Summary: A hidden tresure
Review: I consider myself a true lover of quality film in general and one of my favorite genre is the "ganster" films. I'm talking from the early days of Cagne and Edward G Robinson to the Sopranos.
However, the true high quality films are so full of substance that the term "gangster" does not do them justice.
"Once Upon a Time in America" ranks in the top three of my list of favorite movies period. (the other two being Miller' Crossing and The Godfather II). In fact, I use this movie as a "litmus test" to see if a person can "walk the walk" as far as being movie fan. Like the password at a speakeasy's door; if you get it, you're in and if you don't, I'll gladly enlighten you. Everyone that I've turned on to this movie is captivated by it and asked, "where has this been hiding "
I understand that some people are put off by long movies. But once you get into the charecters and plot, length is not an issue. The time will fly because you want to know more.
What I don't understand is why this fantastic film is not on DVD yet. Who do I have to write, call or e-mail?
Tell me,... 'cause I promise ya, I'll do it!!!

Summary: So when will Paramount release the DVD?
Review: This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and it is unforgettable once seen. Since Paramount owns the rights to it, when will a DVD version be released? It is unfortunate that there won't be a commentary track with Sergio Leone's words when it is finally released, but wouldn't it be wonderful if DeNiro and Woods provide some commentary? If you search the 'net, there are several DVD versions available out there, including a Brazilian one, but who knows if they're legit? I wonder if the Italian public can get this in DVD format in Italy... This is one movie I'd love in DVD collector's edition format. Since the magnificent soundtrack was re-released not long ago, and with extra tracks and never-used music, isn't a DVD release the next logical step? There were several scenes (the kids in a brothel) that were cut from the final film.
If you haven't seen this film, rent it and watch it, and stay clear of the American cut!

Summary: Quite Possibly The Greatest Film Ever Made
Review: Now, I am by no means a Sergio Leone fan, but he deserved the Oscar for Direction for this film. I firmly believe that this film stands up there with "The Godfather, Part II", "Casablanca", and "Citizen Kane" as one of the greatest films ever released (maybe the best). Sergio Leone's violent, visual, masterpiece of turn of the century Jewish boys from New York growing into a life of crime has a different effect on all those who have viewed it in its various forms. I, personally have never seen the shortened version so I can not comment on it. There isn't anything in this film that isn't worth the four hour running time. Brilliant, poetic visuals, great photography and fantastic performances across the board.

Leone touches on issues of violence (the scenes are gory and sometimes explicit), sexual depravity (its no coincidence that all sexual encounters are in unconventional places and only in Noodles' rape of Deborah does he exhibit any kind of emotion toward any of his partners, gently caressing and kissing her as he violates her in a pathetic attempt to show his love), and simply growing old (brought about by the reminisces of Noodles' childhood with a beautiful good 'ol days type feeling despite the criminal nature of his childhood) and leaves us clamoring for more after the four hours are through.

Robert DeNiro is fantastic as always as Noodles. But it is James Woods, in my opinion that steals the show as Max. William Forsythe, Treat Williams, Danny Aiello, Burt Young, Joe Pesci, Jennifer Connely and Tuesday Weld add to this film just as actors of their quality are expected to. Their performances, as well as the two leads at the very least deserved, but didn't recieve any, Academy Award nominations. (In fact, the Oscars were the only ceremony to snub this film). Ennio Morricone's score was as beautiful and evocative as one would expect from the master of the Italian score.

Worth seeing. Sit back, take the phone off the hook and prepare for a cinematic experience.

Summary: THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME
Review: A movie that I've seen again and again.
Best gangster movie in my opinion.
Music (soundtrack) is also worth getting.
I'm hoping to obtain it on DVD...

Summary: Great movie - lousy tape transfer
Review: I don't claim that ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA is the greatest film ever made but the fact is I enjoy watching it more than any other. I have loved it for years and it seems to improve every time I watch it.
I have a PAL version released many years ago in Australia (full length) but I thought I would buy the American release for improved quality. Boy did I get it wrong! The colour balance in the NTSC version currently on offer is ghastly; a green cast over everything and no sign of red anywhere. My 20 year old tape is far better (although the sound isn't as good). My advice is to wait for the DVD release which is said to be on the cards.

Summary: Better than The Godfather films
Review: Probably the best gangster movie ever made - yes even better than the Godfather movies (and it hasn't been released on DVD yet; what a travesty)! Robert DeNiro and James Woods are both wonderful as are the other actors. It has an excellent (although admittedly very slow moving) plot and has a real mystery to it (unlike the Godfather movies where the only mysteries are when and who is going to get shot). The ending is surburb. It also has a haunting musical score. The movie needs to be seen in its full, unedited (4 hour version).

Summary: THIS IS A 'MUST' SEE MOVIE, WATCH THE FULL LENGHT MOVIE
Review: I have seen this movie, 20 times, I am going to buy it once it is available on DVD. The acting in this movie is unbelievable, the actors who play the young stars and than the stars themselves
make this a must see movie. ** There is a shorter version of this movie but as Robert DeNiro or James Woods said, "Do NOT be a (something) you have to watch the full length version or do not bother!!" Also the more you watch this movie the more you seem to find things that just pass you buy. This is a MUST see
and MUST purchase movie.

Summary: READ MY REVIEW VERY TRUE AND PRECISE!excellent film!
Review: This film is one of the best i have seen in all my years of living!
The performances are out of this world with the great Robert De Niro taking the lead role.
The costumes and set up of scenery are stunning and the story is one that has and will touch many peoples hearts for years to come. This is one film that will never cease to amaze- this brilliant story of friendship during the prohibitation era makes you think and the continous flashbacks going over period of four decades gives the best impact on the viewer to understanding the characters and the harsh times they have gone through.
The music score is fantastic and I recommend to anyone who hasn't seen this film should see it without a doubt!ENJOY
