not over the top as it often is in horror films. Finally, the cinematography was very good in creating a dark, dank, creepy, and tense environment. You could almost smell the decay and feel the dampness in the theater. The director limits scenes of gore and monsters to brief flashes and glimpses that greatly adds to the suspense and fear. My only complaints are that there seem to be some timeline inconsistencies in the events surrounding the evil girl and the opening and ending have a bit of a "campy", chain-mail feel that appears to cater to the teenage crowd. Its not quite as clever as the Sixth Sense, but it is worth seeing.
Rating: Summary: Just See This Movie Review: This is one that is well worth your time even if the genre might be somewhat off-putting. The movie is astounding. If you want to find out what it is really like to be scared give this one a shot. It reaches from beyond the screen within the first ten minutes and does not let go until you have left the theater. The plot is carefully outlined by several reviews below, but this is a mere reccomendation for anyone even remotely interested in this. If you like a wild ride that shakes your brain and pushes your nerves to their limits, I cannot imagine a rival to the ring. Go, get up from your computer, get in your car, drive to the theater and buy a ticket. You will never hear static the same way again, and when the phone rings you will jump.
Rating: Summary: The Ring pulls few punches Review: This isn't your normal little the killer is behind you with an axe movie. It is more along the lines of building up suspense as you go on a dire journey of discovery with the main character. Though, the movie does break down from actually scaring you and rather goes for the quick heart pumper by bringing the sound down and then blasting your ears with a sudden loud noise to make you jump. The movie is done very well. I'd give Gore kudos on pulling it off. It's definitely a way out there flick that requires some imagination. In other words, I'm recommending you folks to go see it. It's a good unraveling the mystery and putting the puzzle together movie. Sad thing is, some of the pieces aren't there. I don't know if they're planning on doing a sequel like the original Japanese film did or what, but there was a lotta stuff missin'. The orgin of the tape isn't fully explained. Seems as though someone was doing a little cut'n'paste with the script. A few of the attempted scares in it were somewhat cliche and predictable. But there was some good building up some of the plot points. There are some good, quick flashes in some points to act as little reminders for you during the film as to let you keep up and try and figure out the mystery along with the characters. The way the clues unravel throughout the film was very well paced. You get to decipher the clues along with the characters as they notice things. I'm still trying to figure out many of the things that were left for dead in the film. I wasn't too happy with the whole bit of the kid comunicating with the little girl. It's just been done wayyyyy too much. This film does nothing to seperate it's "I talk with dead people" kid from any other film's "I talk with dead people" kid.
Rating: Summary: Visually stunning! Review: I had no idea what to expect when I saw "The Ring", but that was a good thing. I got to see a visually stunning, well acted, well written film that kept me on the edge of my seat. I won't bother writing a more in-depth review, but I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it!
Rating: Summary: Before you die, you [must] see this movie... Review: I can't really tell you anything about it without ruining it for you, but it WILL scare you. There are no 5 minutes that won't either scare you, or get that feeling in your stomach like you know that you're ABOUT to be scared.
Rating: Summary: Horrifying yet a little thin Review: This movie will scare you!! In fact I think it is probably the scariest film I have seen. The movie is intense and definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat and images from the movie are haunting. Yet after leaving the theater I was left with tooo many questions. Things that simply were not explained or were completely illogical. Other than the thin but original plot the movie was fantasitc.
