Rating: Summary: A "must have" for John Pizzarelli fans! Review: "Live in Montreal" should be part of any Pizzarelli afficionado's collection. This concert was filmed during the 1992 Montreal Jazz Festival at the Club Soda, and the sound and picture quality of the DVD is excellent. Seeing the John Pizzarelli Trio perform with a big band is a real treat. The Trio also does a few numbers on their own, without the band joining in. There are some wonderful instrumentals in this concert, including Honeysuckle Rose, a beautiful original Pizzarelli composition called Roslyn, and a show-stopping Sing Sing Sing. Other songs run the gamut from old standards such as Lady Be Good and My Blue Heaven, to a comic I'm Hip. See the rundown of complete songs on this site. (Note that former Trio member Ken Levinsky is on piano in this DVD, not the current Trio pianist, Ray Kennedy.) John's guitar playing is amazing; must be in the genes, he's the son of legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. Along with the performances, there are behind the scenes video of John, the trio, and the Pizzarelli family. John is a great performer to watch (and listen to); he exudes charm and his warmth and personality shine through. And there's no better voice around. If you see the John Pizzarelli Trio scheduled to perform in your neck of the woods, run, don't walk, to buy a ticket! This DVD is 50 minutes long, and 50 minutes never went by so fast! Buy in bulk!

Rating: Summary: Famous relatives help Review: As part of a personal project to canvass current jazz guitarist/vocalists, I bought this DVD because of my long admiration for the artist's father--and on the strength of a previous positive review here. I wish I hadn't.To my mind, JP has at best a schoolboy voice dressed up with a few lounge singer tricks. His guitar playing is technically proficient but musically uninteresting, unoriginal, and soulless. Ten thousand rightly-unheralded guitarists around the country play at least as well.
