Summary: It was 3 hours? I didn't even notice
Review: The dvd arrived yesterday and I was at a friend's house when we decided to watch it, it was the first time for both and we were totally engrossed... we laughed and cried and then were completely surprised to find that 3 hours had passed. The story-telling is riveting and the character portrayals are excellent! Others have praised Michael Clarke Duncan for his "Coffey" but I was very pleased when "Brutus" showed his face for the first time for David Morse is an excellent yet largely ignored actor... Michael Jeter, Sam Rockwell, and Doug Hutchison also turn in superb performances. It is true that this movie isn't perfect and that I was able to anticipate some of the plot points. However, the performances and the story-telling more than make up for it.

Summary: Good Anti-Death Penalty Film
Review: The Green Mile is a film set on death row and focuses on two main characters: a guard (Tom Hanks) and a prisoner (Michael Duncan). And with the throwing in of the inevitable King supernatural twist, is overall well done. The only believability flaw I saw was the fact that the death row guards were all compassionate except for Percy, the one mean misfit guard. I think James Woods' film, "Killer: a Journal of Murder" depicted the real death row: brutal guards and maybe one oddball compassionate one. Michael Duncan was great as Jon Coffey, sentenced to Old Sparky for the brutal murder of 2 girls. I think the story line was (perhaps subconsciously) based on the crucifixion of Christ who (they say) died for the world's sins. You may notice some age discrepancies through the film, but King (who is notorious for bad Math) must have realized his mistake and made up an ending that "fixes" it. Obviously the story's logistics got a bit tangled as the serial novel went on. Probably it would have been better had it not been framed as a flashback. Overall a good rendering of the King covert anti-death penalty story.

Summary: Good Movie, but too long
Review: I am generally not a fan of Tom Hanks but I got to admit the Green Mile was a very nice heart warming story. The only problem I believe was the movie was way too long, that is the only thing that is preventing me from handing this movie 5 stars. This movie is a very similiar to the Shawshank Redemption also. I recommend anyone who is a fan of Tom Hanks to buy this movie.

Summary: One of the best Stephen King adaptions ever!
Review: Darabont and King have done it again with The Green Mile. The same magic that flowed through their previous movie together (The Shawshank Redemption) is alive and well in this movie. This has to be the best adaptation from a Stephen King novel ever done.

I thought the casting choices were excellent, especially that of Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey. The role required a HUGE black man who could act. Duncan is a perfect fit.

This is one of the best movies I've seen in the past few years. Some people will be put off by the long running time (roughly 3 hrs and 8 minutes), but they would be missing a deeply touching story. Now, I'm not saying the movie is better than the book, because it is not, but I don't think a movie could have done any more justice to the novel than this one did.

I know I'm gushing about the movie, but why just 4 stars and not five? Because of the DVD. The image quality is excellent, as is the sound. My problem is the extras included, or rather, the lack of extras. All we get is a trailer (a very good one though) and an 8 minute behind the scenes documentary (another nice one). Other than these and a cast list, we get nothing. I would love to have heard a commentary with Darabont and King, or perhaps with the actors. What about deleted scenes (one scene shown in the documentary isn't in the film)? Unfortunately Warner Brothers didn't feel the need to use the maximum potential of this DVD. Thus the 4 stars.

Overall: If you're a fan of Stephen King, Darabont, Hanks, or Duncan you owe it to yourself to pick up this movie. If you don't fall into this category, give the movie a shot. It will be worth your time.

Summary: Bring lots of hankies
Review: How could anyone not see and love "The Green Mile"I bought it on DVD just on the strength of the book. Stephen King is the master. The movie followed the book closely, even though I didn't cry when I read the book, the movie was so well acted and directed you actually felt the main charcters emotion thru-out the movie. Bravo to Mr. Hanks, Mr.Pepper,Mr. Morse and Mr. Duncan on jobs well done. If and when you see this remember to bring lots of hankies, the rest you must see for yourself.

Summary: Stephen King at his best!
Review: This movie is really worth buying. It is really deep and will touch your heart. I didn't expect a "Stephen King" movie to be like this at all. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it.

Summary: A Rollercoaster of Emotions
Review: I can only say that this is perhaps the finest movie I have seen in years. It is funny, sad, tender and shocking (no pun intended). Hanks, as usual is superb and his supporting cast doesn't fail him. Yes, it is a long movie, but it doesn't drag anywhere. I was spelbound throughout and time never entered into the equation. You owe it to yourself to see this presentation. The DVD is great and if you don't have a player already, you need to get one. THE GREEN MILE should be your christening movie.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: It is truely one of Tom Hank's greatest movies. Ever since Philadelphia, he has starred in great movies. This one is by far the best since then.

Summary: Excellent Movie
Review: I love to watch movies and am very picky about having a favorite. I just saw the movie yesterday (June 12, 2000) on DVD and was not looking forward to sitting for 3 hours to watch a movie about prison. Boy was I mistaken! This movie was excellent from the get-go.

To my surprise the movie did not drag or bore me the entire time, but kept me interested the whole time with its mixture of stories. I highly recommend this film and promise you will recommend it to others as I am now.

The prison guard Percy will get on your nerves but don't worry He will get what he deserves in the end but I will not tell you what happens of course.

Enjoy!

Summary: Beautiful, touching, strong.
Review: Absolutely wonderful filmmaking. If you liked "The Shawshank Redemption", this will be another one of your favorites for certain. Seriously overlooked at this year's Oscars, "The Green Mile" is absolutely one of the best films of 1999 and possibly of the decade. Strong performances all around including that of Mr. Jingles! Moody cinematography, strong cast, powerful message. Five stars!
