Summary: SOMETHING ELSE
Review: Limbo is a fascinating movie - no Hollywood stuff, but independent film-making of very high quality. Most of all I like the two main characters played be David Strathairn and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. The way they get to know each other is very tender, very convincing, and also funny at times. I particularly like the scene in the bar when she comes to his table after singing a song, and they start revealing little bits about themselves to each other - that's fascinating acting, and fascinating dialogue too.
As for the much-disputed ending - oh well, I don't want to give away too much, but director/writer/editor John Sayles says in his DVD commentary (highly recommended) that it was the only ending that seemed appropriate to him, and maybe he's right...

Summary: Wow. Amazing in every possible way.
Review: I simply must take issue with the previous reviews. "Limbo" is a fantastic film. It is truly absorbing for the very reason that other people who are more used to, or hoping for, some kind of action-filled cliche movie would have preferred. You can't go into this movie wanting another typical lame Hollywood ending movie. Sayles' movies aren't that way. Yet neither are they boring--far from it! "Limbo" is about the lives of the characters. The key is to realize that by watching this particular film you are specifically watching a series of events in their lives go into inexorable motion, and then watching the consequences. The events themselves are quite simple on the surface...hence again, why some may call this boring as there are no cartoon characters, jet fighters, aliens, robots, explosions and the like to segue into the next scene. The scenes of the marooned group reading the diary they found in the ruins of their shelter are stunning. And as for the ending, well, (don't worry, no giveaways here! ) how else could it have ended? Anything else would have been another stupid Hollywood ending that leaves nothing to the imagination. And also, ponder the title itself. You think about this movie after you leave the theater, after you turn off the TV, you discuss it with friends. That's what good movies do...make you keep talking about them after the credits roll. If you want to see a truly original movie that will stay with you for a long time, get "Limbo." Whew. Thanks!

Summary: Limbo is an unexpected delight!
Review: "Limbo" is an excellent film. I have only seen one other film by Sayles, "Lone Star." I liked "Lone Star", but the ending of that film creeped me out. Otherwise I felt it was a good movie. So it was with some fear that I decided to see "Limbo."

I'm not sure what viewers who loved "Lone Star" would say about "Limbo." I really enjoyed "Limbo." The actors portrayed the characters well. David Strathairn plays the role of Joe Gastineau well. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is fantastic in the role of Donna De Angelo. The young woman who plays Noelle De Angelo, Vanessa Martinez, is incredible.

The movie is character-driven as opposed to plot/action-driven. Expect the style of filmmaking to be more Northern Exposure than ER. We really get to know the characters in this film either by default or through direct contact. The way in which the stories of the characters are woven together is intricate-evidenced by a scene in which several conversations at a bar are occurring at the same time.

The end of the movie, which I will not reveal, is somewhat unexpected and may make some viewers upset. Viewers should keep the title of the movie in mind while watching the film and the end will seem perfect.

One of my pet peeves in movie watching is seeing a film that has a terrible ending. Limbo has a perfect one. The last 30 or so minutes of the movie are the best in the film and need to be seen again. I give this movie two thumbs up and recommend it to those who enjoy seeing excellent acting!

Summary: Unconventional = Good!
Review: I watched this movie on DVD earlier today, and I have five words of caution to anyone who found themselves as drawn to this film as I was: "view at your own risk." Obviously by my five-star rating I found this to be an excellent film. But if you think that this is a standard thriller with standard characters, dialogue, and *ENDING* (I cannot emphasize enough how unexpected and downright daring the ending to this movie is), then you may want to shy away from "Limbo." The characters in this movie are richly and realistically developed, and the focus is on them rather than on the plot twists and jump scenes that this film could have easily employed. Of course, doing that would have reduced this to being an average suspense film, and I really would not even use those words to describe this picture. I have read reviews posted by earlier viewers that have lamented over the film's massively unexpected and slightly annoying finale. After listening to Sayles' commentary track, the ending makes more sense than either of the other, more predictable options. It's an ending that is completely consistent with the theme, tone, and focus of the film, and to have closed "Limbo" with anything else would take away from that. It's the way the movie should end. It's not what you expect, but isn't it time that Hollywood stop giving us the endings that we expect to happen and instead give us some real stories?

Summary: ?????
Review: Dumb ass ending to an otherwise ok movie. Actually, I take that back, the part about it being an ok movie. The only thing that kept me watching was to see whether or not they made it back home safely, only to have that snatched away by a smart-aleck writer who is probably still chuckling about his little prank. I couldn't believe I sat and watched the whole thing just to be tricked with NO ENDING. Cheap Trick! The entire movie seems like some new kind of "fill-in-the-blanks" project, with a plot that goes absolutely nowhere. The only good thing this movie did for me was inspire me to write my first review.
Acting - average
Plot - non-existant
Ending - HUGE let down
Overall - very dissapointing

Summary: Refreshing Change
Review: If you're bored with the typical H'wood pap, you'll probably enjoy this film. It's gritty, realistic and the ending will give you something to think about for awhile. I thought it was excellent, but don't watch it if you need special effects, Kung Fu, auto chases/explosions, shoot-outs, cleavage or big gaping grins and big square teeth.

Summary: Nearly picture perfect!
Review: Having been a Sayles fan for years now, I unfortunately missed this one when it first came out and only caught up with it this past weekend. And, having been somewhat disappointed by the great man's latest film "Sunshine State", I really didn't know what to expect of "Limbo".

Well, I needn't have worried, 'cause it's an absolute delight nearly all the way! Admittedly a little slow at times, the latter half of the film, though, is one of the best bits of moviemaking you're likely to see nowadays. And no matter what (some) people might try to tell ya; the ending is breathtakingly and unforgettably perfect.

In short; "Limbo" is a rare delight in these trying times of mostly cinematic rubbish.
