Summary: Nearly picture perfect!
Review: Having been a Sayles fan for years now, I unfortunately missed this one when it first came out and only caught up with it this past weekend. And, having been somewhat disappointed by the great man's latest film "Sunshine State", I really didn't know what to expect of "Limbo".

Well, I needn't have worried, 'cause it's an absolute delight nearly all the way! Admittedly a little slow at times, the latter half of the film, though, is one of the best bits of moviemaking you're likely to see nowadays. And no matter what (some) people might try to tell ya; the ending is breathtakingly and unforgettably perfect.

In short; "Limbo" is a rare delight in these trying times of mostly cinematic rubbish.

Summary: ending? What ending?
Review: I just caught the end of the movie(10-15 minutes) and HAD decided to rent the whole thing....then the ending. Now, I'm in Japan and watching it on Japanese television and was wondering if maybe they cut it off or not...but after reading the revies, I didn't miss a thing....was thinking about renting it, but maybe not now...

Summary: Okay except for the cheesy ending
Review: As there are plenty of good reviews here already of this movie, which I mostly enjoyed, I won't add much to them except for one comment about--guess what--the ending.

As I said, I liked this movie, sort of, except for the not-too-suprisingly controversial ending. Some people really liked it, but come on folks--the ending was truly cheesy--a cheap trick that even a pulp-fiction hack of a writer would have been embarassed to employ, especially since it comes from veteran movie maker John Sayles.

I'm not going to speculate on how the ending came to be, except that maybe Sayles couldn't decide whether the Kristopherson character would bring back help or the bad guys, and decided on just letting it hang instead. Maybe when you get to be an influential director like Sayles you can pull gaffs like these and people just think you're being profound.

Well, the Limbo title appropriately describes not only the ending and the lurch in which Sayles leaves the audience, but also the aesthetic limbo Sayles himself needs to un-mire himself from.

Other than that, it's an okay flick, despite the almost but not quite fatal flaw of the ending.

Summary: Notch another one up for Sayles
Review: Limbo people. The title is Limbo.

Summary: Well, don't bother...
Review: Although this movie held my interest, it had a horrible ending. I understand it was 'Limbo', The acting was good! ... But to go through a movie and not have a clue to the ending... BAD!!!... Most movies have the couple kiss, then wonder if they get married, etc. Or, the killer ends up alive, when you think they are dead. But this was a total shut out from the directors. Aweful... I am a movie freak, I know what I am taking about... but this was a good movie, until they pulled that 'shut out' at the end. When you have no idea where to end a movie, take some more classes. You're not that good of a director.

Summary: Another top notch work from John Sayles
Review: A fine follow up to his masterpiece "Men With Guns." In "Limbo" you are immersed into this world and these characters. John Sayles is a TRUE independent filmmaker in a world of wannabes. You don't know what to expect from this film, all the way up to the daring ending. You won't soon forget these characters and their story.

Summary: This could have been a five-star movie
Review: This movie started out so good. The writing is impeccable. In deft, subtle strokes, you discover the issues and problems of several characters. You feel you know them well, in just a few lines of dialogue.

But then part 2 comes along. One character takes his lover and her daughter on his brother's boat. The brother is killed, and the three others are stranded on an island, unsure of whether the killers will come back. While the premise is nothing new, it is presented well, through a series of vignettes that increase tension.

So, why do I give this one star? Sayles uses the cheapest cop-out ending for this movie. As the characters await the arrival of an airplane, which could contain either the killers or their rescuers, he cuts to credits. This is such a cop-out - only bad writers use this kind of ending that resolves nothing. If Sayles had the courage to say what his characters become, then this would have been a great movie. But he didn't, and it is an immense disappointment.g

Summary: LIMBO is where this movie belongs to !!!
Review: Terrible picture. Bad acting (Mastrantonio singing is something unbeliavable, so bad it is), slow direction, no climax, absurd ending (or lack of it!). An indulgent film all the way, you sense the director is sure he is doing a masterpiece with low budget, but he is not! Strathairn saves himself, the rest is bad, man, really bad.
