Summary: Brilliant - a true classic!
Review: Such a touching story of bitter sweet struggles and the human condition. I like to watch it from time to time because I pick up so much more each time: humor, wit, sadness, and the whole array of the human condition. Norman Jewison is brilliant, the songs are touching, and very special. A movie you would never get bored with no matter how many times you watch it.

Summary: Don't fiddle around--buy this movie
Review: The true story how the Jews were exiled from Russia during the time of the Tsars. Watch the long suffering Tevye (Topol) struggle through life in Russia with his nagging wife Golde. Highly dramatic scenes, like Chava's departure from the Jewish faith to marry a Russian Orthodox man. Brilliant vocals, excellent music adapted by John (Star Wars) Williams. Violin solos by the late Isaac Stern. A real tear jerker.

Summary: Fabulous
Review: Topol shines as Tevye in the phenomenal musical that follows his life. You'll laugh and cry and sing along (at least you'll sing along after you have seen it as many times as I have). It is quite long, which may discourage some, but it is worth it. The music is fabulous.

Summary: The best
Review: This is the most beautiful movie I ever saw. Since I was 9 years old until now (14 years later) I've been watching it, and I never be tired of watching it. The songs are great and the playing list is excellent. You can't miss it.

Summary: Fantastic music. Fantastic movie.
Review: "Fiddler on the Roof" is easily one of the best movies/musicals ever created. It is the movie version of the stage musical. Tevye (Topol, Oscar-nominated), a poor Jewish milkman, lives with his wife, Golde (Norma Crane), and his five daughters, one is, the oldest one, Tzeitel, in the small town of Anatevka in pre-Revolutionary Russia. I love to sing along with those wonderful songs in the film. I have this movie on DVD and I am glad to own it.

Summary: A Classic
Review: I'd recommend this DVD to anybody. If you haven't seen Fiddler on the Roof, or haven't seen it in awhile. This is the DVD for you. The songs are as good as they ever were. We purchased this recently and my 9 and 13 year old daughters are running around the house singing "Matchmaker" and "Miracle of Miracles" all of the time. We are not Jewish, but they actually both expressed an interest in learning more about Judiasm as a result of seeing this movie - very healthy for a young mind to wonder about other cultures! A strong recommendation to put this in your library!

Summary: A simply wonderful film
Review: For years I have put off watching this movie because I am not a fan of musicals. After watching this, I cannot believe I waited so long. There are musical numbers, memorable ones, but there is a truly engaging story also.

The smaller-scale story is about a traditional Jewish father who is struggling to get by in the world. He explains the meaning of the fiddler on the roof early on and likens it to his survival. Topol gives us a great performance as we see his traditional ways tested with the marriages of some of his daughters.

The larger-scale story is about the changing face of Russia. Pogroms are moving people around or away, and this movie shows the effects on a village. I found it very informative.

OK, the music will stick with you. Even though I am not much of a fan of musicals, I find myself humming "Sunrise, Sunset," and I can still hear the daughters singing of the matchmaker. I music of Isaac Stern will stay with you also.

I would highly recommend seeing this movie.

Summary: "Life Has A Way Of Confusing Us, Blessing And Bruising Us"
Review: This review refers to the MGM/UA VHS...
"Fiddler On The Roof" is truely a story of the human spirit, traditions, and values, told in this wonderfully touching and brillant musical. It will have you smiling one minute and all choked up the next. You'll be wanting to sing aloud the musical numbers, and you won't want it to end. It will stay with you for a long time, and you'll watch it again and again.

"Tradition" and faith are the main ingrediants that keeps the poor Jewish people in the little Russian village of Anatevka from giving up.Tevya is one of those people. He must try to provide for his family("If I Were A Rich Man"), face the changing world as his daughters come of age and marry against tradition, and hold up against the opression he and his fellow townspeople face from the Czar during early 1900's.He speaks to God, mostly through song, as he has us laughing and crying at the same time.

Some of the wonderful traditions, and colorful characters you'll encounter during this story are told beautifully through the music. There's Yentle the Matchmaker("Matchmaker,Matchmaker"), the beautiful Sabboth ceremonies, the weddings("Sunrise, Sunset"),the gatherings of the learned men, and of course The Fiddler, symbol of all the traditions, ever present as a reminder, when Tevya must bend in his ways. There are also the trials the people must endure. First in the way of "demonstrations", on orders from the Czar, and finally in the evicitons of all the Jews from their homes("Anatevka"). They bear up and go on with life. It is powerfully touching.

The film is a masterpeice of storytelling in every way. Here's a few names connected to this film...It's a Norman Jewison Film(Produced and Directed), Choreographed by Jerome Robbins. Music by Jerry Bock, Conducted by John Williams, and starring Topal, Norma Crane, Molly Picon, Leonard Frey, and Paul Glaser. Oh and the fiddler's music was done by none other than violinst Isaac Stern.

The VHS has a nice quality picture and is presented in Dolby Surround Hi-FI.

There are so many wonderful songs. If I had to pick one line from one song to sum up this moving masterpiece it would be the line from "To Life"...."Life has a way of confusing us, blessing and bruising us...TO LIFE!".........Laurie

Summary: Excellent!
Review: Everything about this movie, one of my long-time favorites, is quality - script, actors, sets, score. The special features on the DVD let us see into the making of it and the pains that were taken to make Fiddler on the Roof the wonderful production it is. Even if you think you don't like musicals, you would probably like this; it has comedy, drama, tragedy, lovable charaters, and great music.
