Review: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER IS THE SAD STORY OF TITANIC.YOU MAY ASK WHY TO BUY THIS INSTEAD OF CAMERON'S FILM..QUITE EASY;FIRST THERE ARE NO FICTIONAL THINGS IN THIS MOVIE AND SECOND IT HAS A GREAT COMMENTARY WITH TWO TITANIC EXPERTS TO COMPARE THE MOVIE WITH THE REAL EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE ON THE SHIP.BESIDES IT IS VERY INFORMATIVE.NO DOUBT IT IS A GREAT BUY FOR THE ONES WHO WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE TITANIC OR FOR MOVIE BUFFS.

Summary: BOAT PEOPLE
Review: Directed by Roy Baker, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER has the standard quality we are accustomed to expect from a Rank production. Great actors for every characters, a screenplay without weakness or surprise and professional cinematography. It's the perfect DVD for a rainy saturday night. But I doubt that you will see this movie again and again with an everlasting pleasure. The british point of view over the Titanic catastroph has the charm of the Victorian glorious past of this nation. Slightly ridiculous but so admirable. The mood of this movie can be felt in this sentence of one of the british passenger : " My wife would be so disappointed if she heard that my conduct wasn't the conduct of a gentleman at the moment of my death ". We sincerely hope that the poor woman has been able to have the confirmation of the perfect attitude of his husband in front of the Atlantic's frozen rains. Naturally, everything was filmed in studio, so the Atlantic Ocean is very Lake Tahoe-like and doesn't seem so mean after all. Same remark for the deadly iceberg that we have the chance to admire during 3,056 seconds. No, the sole interest of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is the study, from a british point of view, of the ideal attitude to adopt in front of an upcoming death. A didactic Titanic DVD.

Summary: Finally Getting the Recognition it always deserved.
Review: As one who has had an active interest in all matters maritime for many years, I must say that this movie is perhaps one of the most under rated of all time. Historically based on the Walter Lord book,the movie follows the book with jaw dropping accuracy. In hindsight, however, it does depict the captain of the "Californian" in a light which has now been proved incorrect. Captain Lord was finally exonerated about 20 years ago, in fact there was no evidence that the ship on the horizon was in fact the "Californian" The only other technical fault was the non- breaking up of the ship as she sank, we now know for sure this is in fact what happened, no vessel of such size could possibly remain intact with such a huge unsupported section out of the water. In sharp contrast, James Camerons 'Titanic' has more holes in it than the ship itself. (other reviewers have covered this sufficiently) This movie captures all the drama, pathos, tragedy and irony of the event.....without the 'Jack & Rose' story. The most chilling moment is the extraordinary shot of Bruce Ismay, Chairman of 'White Star'Line, with the vessel's stern precariously elevated in the background.It is one of the most poignant and dramatic moments in motion picture history. The actions of the officers onboard reflect the strict tradititions of the Merchant Marine...(and I should know) And as for Captain Rostron on the 'Carpathia', he simply did what is expected of any ship's captain when faced with a vessel in distress. Finally, the transfer to DVD is good but not brilliant. For the price of the 'Criterion Collection' it could have been better. Minor criticisms for an otherwise masterpiece of a movie. Finally, on April 14, 2012, many of us will reach for a 'Titanic' movie to recall the events of 100 years ago. I'll run this one.....then "Titanic" just to see Ms Stanwyks gowns, and Clifton Webbs' noble largesse. As for the Cameron movie......I won't even bother.

Summary: THE REAL "TITANIC" STORY.
Review: This movie is superior to Cameron's "Titanic" because:(1)It concerns real people and does not concentrate for two hours on unbelievable fictional characters.(2)It shows us in-depth portraits of Molly Brown,the Strausses,Guggenheim, Captain Smith, and many officers and crew. The Cameron film merely touches on these valiant people, and in some cases eliminates them entirely!(3)The sinking itself is shown in more intimate detail.There is a true feeling of panic and of heroism which permeates this part of the movie.This film is moving, heart-rending, and REAL.

Summary: Disappointed
Review: This movie still remains the best Titanic flick made.James Cameron's Titanic recreated the ship historically but did not recreate the panic or human drama as much as this movie. I was disappointed with Criterion's version of this movie. The picture was no better than VHS. The sound...MONO....What gives? With many classics of this era being brillantly transformed by DVD, this one is ordinary and does not deserve the price requested. The audio commentary by Lynch and Marshall is also outdated.

Summary: Terrifyingly real, hauntingly sad
Review: The first time I saw this film, I was stunned by the realism of it--the actors, many of them unfamiliar to me--seemed more like faces in a beautiful documentary than the great actors they obviously were. This is as powerful as historical dramas will ever get and I can't recommend it highly enough. I watch it whenever I want to remind myself how to behave in the face of adversity. I'd like to think I could be half as brave and dignified in the face of death as many aboard The Ttianic were.

Review: Even when taking into consideration James Cameron's decent but vastly overrated 'Titanic', 'A Night to Remember' still ranks as the definitive screen version of the often filmed historical event. Brillantly adapting Walter Lord's well-researched book, Eric Ambler provides us with a riveting script in his straightforward telling of the various events that happened before and after the mighty ship struck the iceberg. A talented British cast works wonders in displaying the emotional turmoil, panic, and heroism that occured that night. If you REALLY want to experience a great motion picture ABOUT the Titanic and not about Leonardo DiCaprio, then add this wonderful DVD to your collection.

Summary: Everytime I watch it I am captivated
Review: I can't say enough about this film. I watch the video. I watch it when it is on AMC. I watch it cut up by comercials. The whole approach to the movie is superb. No flaymboyent characters. No extra poetic license. To believe that a story like this needs embelishment is crazy. The ship, the tragedy, the irony are the story. This movie captures all of this and more. True human drama captured on film. Made me read the book which is even a better story! Even provides some triva with the presence of "Q" from the Bond films, and the Beatles' manager from "Hard Day's Night" having small roles. Very enjoyable movie that is easy to watch again and again.

Summary: Straightforward, fascinating look at the Titanic tragedy
Review: Since I'm not much of a soap-opera fan, I prefer this version of the Titanic story to the 1997 release starring DiCaprio. Although ANTR does have a few historical inaccuracies and doesn't have the incredible special effects of Cameron's version, it's a better overall film. ANTR is more serious, and it doesn't have fictional characters muddling up the story. Rather it deals with the tragic events in a documentary style that is fast-paced and quite interesting.
