Summary: Yuck.
Review: Is she dead? Or isn't she? Did anything in the movie really happen, or didn't it? Who knows? The real question is, how in the hell did I sit through 83 minutes of this junk? Who knows? Boredom? If only I always I had that much time on my hands.Cassie(Melissa Sagemiller) is about to leave for college, but not before spending one last night partying with her boyfriend Casey Affleck(Ben's brother), her ex-boyfriend Wes Bentley(American Beauty, The Four Feathers), and her best friend Eliza Dushku(Bring It On, The New Guy). The party goes bad when first, the new boyfriend catches Cassie kissing the ex-boyfriend(how soap opera!) and then they all get into a nasty car wreck. Cut to a few months later, Cassie's in college, her boyfriend is supposedly dead, and things basically degenerate into one big incoherent mess of a movie. Let's see, there are creepy guys chasing Cassie around the college, Eliza Dushku is having sex with Angela Featherstone for no apparent reason, the dead boyfriend keeps showing up, there are flashes of an operation, and Cassie meets a young priest(Owen... no wait, Luke Wilson) who seems to know a lot more about what's happening than he's letting on. That's the movie! Throw in some Twilight Zone, a little Jacob's Ladder, and a dash of David Lynch, and you get a movie that's not as good as any of those three things. In fact, this movie [is bad]. While someone like Lynch throws in weird images and disjointed logic for a specific reason, this movie is basically weird for weird's sake. The acting was pretty decent, considering what they had to work with. Eliza Dushku, in particular, is a young actress with real potential. She is much better than most of the flicks she's been in, and here again, she's the best part of a bad movie. Wes Bently, another good one, stick with American Beauty, son. In the end, I think that instead of being a Jacob's Ladder or Mulholland Drive, Soul Survivors is gonna go down with Blair Witch 2 as a wanna be mind bender that didn't quite work.

Summary: This movie sucks
Review: Take Jacob's Ladder, put some hot chicks in it, some kickin' tunes, a lot of buff guys mumbling to themselves, and you have Soul Survivors. I could just leave the review at that, but for those of you who haven't seen Jacob's Ladder, I feel obligated to explain. This is Spoilerland, so run while you can... Still here? Sorry to hear that. Okay, well Jacob's Ladder was about the process the protagonist goes through as he dies. In essence, the few seconds as he struggles between life and death are his purgatory. The movie follows the main character living out his life in those split seconds, and characters become symbols of heaven and hell. Jacob's Ladder had a lot of sneaky hints, like...the guy in white is the angel. He also happens to be a chiropractor. In case you didn't figure it out in the film, the protagonist says stuff like, "You're like an angel." Have you figured out yet that I wasn't too fond of Jacob's Ladder? So you can imagine how much I didn't enjoy Soul Survivors, which is a direct rip off of that film. Only there's even more ridiculous symbolism from the school of M. Night Shyamalan - red is the sign of the bad supernatural guys. And yes, white's the sign of good supernatural guys. And there's a lot of sudden cuts and weird animal noises as the film hops around trying to freak us out. Let me save you five bucks: Cassie is at a party with her other two friends Annabel (played by the I-can't-believe-anyone-hires-her-she's-that-awful actress Eliza Dushku) and Matt (her ex-boyfriend) and her boyfriend, Sean. Cassie gets caught kissing Matt, Sean gets mad, everyone piles into a car and they get into a car accident with two weird guys and a lesbian. Follow me so far? The rest of the movie is like a funkier version of The Others, only without Nicole Kidman's infernal whisper-acting. There's a lot of confusion, a lot of symbolism, a lot of non-events that are supposed to be creepy but just end up becoming frustrating. After five minutes I figured out the Big Secret. And the Big Secret is that Cassie's in the purgatory of her mind. Her boyfriend's actually alive (which is why she thinks he's dead) but the ex-boyfriend and girlfriend are dead and trying to drag her with them into hell. Fortunately, Saint Jude intervenes. That's right. You read that correctly: Saint Jude. I'm not sure why. But he wears white, so we know he's a Good Guy ™. This movie sucks. It's not as bad as say, Species 2, which was just in poor taste. It's just a poorly directed, poorly acted rip off of a movie that wasn't all that great to begin with. Soul Survivors tries SO HARD that I felt bad for the people involved in it. And that's pretty bad.

Summary: Impressive Psycho-Thriller Lovestory
Review: After reading everyone's awful reviews about how bad this movie was, I felt obligated to throw in my two cents. Everyone else said they didn't understand the movie and it was poorly edited, but I really enjoyed this movie and was extremely impressed. I thought the acting was great, especially newcomer Melissa Sagemiller. Wes Bentley's character was a little weird, but I think that's just him. I liked it so much because you don't ever really KNOW. It's pretty open for interpretation and it involves you by letting YOU figure it out for yourself. People are so used to movies with a clear cut ending that they aren't able to truly appreciate this film. I, however, really liked this film and I would recommend it to everyone. I did wish there were more behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, though.

Review: When a young College Student (Melissa Sagemiller) cannot get rid of the guilt of her Boyfriend (Casey Affleck) being killed in a Car Accident, which she was driving & their two friends (Wes Bentley & Eliza Dushku) were with them and their survived also. But the young woman begins to experince the Supernatural, Feeling & Seeing things are not there or is it all in her Head ? Written & Directed by Stephen Carpenter (The Kindred) made a Watchable thriller that try to make it as a Supernatural, Horror, Teensploitation & Reality/Fantasy film that quite doesn`t pull off & the ending is actually a Cop-Out, which is too bad, despite of a Good Cast. Luke Wilson has a small role as a Priest, which he does give a good role here. The Killer Cut Version, changes the Opening and Ending with Extra Scenes or Alternative Scenes, since i haven`t seen the Original Theatrical Cut. Not Bad of it`s type but could have been a much better movie. Grade:B.

Summary: it wasn't that bad
Review: i saw this at a walmart and just bought it. i didn't what i was buying but i got it. all i knew was what i read on the back of the case. the movie is about a group of kids going off to college and enjoying the last free days they have. after going to a weird club (that plays some good music), they get into an accident and the boyfriend dies. now, here the movie just gets interesting. the rest is the main character cassie trying to figure out why her friends are in league with people from the club and why her dead boyfriend keeps appearing with her to come with him. as for how one reviewer put it, the purgatory isn't in the mind of the main character or her friends trying to lead her into hell. it's an actual purgatory and with her friends being dead, they're trying to lead her to death instead of living (which is where the boyfriend is trying to take her). as for the dvd, it's a rated r version of the movie. the original was pg-13 and so far, you can only find the pg-13 on showtime. note of interest, the pg-13 version has a different ending than this version. the dvd has 3 different menus that go with the theme of the movie, reality, nightmare and dream. the features are pretty much nil. the deleted scenes are ok but the audio is awful. the most interesting thing here is about harvey danger which in sorta like "this is spinal tap" except you know this is a real band and have no clue if they're for real. all in all, it's not that bad. all you need to do is just watch it and not get distracted by anything else. i'd definitely recommend renting it before buying it. also, watch this version before the pg-13 version as this version explains some more things that the other...the opening sequence of this one is cut out of the other.

Review: A friend of mine spent some time in Hollywood as a movie producer. He once described to me the pitching process; mover (actor, producer, etc.) says to other mover, "It's like [insert movie title here], only better!" Which means that the pitch for "Soul Survivors" must have gone like: "It's like 'Jacob's Ladder', but with hot college girls, heavy metal, and a happy ending!" Here's what they left out - while "Jacob's Ladder" was a psycho-emotional masterpiece, "Soul Survivors" would be pure dreck. Utterly and totally. Remorseless in its awfulness. Let's begin with the script. The plot is hackneyed and the characters completely worthless. Who the hell cares about a bunch of suburban white kids who drink, party, and die? There's no reason to sympathize with any of them, and the script gives us no reason to even begin thinking of them as worthwhile human beings. There's no emotional tension, several of the scenes are entirely stolen from "Jacob's Ladder" (and utilized here to much less effect), and the dialogue is completely unmemorable. This was a lazily-written script, and writer-director Steve Carpenter should be shot for having dozed through it. The direction itself is pretty awful, too. From the stereotypical-but-unrealistic "goth" party (has a single Hollywood director actually been to a goth club? You wouldn't think so from watching their movies) to the generic liberal-arts college campus (Middleton College - woo-hoo for hamfisted metaphors for Purgatory!) the pathetic attempts to shock (whoa, dead people like kinky sex!), this film feels like exactly what it is - the product of a middle-American imagination suckled with MTV and Nike commercials. The acting? Blase'. Not one performer did anything interesting or of note. Wes Bently played his "mildy creepy teenage white kid" bit with less intensity than in "American Beauty". Eliza Dushku did her "mildly wild-and-sexy" bit as well as always (the only reason I give this flick a single star, because Dushku is good at being a sexy party chick). Affleck and Sagemiller were competely forgettable as actors. Possibly the most damning aspect of the movie is "making-of" featurette. Watching it, you get the sense that none of the actors knew what the movie was about. One has to wonder if the writer-director had a clue, either. Skip this one entirely, unless you really need to see Eliza Dushku play with lesbianism and wet tops. Go directly to "Jacob's Ladder" and see how Adrian Lyne, Tim Robbins, and Danny Aiello did better the first time, and over a decade earlier.

Summary: SOULLESS - TAKE NO SURVIVORS!
Review: A movie that makes no sense. We open with a young girl being attacked by two men who drain her blood and kill her. Then we go on to this bunch of kids going off to college. They go to this strange club in an old church and on the way home they are in a supposed "accident" and all survive except for Ben Affleck's brother.
From there on, this "Carnival of Souls" rip-off fails to come to grips with this psychological babble. There's no real suspense and the ending is contrived and unbelievable. Shame on Luke Wilson for his presence, but his holier than thou priest was believable.
Rent, don't buy.

Summary: Confusing PsychologicalThriller
Review: Cassandra (Melissa Sagemiller) and her friends Sean (Casey Affleck), Matt (Wes Bentley) and Annabelle (Eliza Dushku) are in a car accident. Cassie's boyfriend Sean is killed and Cassie was driving. She never got to tell him that she loved him and as a result of her guilt she becomes trapped in a world that lies between the living and the dead. Sean and priest try to help her find her way out because if she stays there she will die. Twists and turns are expected in this type of movie; but I feel there were too many making it difficult to sort reality from Cassie's horrific guilt ridden nightmare. Still watching the movie more than once helped me sort through it; but a movie should be something you get the first time around. I'd rent this first to see if you really like before you buy it.
