Summary: Darkly Beautiful and Twisted...
Review: When I was younger, "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" was my favorite bedtime story and Disney movie. Here it comes to life with a brilliant twisted director Tim Burton, (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissor Hands, Nightmare Before Christmas) as he puts his own dark but beautiful style into this art. Scenery is very beautiful and realisitic, along with the brilliant acting performances from Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Christopher Walken, Miranda Richardson and more. Contains some disturbing images with gore and blood which fits great into the movie. This is definitely the best Tim Burton movie to date. The eerie and suspensful dark forest is a great touch, along with all the other sets: Church, Windmill, Cave, Town, and the creepy tree of the dead, where the headless horseman keeps his victims' heads. This DVD however, has a boring uninteractive menu, with hardly any bonus features, so I suggest waiting, if you truely love this movie, for a more packed DVD. Breathtaking special effects and acting make this movie a gem for all movie collectors!!!

Summary: A hollow film that will leave you sleepy
Review: Johnny Depp is good as always, but his character is very uneven. Am I the only one who noticed that? For example, he starts off very confident in the opening scene and seems to be brave, but for the rest of the movie it's as if he's someone else. Even more surprising is that a mortician would always be so shocked and horrified at the site of gory bodies! (Wasn't Ichabod Crane a school teacher in the original? That would have made more sense in this version too.) The only thing that saves this one from getting one star is that visually it's very good. Fantastic photography! This is classic "style over substance" as in most of Burton's films. There are fantastic sets and Burton's trademark style of imagery make it very watchable. I guess my biggest disappointment was it's just not scary. Also the plot gets way too thick towards the end and by then you don't care anymore who gets their head chopped off. Tim Burton must pick movies based on the potential for visually exciting sets than for the story or script. That would explain awful films like Batman and Edward Scissorhands. There were some unintentially funny moments too. Particularly the scenes in which Depp is shocked over and over. You would think after seeing lots of bizarre things, he'd be a little desensitized to it all. Oh well. It was worth a look anyway. If you want to see a much better Tim Burton/Johnny Depp film, then check out "Ed Wood".

Summary: I Didn't Think It Could Be Done...
Review: ...usually I HATE it when a classic story is "updated", but I've got to admit that I really enjoyed "Sleepy Hollow" with Johnny Depp. Rather than the self-absorbed schoolteacher in the original, this Ichabod Crane is a police inspector come from New York City to investigate a rash of decapitations in the hamlet of Sleepy Hollow. Depp's Crane is a proponent of forensic science, and is trying out all kinds of gadgetry while attempting to solve this grisly mystery. And did I forget to mention that this is a comedy? Black humor, to be sure, but I really enjoyed this version of Washington Irving's horror story.

Review: Dark, eerie and hauntingly beautiful. A true masterpiece. A style that can only be Burton, the art was beautiful.

Summary: Rebirth of a Classic
Review: Oh, my what a film. New view of an old classic. This picture draws you in, and never lets go. It's nice to see a revival of such a wonderful story. Christina Ricci is marvelous as Katrina, and Johnny Depp provides a fresh take on Ichabod. Probably the best of all was Christopher Walken, whose time was short, yet powerful enough to scare this seasoned horror fan out of her seat. A truely haunting and enjoyable film.

Summary: A movie that will leave you at the edge of your seat!
Review: This movie is great. A bit gruesome for just about any age. Of course, keep in mind this adapatation of the book is no where near it (with the exception of the characthers.) In the original story, no one is murdered and the headless hessian is just a hoax. Not so the movie. Constable Ichabod Crane tries to prove justice needs explanation but is sent on his way to Sleepy Hollow to investigate and track down the person responsible for 3 deaths. He, thinks that it is no Hessian spirit. But as the victims pile up, so does his encounters with the undead rider! Alas, I cannot say more, only you can view for yourself. But I give this great movie a 5! Whoo hoo!

Summary: Not-So-Sleepy Hollow
Review: Typical of a Burton film Sleepy Hollow is richly atmospheric. What is potentially a dark and gloomy tale is made lively through Depp's delightful and off-beat treatment of Ichabod Crane - a shy, outwardly timid and cowardly detective. Much of the movie serves as an homage to the classic horror genre.

Burton's quirky, artistic style establishes the visual gloom of the movie, which is offset by much of the inherit humour derived from Crane's fish-out-of-water syndrome - a 19th century detective trying to scientifically discover a supposedly supernatural killer. The artistic expression of Burton and Depp truly complement each other well as can be seen in Edward Scissorhands, and now in Sleepy Hollow.

Burton is ever conscious of atmosphere throughout this movie, and so pacing is affected with the climax and resolution falling short. However, the overall effect produces a solid, entertaining and somewhat ironic film. While rather predictable plotwise, the film relies on atmosphere and characterisation to carry it.

Only fans of Burton's style may care to add this DVD to their collection.

Summary: A Good Movie
Review: The first thing that struck me in this movie was Christina Ricci's blond hair!! I first saw this movie at a theater, and I remember really liking the plot. Depp's character does not know it all, and neither do we. There's not the same dramatic irony that there are in a lot of thrillers. An interesting sequence of events.
