Summary: long, boring and going nowhere
Review: this hurricane story should have been made as documentary instead of the highly hyped movies. i fell asleep and awoke so many times during the long darkness. there almost no story at all and i would prefer watching the 'green mile' or 'shoshine redemption(?} three times in a row instead of watching this bore-to-death movies. terrible waste of the great danzel washington. lousy director and screenplay. take a shot of nicotin or caffeine before inserting the video tape and turning on the tv in case you fell sleep.

Summary: Hurricane is A Stinking Mess
Review: Gee, I didn't know that Hurricane Carter and Malcolm X were the same person!

...Well, when left in the hands of the one-note Denzel Washington, they sure are. I thought I loved Malcolm X, but I gotta go re-watch my tape of it just to make sure after seeing this groaner by Norman Jewison. Denzel is sort of impressive (at moments), but it's deja vu time, kids.

This pic stunk like a plate of fish left under the couch in August. Its hilarious simplicity is merely peppered with interesting moments.

Did anyone READ THE SCRIPT before signing on to this stinker?

This is a TV-movie-quality schmaltzy biopic. Alternatively, you could use it to introduce justice issues to a 9th-grade civics class. Beyond that, its simplistic, pedantic tone is an insult to the viewer. I'm so glad I didn't go to the theater to watch this trash...I caught it on Cable last night.

I howled in fits of laughter as one idiotic scene followed another, culminating in the hilarious courtroom scene. The kid was particularly annoying, as were the weirdo squad of Canadian do-gooders.

Chalk this up as a really bad version of "Coal Miner's Daughter."

I'm not unimpressed by Carter's wrenching story...it's the moronic way in which the story was told that makes me feel that this was a waste. This was their chance to make a GREAT big-budget picture about an important story. As it was done, it's crap and they'll not get the chance again soon.

It seems that Carter is an interesting character of some strength, but I say throw him back in the slammer (along with Jewison and Washington) for letting them make such a lousy pic about him. It's a crime.

Summary: Great movie...
Review: Before this movie I didn't have a clue who "The Hurricane" was. I watched this movie to find out who he was and because I read great reviews on Denzel Washington's performance. The reviews were definitely on point along with the Oscar nomination he recieved (which he should've won). Denzel Washington's acting was superb. The movie is about a boxer who went to prison wrongfully accused of murder, who then was helped to freedom by a young man and his Canadian tutors after reading his autobiography which "Hurricane" wrote while he was in prison. Hurricane was another black man who had no luck in the US Justice system and didn't recieve a fair trial until the case went to federal court where all the lies were uncovered and the truth set free. This was a wonderful movie. It made me cry and also angry at the injustice and also the racism. I was elated when "Hurricane" was released from a trying time in prison. This movie will be around for a while and maybe become a classic.

Summary: Full of message you want to receive.
Review: This film gave me a sense of freedom of soul when I was depressed. It also made me realize power of believing in somebody's soul. It's sometimes very difficult for me to trust others around me or to make them trust me. But if you have courage to go on what you are doing, you can see sky as beautiful as "love and justice" sometime in the future. That's what this film taught me. Actually some episode seemed too romantic for me, for example three Canadaian men and women are too kind and naive. However, the performance of Denzel Washington is wonderful. I rate this film as five stars mainly because of his realizing of a real story of a real man. He is fantastic.

Summary: Another Brilliant Performance by Denzel Washington!
Review: As seems to be the case these days with me, I was unexpectedly captivated by this story. The character development at the beginning was a little jumpy, but once I figured out who was who, I was hooked! If you sit down to watch this "film" (and it truly is a "film" and not just a "movie"!) looking forward to 2 hours of boxing, you will be sorely disappointed. My husband and I were hesitant because it is the story of a prize fighter and boxing is not at the top of our favorite subject list. However, once again, Denzel Washington does not let us down. His performance is brilliant - for that matter, all of the casting was brilliant. While the rest of the cast may have "supporting" roles, they are, each in their own right, "leading" characters in this film, for without them and the strength of their acting, this story would lose its captivating qualities. I cannot say enough good things about "The Hurricane" - all I can tell you is to enjoy it. And don't forget to watch all of the special features which are part of the DVD - you won't be disappointed, and, believe me, by the time you are done, you will have gotten much more than your money's worth!

Summary: Thought Provoking Film
Review: This is a film that really makes you think. I have always thought that one of the worst things that can happen to a person is to be sent to prision for a crime they did not commit. Was Rubin Carter innocent of the crimes he was accused? I do not know. The movie would have you believe that every crime he was convicted of he was innocent of. Is that true? Again, I don't know. Was there racial injustices in America in the 1960s? Of course! Could this be the reason Rubin Carter spent so many years in jail? Perhaps.

If you take out all of the debate on the guilt or innocence of this man and view the film, as the director did, that he was indeed innocent of the crimes he was convicted of then this is a very powerful film. 30 plus years of a man's life was taken away from him for no good reason! This takes me to another question: Could this happen today? Or perhaps an even more powerful thought: Could this happen to me?

This film really does makes you think.

Summary: Very well done movie - Yet very liberal with the facts
Review: I really did like this movie, infact I probably would have given it 4 or 5 stars if it had been purely fictional and not an attempt to tell a real story. First, the good stuff:

Denzel Washington was fantastic, and through this movie, as well as 'Remember the Titans', he has become one of my favorite actors. Through the course of the movie, he becomes a very likeable character that made you feel intensely angry at the injustice and prejudice that he was victim to. The storyline of the movie was fairly concrete and seamless, and was sure to keep the viewer engrossed in the film.

But the major problem with this film was that it portrayed everything in black and white. The idea became simple: Rubin Carter was nothing but good and the police, the courts, and the jurors became nothing but evil.

Very little shades of grey can be found, and as a result it makes this film very one dimensional. And in all honesty, I could deal with that had that been true of the actual events surrounding Rubin Carter's incarceration. But it isn't. In reality there was substantial evidence against Rubin Carter that led to his conviction, almost all of which the film left out. The film also fails to depict Carter as the angry, bitter, and violent person, that even his biography tells us, he was. And while I'm definitely not saying that Rubin Carter did infact murder three innocent people, I am saying that there are two sides to this story. It's just a shame that Mr. Jewison felt it necessary to show only one of them.

Summary: A touching humane story
Review: The story of guilt and innocence, the age of injustice and the racial discrimination existing in our lands today. A film of great vision and immeasurable depth, a masterpiece of our time. The story of a undefeatable boxer falsely accused of murder and sentenced to life in prison. During the time, he becomes an educated gentlemen and publishes a book, the sixteenth round. With the support of a young black student, Rubin Carter gains a fair trial and ultimately, his independence and the life he never had...

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Another piece of Hollywood make-believe
Review: The makers of this movie and most of the reviewers endlessly repeat the manta that "Rubin Carter was wrongly convicted of a crime he did not commit, twice, and then after 20 years an appeals judge overturned his conviction and declared him innocent."

That's flat-out wrong, even according to this whitewash of a movie. If you look at Judge Rod Serling and listen to what he says, he declares that racism was apparently a factor at the trial and therefore the verdict must be set aside. This is NOT the same as declaring Carter innocent....
