Summary: Historic, but not really great
Review: I suppose it is a big deal for a star like Hanks to stand up before a camera and say, "I am gay, I have AIDS." I just wish it had happened in a better film. Hanks won an Oscar for his performance as a gay lawyer with AIDS, the first of two in a row. His performance here is all right--but does not compare to his work in "Big" or "Apollo 13". His part is paper-thin in "Philadelphia". The true great performance in this move comes from Denzel Washington, as an ambulance chaser who does not know how he feels about homosexuals or the man he represents in court. The part and the performance have complexities that Hanks doesn't even have the opportunities to explore. If you want to see an excellent film about the hazards of being gay and having AIDS, watch "Jeffery," starring Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard of TV's "Star Trek: the Next Generation"). If you want to see the best performance of 1993, see Liam Neeson in "Schindler's List." If you want to see the first major star to play a gay man with AIDS, see this one.

Summary: A touching movie........
Review: I thought this was a wonderful movie. Tom Hanks acting is just terrific! Everyone else is great in the story too. I personally thought it was a sad story....and I must warn you....if you upset easily, don't watch this movie. America is "All Men Are Created Equal" not, "All Stright Men Are Created Equal"....some people need to learn that.

Summary: Pretty Good
Review: This movie was the first mainstream(I think) film to fully confront AIDS and gay discrimination. The direction and cinematography are excellent, Tom Hanks is... not GREAT, but better than just GOOD. Denzel Washington is pretty good, but Mary Steenburgen is EXCELLENT as the firm's defense lawyer. She feels sorry for Hanks' character but does her duty as a lawyer to defend the company, all with dignity and respect. I'm not sure if she got an Oscar or even a nomination for this role, but she SHOULD have.

Summary: Great movie with excellent acting
Review: This movie was great! I enjoyed it very much. The first time I watched it the part in the court room disturbed me greatly, (Were Tom Hanks falls out), but after watching it several more times I have concluded that the movie was written and acted superly. It makes you think what would I do? If you were his Mother, Father, Brother, Sister, or even his Lawyer. I would be like Washington at first and not want to touch him at all. I especially liked the part where he is first in Washington's office and has just told Washington that he has AIDS and then lays his hat on the desk. Washington just sits and stares at the hat as to say, I'm going to have to get some Lysol sprayed there when he leaves. Exactly what I would do.

Summary: Touching
Review: This movie is altogether a poignant story, well-acted, and consistently entertaining. Hanks delivers an especially fine performance, and the acting chemistry between him and Denzel Washington is great. Certainly worth seeing.

Summary: Philadelphia was amazing!
Review: As an AIDS advocate, I think that the movie "Philadelphia" was fantastic. Tom Hanks portrayed his character Andrew Beckett wonderfully! Beckett was an aspiring lawyer for a very prestigious firm, until he was fired. Beckett is convinced that he was fired because a partner had found out that he had the AIDS virus. Beckett turns to lawyer Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) to represent him. Miller is reluctants, however out of justice does. This movie takes the veiwer on a rollercaster of emotion and hard core humanity in both positive and negitive ways. "Philadelphia" in my oppinion, is a tribute to thoes dying of AIDS, their friends and family and thoes who are to ignorant to realize their prejudicial ways. Five Stars to "Philadelphia" and Tom Hanks!

Summary: Thoughtful, although perhaps too soft
Review: The movie has something that makes it more appealling...Tom Hanks. Hanks is the most non-threatening homosexual possible, with a totally supporting family and beautiful lover. He is non-political, well spoken and not effeminate...all the things gays "should be" in the eyes of most.

Get beyond all that and you still have a movie that will make you cry. And in the final analysis, good characters, emotional connections and a great plot make for a great movie.

Summary: This was a great movie
Review: Despite what that hyperactive christian reich person says, I thought this movie was great. So what if it was about a gay man? It could be about anyone nowadays. And hey, if the christian reich person knew what this was about, why did he/she watch it? I think it's just another excuse to force their agenda down our throats. And there was no warning for that!

Summary: a slow moving bore
Review: this film supposedly is an outcry against homophobia? It is merely a two hour bore which not only does not deliver the message but drags along at a snails pace. The story is dull and denzel washington is wasted here. Tom Hanks is always cast in dull movies anyway. If you want an efd exciting film on this theme try Victim with dirk bogart

Summary: Heart Wrenching - Hanks and Washington were Excellent!!
Review: Excellent Movie. It tastefully shows the ignorance and compassion of others.
