Review: Why can't every musical end with David Hasselhoff throwing a high kick ?

Summary: Defending David
Review: As a self-proclaimed musical buff, Jekyll is by far one of my favorite shows. It combines the wonders of a classic novel with show-stopping broadway musical numbers. When Jekyll first came to Broadway, I was thrilled because the Concepts album was so fabulous. I saw it in it's first year in NYC. Admittedly, David Hasselhoff may not compare to some Broadway professionals, I found his performance refreshing. He brought "A New Life" to the role. He may have had some vocalistic problems, but this can be expected. Has anyone ever heard of being nervous?????? This was his opening night. I feel that he did a wonderful job, when considering his musical background. If anyone has seen the PPV version, they could have seen the tremendous amount of work and physical hardships he had to go through to prepare for the run of the show. He did a wonderful job, and I feel that he should be applauded. Also, Coleen Sexton is my next defense. A friend saw the show on Broadway with her and Mr. Hasselhoff. He told me that she was only 19 years old. If this is true, to even attempt to compare her to Linda Eder (my personal hero) is doing her a great injustice. Even if she is not 19, her talent will take her far, and she will be a Broadway success. She has extremely commedable talent. Her portrayal of Lucy is innocent, yet sensual. I feel that she and Mr. Hasselhoff had great sexual chemistry while portraying their characters. One more thing, concerning the absence of songs such as "Bring on the Men" and "Letting Go". Wildhorn/Bricusse wrote over 60 songs for this show. Only so many can be in the actual production. While "Bring on the Men" is a great crowd pleaser for the tour, "Good and Evil" is actually more suited for the show, if attention is paid to the lyrics. As for the characters that Hyde kills, and someone commenting on not knowing who they were, they were the Board of Governors of St. Jude's Hospital. Lady Beaconsfield, Sir Archibald Proops, Lord Glossip, the Bishop of Basingstoke, and Lord Savage were the persons killed by Hyde. He was revenging the fact that they would not even consider Dr. Jekyll's proposal for his experiment. I just wanted to clarify that point. Otherwise, the show is superb (still a favorite, no matter who plays Jekyll), the VHS is great, and the Concepts album is still a classic in my eyes.

Summary: In favour of Mr. Hasselhoff
Review: Having only seen the show in Germany, I was very curious about the Broadway production. The fact that they filmed the actual stage production thrilled me. When I heard who was playing the lead though, my jaw dropped in disbelieve. To my surprise, Mr. Hasselhoff did a fairly good job, especialy his Hyde is worth seeing. Sure, in some scenes, his voice doesn't live up to the ones of trained singers, but he does a good job nevertheless. He overacts sometimes, but that is something others do as well. The show itself has some very weak points itself, but the cast does the best within their limits. The DVD is worth having, both sound and picture quality are superb, and it's great to watch.

Summary: Ruined, I say, Ruined!
Review: I bought the Jekyll and Hyde CD long before I saw the show. The original cast was outstanding, and I saw it two more times on Broadway. I also saw it on tour with Chuck Wagner in the lead role. It's not the best Broadway show ever, but it is good entertainment.

But there's just no escaping the damage David Hasselhoff does to this piece of theater. He's horrid. Oh, his voice is passable, but his Jekyll never quite manages to shake that dear-in-the-headlights-with-the-makeup-of-a-ventriloquist's-dummy look. And his Hyde looks like he's doing a deranged Marty Feldman impersonation. "This is the Moment" is stripped of any value as he rushes through the lyrics and walks as though there's a foreign object in his trousers.

The rest of the cast is stellar, which is the only reason this production deserves any stars at all. It's worth watching in a "Plan 9 From Outer Space" kind of way, but unless you're a BIG fan of Jekyll and Hyde, or of Baywatch, don't bother.

Summary: Try to ignore Hasslehoff
Review: With the exception of David Hasselhoff, the cast is amazing. Colleen Sexton is an incredible Lucy. I am a huge Christiane Noll fan and was initally disapointed that she wasn't on the DVD, but the woman playing Lisa...er I mean Emma does a fantastic job. If you only get it to see them perform "In His Eyes", it would be worthwhile.

Summary: Didn't live up to expectations
Review: I was fortunate to see the original cast (with the exception, to my disappointment, of Linda Eder) in New York, and I sincerely wish that they'd have brought Ms. Eder, and Robert Cucciolli back for the taping of the show. Overall, I enjoyed the DVD. I think the cast was excellent, with the exception of David Hasslehoff in the title role. While I was expecting much worse, he just doesn't have the stage presence, voice, or acting capabilities required for the role. "This is the Moment" was painful, and "Confrontation" was very week, and actually rather amusing. The role requires someone with a great deal more training than "Baywatch" and "Knight Rider" could provide. (the old joke about a wet paper bag applies) As for the rest of the cast, they were wonderful. No complaints. (My rating would have been 1 or 0 stars if not for the rest of the cast)I would have loved to see Linda Eder and Christiane Noll return for it, but both Emma and Lucy were quite capable of filling the roles. Too bad their performances were tainted for me by the weak voice and poor acting of David Hasslehoff.

Summary: So sad. Hasselhoff ruins the whole show!
Review: I've had the original Warlow/Eder CD's for some time and was thrilled when I found out I'd finally be able to see the show. It was horrible. I returned it immediately and am trying to forget I ever saw it. Hasselhoff is no match for Warlow. He's not even competent. He can't sing, and isn't even trying to act. If you're a fan of Hasselhoff, you "might" like it, but if you're a fan of "Jekyll & Hyde," stay away!! This DVD will only upset you.

Summary: SEXTON GIVES J&H "A NEW LIFE"
Review: I just got this production last week. I am absolutely amazed! First off, David Hasselhoff is not bad in this role, he just isn't right for it. (He is very unprofessional in this production and to quote a phrase "shows a remarkable lack of style" at the end when he comes and talks to the audience following the curtain call. How unprofessional can one person be? It was really my biggest turn off as far as he is concerned.) All toll, he IS NOT THE STAR. I think that that distinction needs to go to Coleen Sexton.

Ms. Sexton breathes new life into the role made famous by Linda Eder, and although I will always consider Eder the Lucy to beat them all, Coleen brings to the role an innocent and sweet quality that I think were missing with the original actress.

Her renditions of Good 'n Evil, Someone Like You, In His Eyes, and of course A New Life are beyond description. Sexton really gets into every word that she sings and her performance makes the purchase of this video worthwhile by any standard.

Secondly I must also comment on Andrea Rivette. What a wonderful actress! I must say that her voice is incredible! She is the best singer/actress that I have heard sing the part of Emma. Don't get me wrong, Carolee Carmello and Christiane Noll are wonderful to listen to, but the decision to cast Rivette as Emma was the right one. After having to recast the role so many times, the producers finally got someone who was just right for the role.

Summary: Defence for Mr Hasslehoof.
Review: To the point - After reading most of Amazon's unfavorable reviews of Jekyll and Hyde, I decide to buy a copy and judge for myself. Even though I am not a Hasselhoff fan, I must admit his performance is not bad at all. As for his singing I think he does all right. In fact, he does very well for all the songs. There is only one exception: the spine tinkling forever-classic
song, 'This is The Moment,' during which Hasselhoof is disappointing. This is a pity for most people will judge him on that number alone. The score by Leslie Bricusse and Frank Wildhorn is beyond words. I am so grateful that this DVD has been filmed so that less unfortunate audiences outside of the US will have a chance to see how wonderful this production is. As for the cynicals: if you were the investors, I am sure you would do the same and bank on Hasslehoof's name. To be honest, I really think he has proven that he can do it. I only wish he stopped reminding us about Bay Watch and move on.

Summary: Why David Hasselhoff???
Review: To bad that they chose to record David Hasselhoff in this production. After seeing the show on Broadway and in a touring production, I couldn't wait to get this recording. It's hard to believe but he single handedly ruined the entire production. His comments about coming a long way from a talking car to Jekyll & Hyde weren't exavtly true. KITT could have done a much better job!!!
