Summary: AWESOME MOVIE!!!
Review: This is one of the BEST movies of the year! When I saw this at a movie theater the entire audience was screaming and jumping out of their seat throughout the entire movie. M. Night Shyamalan has outdone himself with SIGNS! I cannot wait for the DVD!!!! Judging by all the extra's and cool features on his past DVD's (Sixth Sense and Unbreakable), I'm sure this one will not dissapoint.

Summary: Light-hearted, but spooky
Review: Less is more. "Signs" is not a masterpiece, but it's fun. Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix are charming. The M kids (in reference to the director's penchant for using kids in pivotal roles) are cute. The plot ain't rocket science, but it is initially suspenseful. And, yes, there are numerous homages to famous sci-fi flicks from the past. My favorite scene is when we get our first glimpse of an alien: murky amateur footage taken at a kids birthday party in South America - spooky as hell!

Summary: totally illogical
Review: So these advanced space aliens come from light years away, select Earth to attack, and then are killed by water? Couldn't they see from space that the planet was 2/3'rds water? Have you even gone into a field of corn late at night? You get soaked just from the condensation on the corn stalks. Why weren't there hundreds of aliens killed while knocking down the corn stalks? You see the advanced aliens needed to make crop circles to tell the other aliens where to aim the guns. How ridiculous!

These amazing aliens can leap three stories: from the fields to the top the houses and back down again -- but they can be trapped and held in a food pantry?

Give me a break. At least have a plot that's consistent.

Summary: First-rate entertainment, with some bad ideas
Review: As entertainment, _Signs_ can't be beat. It's both funny and suspenseful, and everyone gives a great performance (especially the kids). I recommend it to anyone.

Having said that, it's not perfect. The biggest problem is with the movie's "message." The film asserts that there are two types of people in the world: people with religious faith, who believe that "everything happens for a reason," and people without religious faith, who think that everything happens according to chance and who therefore have no reason to have hope when the going gets tough. But what about non-religious people who believe in their own ability to use their own mind to deal with whatever may come their way in life? As it's hammering you with its pro-religion message, the film overlooks this alternative.

There is also a bit of a problem with the ending. Not much more can be said without giving away spoilers, but you'd think that if Mr. Shyamalan had thought things through at all, it would have occurred to him that any aliens smart enough to make it to Earth would have been smart enough to anticipate and deal with the "weapon" that's ultimately used against them.

Nonetheless, as I said, I really enjoyed _Signs_, because it's very well done otherwise, and fun to watch. But one should think twice before buying into its "message."

Summary: Not Scary Enough
Review: I went alone. I wasn't all that scared. It was a good film though, funny and surprising. Although just a tad bit predictable. Mel Gibson is great and so is that little girl in the film. It was nicely done.

Summary: Shyamalan goes from great to mediocre to b-movieness
Review: Shame for a director who puts himself on the map with the Sixth Sense goes on to swing and miss with Unbreakable and now rather dissapoints with Signs. Perhaps the order of his movies should've been exactly the other way around because now he's becoming a "take cover, the new film from Shyamalan is out" proposition.
Shame twice because "Signs" could have been a great film and only because someone forgot to hire a script writer the film it was not.
But i'd rather start with the positives. Despite the incredible plot holes i actually enjoyed this b-flick. I enjoyed it because :
a)Mel Gibson, after years of pointless trash films (culminating with the ultra silly What Women Want recently) finally plays a role in which he does not annoy. Now that is news.
b) Because the film holds throughout its b-movie atmosphere and not since the superb Jeepers Creepers about a year ago have i seen a film that maintains its b-movieness in such a convincing way. Why is that good? Because it helps you forget this is Hollywood.
c) Because most of the characters (except the aliens, sadly) are pretty ok and for the most part humorous.
But that's where the candy runs out:
1. The aliens come through as dumb as a wall. I wont give away why (for those that havent seen the film) but man, this must be the sorriest alien invasion ever conceived by anybody on film or not. It's a joke to even call it an invasion. It aint even a farce. What it is is a bunch of aliens full of phobias trying to save their skin and get back home to their sofas.
2. The gapping holes in the script never let up. They go on from the beggining of it and last through to the very (bad) ending. It becomes worse when one thinks that these scenario lapses were perfectly avoidable. Classic case of "what was the script writer thinking???" But, like i said, there wasnt any script writer. I do have the lingering suspicion that Mel wrote the story himself (in which case everything becomes explainable).
3. The ending, and particularly, the last 30 seconds of the film classify it as a "bomb". You need talent to invent an ending as bad as this. Or you need to be working in Hollywood too long. Even if this film had been a great film (and it had massive potential to be) the ending would've totally destroyed it. Utterly unconvincing, and totally beyond the obligatory film-ruining "happy ending", it left me with a feeling of disgust.
All in all, and in one word: pity.

Summary: Great
Review: I haven't seen a great movie in a long time and Signs didn't disappoint, don't expect to spell things out like they did in those biblical epics like the Robe, but I think that they did a pretty good job with this movie.

Its not "horror film" scary, though its suspensful, there is some minor violence. In a way its filmed like those 40's shows like The Twilight Zone. Its suspensful in that way.

There were subtle hints of faith and God and I think that they did a good job of it. Nowadays hollywood usually portrays people of faith in bad lighting, but this one didn't, and I think that it didn't offend for those that aren't religious.

It was very well done.

Summary: Children of the Corn 7...Just kidding
Review: This movie and Children of the Corn do seem to have some elements in common; the brother and his sister who seems to have some kind of ESP, the religious theme and of course, the cornfields. And those kids of the corn were always seeing "signs" in everything. But Signs is much better. Signs is about a man (Mel Gibson) who gives up on God after his wife's tragic death. A few months later, his faith is conveniently tested when crop circles appear in his cornfield. His son and daughter (Culkin and Breslin) are convinced it's the "aliens". His brother (Joaquin Phoenix) is at first doubtful, but soon enough he starts to suspect that this might not be a hoax after all.
The only thing going against Signs is the ending, and I won't give it away. I can understand what the director was going for, and I appreciate it, but it was basically too quickly wrapped up, though everything did tie together quite nicely.
The rest of the movie is great. The acting is good, the tense atmosphere works, and there's even some humor. I can really relate to one guy in the movie who felt that the whole reason they were airing this "phenomenon" on TV was to promote coke during the commercials. Sometimes it feels that way. So, overall, I enjoyed this movie. If only it could have ended better.
