Summary: Movie is OK, music is great if one likes "proper" blues
Review: I read this week that Don Johnson's career was almost destroyed by this film. I can't think why, because although the story is not great, and we have to put up with seeing his naked butt once or twice, the film as a whole is not too bad. And for anyone who likes blues, the sort played by John Lee Hooker, the soundtrack is excellent, virtually throughout. I don't rate Don Johnson that highly as an actor, since, for instance, Sonny Crockett and Nash Bridges strike me as being the same character (based in different cities), but he is not bad, and that he should be panned for trying to do something different, like this film, seems unfair to me. If you like blues, watch this film.

Summary: More than the sum of Jennifer Connelly's parts.
Review: I used to dismiss Don Johnson as a pretty boy who couldn't act. The Hot Spot proved me wrong. Virginia Madsen (Whatever happened to her?) is also great. Barry Corbin plays a Texas sheriff as only he and the late Ben Johnson could. Half thriller/ half Tennessee Williams, this movie is clever, funny and has an ending that actually surprised me -a rarity.

And if that doesn't do it for you, Jennifer Connelly (who is so sweet in this movie, you actually cheer on Johnson when he... No, I won't spoil it.) does have a jaw-dropping topless scene on the beach. I recommend watching the WHOLE movie though.

Summary: BEAUTIFULLY SHOT AND UNDERRRATED MOVIE
Review: I'm a little partial to this movie, just because I had a chance meeting with Virginia Madsen while she was filming "THE HOT SPOT". It was a fond memory for me, because it was my first real up-close encounter with a STAR and to top it off, she was such a genuine, friendly and welcoming person. She invited me to have dinner with her and her friends. In the short time we talked, we became friends and I just thought she was fantastic; and still do.

Anyway, I still think it was a very well done movie. Beautifully shot and perfectly cast. Don Johnson starred as the smooth drifter with mysterious intentions, the always stunning Jennifer Connelly and of course VIRGINIA.

Dennis Hopper directed it, and he really captured the heat of the setting and really delved into the depths of the characters involved.

Summary: A 'Slice of Americana' Film Brilliantly Directed by Hopper!
Review: If a list of top 100 most unappreciated films was ever composed, this movie would make the top ten easily. Siskel & Ebert raved about this movie, and if you give it a try, you'll see why! Well written, expertly cast and almost flawlessly directed by Dennis Hopper, this movie brings small town America to life like few others in recent memory. A steamy tale indeed, put the kiddies to bed before starting this one. Don Johnson and Virginia Madsen are perfect in their parts, and I defy any male to watch this movie and NOT fall in love with the character (Gloria Harper) played by stunning Jennifer Connelly. I could write a 1000 words alone on how good each actor was in their part, main actors AND "small-part" actors, and perhaps that was the genius of this movie; chemistry among the characters that WORKED! Combine that with a plausible and well written story line, set in a uniquely small town America setting, and just plain solid movie making compliments of director Dennis Hopper, and you have "The Hot Spot", a movie that any movie connoisseur can't watch just once! Excellent!

Summary: Oh, Jennifer!!!!
Review: It's true Jennifer's topless scene is very nice for us guys
but, that is not all this movie offers. The acting in this film is
good all way round. (At least in my eyes) Hopper is exellent at
bringing the southern heat to the screen and telling an offbeat
story that's fun to watch and that's what it's all about! I think
this movie is an overlooked gem and i watch it at least once a year!

Oh, Yeah!.... Did i mention Jennifer Connelly???

Summary: Jennifer Connelly?
Review: Oh, yeah, she's in this too, isn't she? Let's see... The brunette, yeah.

Good. Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get serious and admit that Virginia Madsen is this film's proper eye candy. Yes, my enduring weakness for brassy blondes makes my opinion biased, but can anyone deny that Madsen dominates the rectangle whenever she's in view? Yes, yes, I know, the performance is cartoonish, camp, comical--I'm pretty sure that's what the role calls for--Barbara Stanwick on steroids--but she slides into the femme fatale with ease, has fun with it, and even gives it some depth, some mystery, a hint of pathos.

Have fun counting the number of times she uses a body double for the nude scenes. (Hint: The camera follows her as she runs behind a tree beside the old mill, late at night. Is that really Virginia running out the other side?)

Have fun with the her bizarre lines: ("I'm f---ing you to death, George!")

Truly a great, ham-it-up performance by a versatile actress who never really got her due.

Not to detract from Don Johnson's performance. He's almost perfectly cast here.

Review: SLEAZY DRIFTER DON COMES TO A DUSTY SMALL TOWN AND PROCEEDS TO RAISE HELL WITH THE LOCALS,INCLUDING A EVIL VIRGINIA MADSEN AND NAIVE JENNIFER CONNOLY.........DIRECTOR DENNIS HOPPER DOES A NICE JOB HERE....THE MOVIES STYLISH, NEVER DULL AND HAS GOOD PERFORMANCES FROM ALL THE LEADS......I LIKED HOW HOPPER OFFERS A CLUE TO THE ENDING OF THE MOVIE,IN THE SCENE WHERE DON IS STANDING IN THE LIVING ROOM LOOKING UP AT VIRGINIA ON THE STAIRS LANDING......FROM WHERE HES LOOKING,SHES STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO A FEROCIOUS STUFFED POLAR BEAR, AND WE SEE THINGS FROM WHERE SHES STANDING, AND TO HER,HE PROBABLY SEEMS LIKE ONE OF THE STUFFED PLAYTHINGS BY HER FEET.............HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Summary: A Waste Of Good 35mm Film
Review: This is a confusing, sweaty mess of a film, that tries to be a sexy story of southern seduction, and turns into nothing more then a tribute to the heat and humidity of the south. If not for the tallent (and body) of Jennifer Connelly, this movie would be a total waste
