Summary: Breathtaking film takes police-action genre to a NEW LEVEL
Review: Fasten your seat belt when you watch Training Day. Within minutes after it starts Training Day is dominated by Denzel Washington's Oscar-winning performance as Officer
Alonzo Harris. Take a deep breath (you'll need it) and get ready to watch a film peppered with non-stop action, gritty settings, escalating violence, and surprising plot twists. Directed at break-neck pace by Antoine Fuqua, Training Day has flaws (some plot holes and coincidences), but it works due to Washington's type-shattering performance.

Let's face it: if ever Hollywood had a "good guy" who audiences LIKED because he seemed like an old friend and NICE guy, it has been Denzel Washington. Forget all the press hype about political and personal factors influencing the Oscar vote: when you see Training Day you'll witness evil incarnate as you watch Washington's portrayal of the corrupt, manipulative and brutal Officer Harris -- providing evidence beyond a doubt that Washington is one of today's greatest actors.

The setting is Los Angeles (one of the biggest stars of this movie) where crooked narc Harris must train his new rookie, star-eyed partner, Jake, played by Ethan Hawke in a career-boosting role. Hawke creates the perfect conscience-ridden counterpoint to Washington's amoral, immoral Harris. Indeed, Hawke's finely-tuned performance, making Jake increasingly sympathetic and complex, provides a glaring context for Harris' evil.

Bit by bit, the naive, idealistic Jake is shoved down and force-fed street-reality by the cynical, sociopathic Harris. You can literally feel Hawke's rookie struggling with how criminal and law enforcement distinctions increasingly blur. By the end of this film, Jake seems "older" while the steely Harris' seems a mere street thug...but get ready for some surprises.

Aside from Washington's and Hawke's on-the-edge performances, Training Day boasts several jarring and highly satisfying plot twists. Don't expect a mere police drama
with lots of chases, screeching tires and nothing more. Training Day takes the violent, gritty police-and-mean-streets genre to an entirely new level -- while Washington propels his acting into the artistic stratosphere.

Summary: Intelligent Action
Review: This is the best-written, best-directed, best-acted action flick I have ever seen. Antoine Fuqua handles its complicated sequences and plot convolusions masterfully. Denzel Washington gives us a controlled and yet explosive portrayal of a character whose multiple layers peel away until we see the raw creature at the core. Ethan Hawke does his best work in years. Fuqua also uses an incredible supporting cast to their best advantage, including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Macy Gray. The scene of her screaming over the fence at Washington is worth the movie all by itself. The dialogue is consistently intelligent. It has been ages since I've seen a script that tells a such a complicated story so effectively. And, last but not least, the production values are worthy of the rest of the film. This movie is a treat for the eyes, the ears, and the mind.

Summary: Great flick
Review: If you aren't into violence or profanity I would recommend you look for something else. In my opinion this movie was awesome and well made. Of course, it can get your blood boiling and it does keep you on the edge of your seat at times. Its just a "Wow" movie in my book. This is Denzel's best performance. It nice to see him in a different role and away from the goody two shoes man.

Summary: A Pleasant Surprise
Review: I first saw this movie after the oscar nominations were announced, mainly because i wanted to see if it was as good as everyone had been saying it was. I was pleasantly surprised by Hawke more than Washington, only because I've come to expect Washington being good in any movie. He has proven that in most cases, he can rise above lackluster material, e.g. "The Hurricane."

Even though the movie wouldn't have been really noticed or good, for that matter, without Washington's great, if a bit over-the-top, performance, it is Hawke's subtly as the rookie, that makes the movie really work.

To be honest, the movie isn't as good as it could have been. It has some story holes, and a conventional, predictable ending, but the performances of the two stars more than make up for it.

Summary: The BIg D
Review: Denzel Washington! He's so talented that he can go against the grain, against the type casting, and make you believe that he's bad. And let me quote from the movie "see that? that's sexy!"

Summary: FAR TOO VIOLENT FOR MY TASTE
Review: Not a typical role for Denzel, but being that I love his acting abiity I thought I would watch the movie. Suffice it to say that the movie was far more violent for my taste, and the ending wasn't to my liking....I thought it would have been far more satisfying to have denzels character caught and punished for his crimes rather than to see him go down like that....I felt like it was the same o' same o' sterotype of the african-american male who is either a drug-dealer, rapist, murderer etc. I left the theater feeling disgusted, utterly disatisfied and that the movie had been a total waste of my time and money...

Summary: DENZEL'S BEST ROLE YET!
Review: I THINK EVERYBODY WAS SHOCKED YET IMPRESSED WITH THE ROLE DENZEL PLAYED IN THIS MOVIE. HE MADE THE CHRACTER SEEM SO REAL. EVERYONE IS SO USED TO DENZEL'S GOOD GUY ROLES BUT TRAINING DAY SHOWS THE BAD GUY ROLE THAT DENZEL IS ABLE TO PLAY. I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT DENZEL IS AN INCREDIBLE ACTOR AND HAS BEEN SINCE HE'S BEEN IN THE BUSINESS. DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, JUST SEE THE BEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN TRAINING DAY.

Summary: Whoa....
Review: Wow. I have to admit, my heart raced during the first viewing of this movie. Very realistic moments.

I really didn't know what to expect from this movie. The movie takes you in as if you are Ethan Hawke's character. What a ride. Good movie.
