Summary: I'd krall through broken glass to see Diana in concert!
Review: I bought this DVD after hearing one or two cuts from one of Diana Krall's CDs at a friend's apartment. I loved her smokey, hollow reed voice and jazzy phrasings. The DVD is really my first serious exposure to her work. And it's marvelous. It's like a little time travel trip back to the early and mid-60s when jazz was at its most sophisticated. Her interpretations (both vocal and on the piano) are cool and exciting without being clever or abstract. And the mid-60s was a great era for female vocalists. Krall seems to channel and blend the best of them--such as Dusty Springfield (compare their versions of Bacharach's "The Look of Love"), Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, and Astrid Gilberto--all without sacrificing her own astonishing originality. Interestingly, in her final encore number Krall reveals another one of her mucical personae when she gives a solo performance at the piano of a song by fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell ("A Case of You"). On top of giving a dynamite performance of some really great standards, she shows herself to be a generous performer, frequently and sincerely acknowledging her fellow musicians and the arrangers of the various numbers (she even brings the legendary Claus Ogerman out on stage).

Besides the full concert (with some interesting footage of the streets of Paris intercut at various points), there are two bonus videos and three numbers from her rehearsal with the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen. This is one DVD that will give you many hours of pleasure. There's a lot here to enjoy...over and over again.

Summary: Demonstration quality sound
Review: If you are a fan of Diana Krall you would get this DVD to see her perform. If you don't know Diana Krall this would be an excellent introduction to her music-making. But let me elaborate on the production.

The video seems to have been shot in DV. It is soft, with an overall dark hue and very good colors. The video compression must be rather high (it is a single layer disc), but there is no motion scenes, so this is no problem.

The real high of the DVD is the excellent DTS sound. You feel as if you are somewhere in rows 5-10 in Olympia, which by the way is were the central camera pointing at the stage is. Krall's voice is dead center, the piano extends perfectly from her to the right speaker, and the imaging of the rest of the band is spot on. The strings are on the far left. The audience is spread nicely around you. Occasionally a high note spills over to the rear channels, but otherwise it is just the reverbation and the audience that apperas on the rear -exactly as it should be. All instruments are recorded with life-like accuracy. This is an excellent demonstration DVD for high quality systems.

The Dolby Digital version is not as good, but it comes pretty close. The apparent difference is that the subwoofer channel is too strong, causing a smearing of the midrange and thickening the voice.

The Stereo version is very poor in comparison, as if phase problems were introduced in the downmix. Switching to Dolby Prologic, all the instruments are gathered around the center speaker with minimal soundstage and reduced bass. ...

Review: Must start with an admission!! I am sucker for Good looks! I first noticed the recent Diana Krall album when I was in Boston..and immediately bought it..and boy!! Was I glad I did? You bet!! Such pure voice. And when I was again in the Big Apple last month..I saw this DVD..and I am so smitten by it that it has not left the tray of my trusted DVD player.

The music is pure magic. The Transfer? This is what DVD was invented for. The numbers are carefully chosen..CRY ME A RIVER..almost made me cry..the first track..I LOVE BEING HERE WITH YOU is an absolute gem..the way she plays the piano..and her flirty little looks..awesome. The accoustic bassist(John Clayton), the drummer (Jeff Hamilton) and the one who plays the Viola..are out of this world.

The sound? On DTS it just takes you to the auditorium..Right on the front row, centerstage. It doesnt get any better. But please, please check out the bonus material. The videos of 'the look of love' and 'lets face the music and dance' and even the rehearsal footage is awesome. No amount of superlatives is going to do this production justice.

I have over 400 DVDs, many of which are music videos, but this one has to be one of my proudest possession. The voice, the playing of piano, especially 'EAST OF THE SUN' is a lesson in purity and sheer perfection. Not since Patricia Barber in 'Cafe Blue' and Cassandra Wilson in 'Belly of the Sun" I have heard such passionate piano playing amply supported by the bassist and the Drummer. Of course Patricia Barber does it better but she doesnt have DVD does she? Premonition records should think about it.

The DVD can be bought and treasured on Diana's looks alone. The transfer, the DTS encoding, the music and the extras are bonus. Canada has once again delivered- it has given us Alanis Morissette and lately Nelly Furtado, but I think many will agree with me that Diana Krall is Montreal's finest export.

Does it get any better than this? Afraid not. Not at least on a 5 inch shiny disc.

Summary: indescribably great
Review: No language has enough adjectives to describe this performance. Her performance is typically meticulous yet open and free. Beyond that the production, lighting and editing is incredible.
Get it, anyway you can, just get it.

Summary: Diana deserves better
Review: This video was much anticipated. I am a big fan of Diana Krall and enjoy all of her CDs. However, the audio on the Live in Paris video falls short. Her vocals and basic band sound ok. However, we can hear "pumping" in the orchestral accompaniment and applause tracks, and the low end is pretty much nonexistent. The wonderful bass playing of John Clayton is barely audible; also, there are visuals of instruments (e.g.,wind chimes) whose sound is absent from the mix. Diana is wonderful to see and hear. I'm sorry her effort has been so poorly produced, recorded and mixed. It reaches new lows in the 'Swonderful segment. Diana gets five stars as an outstanding musician. I wonder why her producer, Tommy LiPuma was relegated to associate producer status? His work on her behalf has been on the highest professional and aesthetic levels: he, along with Diana's fans, must be saddened by this undeserving production.

Summary: Sumptuous, Classic Dinner Jazz takes you down a safe road
Review: What pulls a child into one music sphere instead of another? While watching this DVD, I tried imagining Ms. Krall as a Seattle grunge rocker, and I'm just so happy that she took the musical road that she did.

Compared to some recent recordings, her piano gets a showcase role, especially in the first part of the set. Everything is spot-on, perfect, sometimes TOO perfect. If I have a criticism, it is that Ms. Krall rarely takes chances musically. Her arrangements are all immaculate, but sometimes I would trade a little polish for a little spontaneity.

Please don't misunderstand: this is a beautiful recording - better than her last few CDs, and well worth owning. She's plays tasty piano and her vocals are great. I just wish she would let it rip sometimes, the way she does in "I Don't Know Enough About You".

But this is the complaint of someone who still loves this recording. The reason I give it 4 stars is that I can't give it 4 1/2. Worth owning.

Summary: Blew me away!!
Review: I have seen her live but this is something else. It's like sitting in with the band. If you judge Diana by her CDs, you might be tempted to think of her as just a song stylist. As the DVD clearly demonstrates, this lady is a serious jazz pianist. Here sidemen are the best. Jeff Hamilton is the best drummer around. Most of my favorite songs of hers are on this DVD. The last track, Joni Mitchell's 'A Case of You', will take your breath away. Finally, the fact that Diana is a knockout is a huge bonus!

Summary: Krall takes Paris ... and the World
Review: Having been captivated by Miss Krall via CD's in recent years ... the DVD Live in Paris is a show stopper for anyone who appreciates contemporay Jazz and great music treated as is should be. Miss Krall has come a long way and takes the Paris Symphony by the hand and leads them to soaring heights. This beautiful lady with the sexy sultry voice mesmerizes the audience. She can take a old standard and "walk it" through area's beyond ones imagination, and then bring it back to where it belongs. Her primary back up Guitar, Bass and drums are an essentail part of her team and take her leads to scales rarely travled in such masterful company. The entire groups seem to be enjoying themselves during the entire performance. Needless to say, the listner also shares in the extra ordinary talent. Miss Krall is blessed with poise and talent and displays it with every note and movement. She will be a welcome visitor in my home for many years to come. I suggest everyone who loves a lilting lyric and a compelling beat to catch this DVD... you wont be sorry. Stay well Diana ...God Bless and keep sharing your talent.

Summary: The short review...
Review: This is the DVD that convinced my father to get a home theater. It blows me away, too. BTW, look for a Beatles Jazz album that contains her version of "And I Love Her"; it's a gem.
