Rating: Summary: Merveilleux ! Review: You really can't avoid to own this DVD : it includes the best of the best of Diana Krall (until now). I just think the "Olympia" audience is too uptight ! ANYWAY,DIANA KRALL'S PERFORMANCE IS OUTSTANDING ! I particularly like her version of Joni Mitchell's "A case of You". Diana Krall's music is already and will remain timeless...
Rating: Summary: A very classy, honest, heart-warming and moving evening! Review: This is not an ordinary concert! All musicians were immensely involved in the music..and I even noticed a violinist was in tears while playing one of the ballads! A very classy, honest, heart-warming and moving evening indeed.I particularly like "East of the sun, west of the moon", "May be you'll be there", and "love letters". Diana's piano skill is exceptional! She repeatedly surprised me with her teaseful improvisations ...full of surprises that make you smile, and keep tapping while listening and watching her! I reckon this would be an excellent choice of background music for your dinner party too, and you could have Diana and her band invited to your very private home.. Leonard Lau
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: This kind of talent can only be the result of reincarnation. I could not begin to express how much I love this DVD. Just buy it. I can promise you, you will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: What a great concept, an entire Diana Krall Concert on DVD! Review: BUT, I found myself somewhat disappointed with this DVD. I LOVE Diana Krall, and listening to her CD's (and mp3's) bring me great relaxation and pleasure. I did not get the same feeling listening/watching this concert in Paris. I find her BEST quality, feeling, and sincerity in her non-video recordings, and could not detect the best of these qualities in this concert. It's kinda hard to explain. Her precision is on this DVD, but not the same spirit. Also, there is too much contribution and lead from her accompianists. Actually, they are not accompianists as much as they become band members who take too much of the concert from Diana (but, they do it well). Several times I watched Diana sitting on her piano bench at the end of a song looking like "I've nothing to do here except sit still and look like I'm in control", as her band finishes the song without her participation, and she tries to find something to do with her hands. Her part is done, but the band plays on for a while. She should be ALONE on stage, with the Orchestra, guitar, drums and bass down in the orcestra pit, out of the limelight, in a strickly support type of role. They could have their own concert another day, after Diana finishes and goes home. I still love her, though, and I'll not be selling my used DVD on Amazon.
Rating: Summary: Diana Krall "Live in Paris" Review: Prior to purchasing this DVD, I had heard a few selections by Diana Krall but was not totally familiar with her work. The "Live in Paris" concert was by no means a disappointment, I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. This is a sophisticated concert with some superb musicians accompanying her. Ms. Krall is an astonishing pianist to my surprise and delightment, John Clayton's work on the acoustic bass is remarkble, and Anthony Wilson's sensitivity on electric guitar is awe inspiring, along with Jeff Hamilton on drums. Also on stage with Ms. Krall are Paulinho DaCosta whose percussion accents and highlights create a beautiful texture to the music, and John Pisano on accoustic guitar. I wish John Pisano had better "stage" placement for the concert, he is basically sitting "behind" Ms. Krall's piano in relation to the audience. The reasons I did not give this concert a 5 star rating are because: *as mentioned above, John Pisano's stage placement was inadequate to truly enjoy the contributions he made during the perfomance, *Ms. Krall's reluctance to "strecth out" vocally. I would love to hear her extend her vocal range and put more dynamics in her songs. She certainly has the ability as is slightly evidenced in a few songs. As a jazz musician and vocalist, she needs to stretch further. With the exception of the two flaws mentioned, this is a fine concert I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a sophisticated performance. The sonic and visual quality are very good and is well worth the investment in your time and money to check out. The concert is over 2 hours long but still leaves you wanting for more.
Rating: Summary: Diana Krall Live in Paris Review: Excellent, I am ordering another one!
Rating: Summary: One of the best Concert DVD's: A MUST for Diana Krall Fans! Review: Well filmed, the rehearsal footage gives ideas of how shots were lined up and which were not used. Good use of the widescreen format. Better seen on a 16X9 screen over 38 inches! Good Dolby Sound this time, but the DTS is best. Fun to see Ms. Krall at the piano and stellar performances all around with a fine, well-thought out selection of music. Whether using her quintet of players or the big band orchestral arrangements, the mix is superb and everyone's best effort shines through!
Rating: Summary: Gorgeous and profoundly moving Review: I am a pro jazz (and pop, and legit) guitarist/arranger/composer/ orchestra conductor in my country (Paraguay). I am not easily convinced but this concert is simply breathtaking. It was the first time I saw Diana performing (I have the audio CDs)and the result is stunning!. Maybe the fact that as an arranger Ogerman is one of my favs, and that I am also a Berklee alumnus (same as Diana, and same as Neozelander conductor/arranger Alan Broadbent) has something to to, but everything is first-rate in this DVD!, the featured artist (the musicality and the looks), the musicians, the productions, the conductors and arrangers, the camera work, etc. Now it is clear to me how Diana Krall got to be one of the very, very few jazz artists to achieve the goal of more than 2 million copies of a single CD sold!
Rating: Summary: Simply Excellent Review: There is not much to say except that this music concert DVD is fantastic! Great sound, great low bass -- includes a full orchestra. Wonderful camera angles. Must be played loudly and with a good set of speakers. Krall is kind of hard to hear when she talks at times, but I enjoyed the dialogue with the audience. The bonus materials really make for an excellent DVD purchase (practice and two music videos).
Rating: Summary: Quite an occasion for this gifted young artist Review: Having followed Diana Krall's work almost since the day she left Nanaimo still a teenager to play with the big dogs, I'm always happy to see new releases. This DVD was much anticipated, and the performance and the video live up to that anticipation. Inexplicably, the audio mix does not. One wonders how this rather important detail could get overlooked considering the obvious care that went into the rest of the effort. The uneven mix, lack of bottom end, and some percussion instruments that seem to be missing in action are only part of the problem. The compression is also poorly handled with pumping in some of the tracks, and at times there is a digital tizziness and sizzle. In contrast to the audio, I find the video production values lush and burnished, with the editing showing excellent taste and restraint from affectation. Over the years I've been concerned that such huge commercial success early in her career would stunt Diana's developement as an artist, and to the extent that her career path has emphasized her vocal performances at the expense of her piano work, it has. Thus it is nice to see that piano work featured more frequently here than at some dates over the last couple years. When every gig is a monumental event, whith the attendent hefty ticket prices, the audience expects to hear the popular vocal tunes, and it's hard for the artist to ignore that reality. This also tends to inhibit taking an artistic risks of the kind that can be taken at more casual dates. For me, the staggering realization when I attend Diana Krall's performances, or watch/listen to recorded media, is that while this young woman has always exhibited maturity well beyond her years, she is almost certainly still years away from achieving her full powers as an artist. It is with considerable anticipation that I look forward to seeing and hearing her career continue, although I confess I will miss the smaller more intimate venues. The bottom line here is that this is an artist with true appreciation of the material at hand and her collaborators, and it is clear she is having the time of her life, and as a result so is the audience. All else aside, this is a very worthwhile DVD, and I am certain it will see considerable play around here for many years.
