Rating: Summary: Hitchcockian! Review: This movie is superb. The director uses subtle foreshadowing and little clues to let the viewer know what is happening. Movies like these, shot with Hitchcock-like style, are the ultimate in viewing fun. A must see!
Rating: Summary: ASIANS DON'T COUNT! Review: I was offended! In Mamet's world, it appears to be "normal" to think of Asians as incapable of witnessing criminal behavior. We're supposed to be "surprised" when the Asian intervenes.
Rating: Summary: Great, but one big goof Review: The movie is intricate and cleverly written, but there's a major screwup in one scene, that I would have missed were it not for DVD. It's in scene 13, and it involves the red book. Repeat that scene after you've watched the film and you'll understand. And keep your eye on the book. And by the way, one scene was directly ripped off in Michael Mann's "The Insider". And the way I remember it, the scene is stolen in the Pacino film almost verbatim! Hint-it involves company lawyers.
Rating: Summary: Mamet rules Review: I love this film and find it fascinating on several levels. Things are not exactly as they seem, the plot is labyrinthine (but scrutable), the dialogue is spare and stark (a Mamet trademark) but surprisingly compelling, and the ending will mess with your mind. Give it a whirl!
Rating: Summary: GARBAGE ! Review: Say what you wanna say: that this is art, the this movie is intelligent, that it is movie for people with brains, etc, etc. Keep on saying Mammet is a master. say what you want! But this movie is garbage, the worst garbage I've ever seen! The actor are disgustingly uninspired, the pace is almost nonexistant, everything is riduculous. The history is a third-class "mystery" case. Blergh!
Rating: Summary: HORRIBLE. A FAKE, nothing more. Review: I've watched "GLENGARRY GLENN ROSS". It is very slow-paced, but since the first minute you can almost feel yourself in the skin of a salesman with nowhere to sell his products, on the verve of loosing his job. The actor are splendid (Pacino, Lemmon, Ed Harris, what more do you want). But in this "SPANISH PRISONER", look at the cast: it is simply bad directed by the same director. Campbell is horrible, nothing in him. Martin is horrible also, everybody seems to be sleeping. Buta Mammet is Mammet, and he will always have good reviews from his blind fans.
Rating: Summary: Your intelligence level can be gauged by your like or dislik Review: Your intelligence level can be gauged by your like or dislike of this film. If you dislike this film, you probably have never been able to enjoy anything of literary or artistic achievement in your entire shallow existence. This film was immaculate on so many different levels that probably couldn't permeate your cartoon soaked brains. Mammet takes the cons he introduced in 'House of Games' and takes it to the Nth degree. This guy rules. If you liked this you will definetely like 'Glengarry Glen Ross'.
Rating: Summary: How can opinions vary so much? Review: It's perplexing to read the variety of opinions for this film. How can some viewers resent the time spent watching it, when others love it? I thought it was well done, suspenseful to the point of making my head ache (but my head used to ache with distress at the predicaments Laurel & Hardy would get into), and the plot twists left me gasping. By the way, perhaps others besides me tend to discredit reviews with misspellings and grammatical errors. People, you should read more and watch less television!
Rating: Summary: MAMMET'S WORST EFFORT ! HORRIBLE MOTION PICTURE! Review: THis great director is only living by his fame in this lousy film. Due to his legion of fans, he still gets great reviews to this horrible movie, where he seemed to forget the basic rule that the first 15 minutes must, at least, show the audience whio is who and what's all about. The character are laughable and with awkward actings, like if directed by someone who doesn't care for the movie. Steve Martin is horrible (like in all recent movies he has made), Campbell Scott doesn't convince anybody, the plot is unbearable. And some people still give this farse a 5-star rating...
Rating: Summary: ATTENTION: Terrible Film! Review: The Spanish Prisoner is an interesting story with continual plot twists. However, it was continually ruined by poor acting (save Steve Martin's performance) and predictable outcome. With sickeningly sweet dialog like, "It's a lovely gesture" and "That would be lovely." Who says, "lovely", these days? Rebecca Pidgeon's performance was like watching a piece of cardboard try to act. She cannot take all the blame for a screenplay that forced poorly written scenes and dialog down the actor's throats. I kept asking myself while watch this film, "Why is the main character doing something so stupid?" After 112 minutes of watching this film, it was obvious that the makers of this film thought they had pulled off a really slick story. On the contrary, I felt slighted to be taken for granted in such a patronizing film.
