Summary: this movie should be in your top five favorites
Review: Occasionally, Hollywood spits out a quality movie like this one. They are stories of survival, survival of the fittest. Andy and Red were survivors. In the end, they both realized their hopes and dreams. It's no mistake that they picked the most ominous and scary prison they could find. The filmakers want you to feel that there is no hope in a place like that. They want you to feel that any inmate sent there can count on a miserable stay. Some would say that there was too much violence in the movie. What you have got to remember is Violence is a fact of life. I would suspect that violence like that was fairly common in that time. If you want to do a movie, you would want to depict it as true to life as you possibly can.

All that aside, the movie is spectacular. The movie is a little long, but it is necessary to the story. Remember, Andy was in prison for almost 20 years! His planning to escape was continuing throghout that whole time.

In the opinion of this film critic it is a must see.

Summary: Brilliant! A total SURPRISE!
Review: This film was first recommended to me by my English teacher in high school. I thought "Oh, yeah, some boring movie about a man named Shawshank who has some sort of religious redemption." However, I ended up somehow seeing the film and could not have been more astounded! This is one of the best films I have EVER seen. It has afforded me great pleasure numerous times - each time I notice more and more of the carefully crafted details! Brilliant acting in a film that will answer the question "Why do I go to the movies anyway?" Everytime I am given renewed faith in humanity (it sounds cheesy, but it's true!), and leave with my face covered in tears, beaming a huge smile! If you are any sort of mystery/suspense fan, this will be much appreciated! However there is something in this film for everyone! Highly recommended!

Summary: Very good but too violent
Review: This film is very good in the sense that the acting was terrific and the plot was very good.

They could have cut down on the senseless violence that went on in the film. There was no need for that kind of brutal violence. Any light-hearted oerson would have flinched at the thought of the violence that went on.

I'll put it into perspective of a person who would take it seriously

There was no need for the brutal attack on Andy DuFrain by Boggs and the "Sisters".

There was also no need for the brutal attack by the captain of the guards, Mr. Hatley.

There was also no need for the brutal murder of Tommy who was going to testify against the murderer of Andy's ex-wife.

To sum up, the film was good, but too violent

Summary: Splendor of Delight
Review: Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are so good in this movie together it makes your jealous of their acting skills. The plot is unique, orginal, smart, and most importantly WELL DONE. I cried, i lauged and i defiantly saw it again and i still am. If you have not encounterted upon this film go see it at once.

Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: This movie deserves its reputation as one of the best ever. It is a story about hope and how anything can be overcome, but done so well that you don't notice it. I have hardly seen Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman more brilliant. Despite its length, it is not boring. It reveals and shades the characters deeper throughout the movie. The ending of the movie is highly rewarding and deeply satisfying.

Summary: Close to Being The Best Movie of All Time
Review: I love this movie, and everything about it. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. It's one of those movies that could be 4 hours long, and you would not care or notice because it so well done. We've seen movies in situations about jail life, but in my oppinion, no movie has ever captured the moment like Shawshank Redemption. All the actors do there finest work in this movie. Even the minor ones deserve awards for performance. This is a movie for women and men. Besides the Star Wars Trilogy, this is my favorite movie of all time.

Summary: My all-time favorite
Review: I love a lot of movies, but this one's still my favorite. The story is fascinating from the first scene to the wonderful ending, which never fails to bring tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. If only Stephen King's books were all this good...

Summary: Lacking in surprizes? Hardly!
Review: I can not beleive that anyone would say this movie lacked surprises. I remember the first time I watched this film. The friend who was showing it too me was avantly hushing all around: "You have to play close attention!" she said in an excited whisper as the opening scene began. "All of this is going to be important. You don't want to miss anything!" Just recently I happened to be in our dorm lobby as another person was showing this to a "first-timer." (I've watched the movie five times and I still discover new things about it.) "Shhhh!" She said...pay attention...you don't want to miss any of this! All of it ties in lator." It made me smile. That's just the type of movie this is. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat, but is ridden with meaning, too. It's a movie English major's and action flick fans both get excited about--it hits on many different levels. Shawshenk Redemption is one of, if not the best movie I have ever watched (to be more specific, it was the BEST movie I ever watched until I saw Good Will Hunting. Now I can't decide which is better.)
