Review: The late Grover Washington Jr. was a pioneer who helped bring progressive jazz into the mainstream. His intellectual approach to his music, makes him in my eyes, one of the greatest sax players of alltime. Recorded back in 1981, this concert is nearly flawless as Grover is backed by an all-star group of studio greats including Steve Gadd[drums], Richard Tee[Keyboards], Eric Gale[guitar], Anthony Jackson[bass], and Ralph McDonald[percussion]. The absolute high point of the show is a stomping version of the classic "Mister Magic" in which the band takes turns soloing throughout. The drum and percussion rhythm section of Steve Gadd and Ralph McDonald is unbelievable as well as the guitar playing of the late Eric Gale[the grand champion of studio guitarists during that era]. Although Grover Washinton, Richard Tee and Eric Gale are no longer with us, we can still enjoy this fantastic performance thanks to this dvd and remember what a talented group Grover and his bandmates truly were. He certainly was magic!

Summary: The best concert video but very poor DVD reproduction
Review: Those who own this album in Laser-Disk format will find a big disappointment in this DVD transfer. When I saw this DVD at first time, I thought someone made a cheap copy from a rental video tape!! I don't know what the engineer did to transfer this material to DVD but the video is blurry and the audio quality is even worse. I bought a Laser-Disk format of this album back in 80s and I enjoyed their sound and video qualities. Now, Laser-disk is a thing of the past and I wanted have this beautiful music in new DVD format...and hoping to see some improvment in quality from original release of 80s...what a disapointment.

Summary: Prime Grover
Review: You really can't go wrong with Grover. Those who are familiar with him know what to expect, excellent musicianship, class,etc.
Those who own this on video will not find any extras,and the 'access' to solos is annoying when you are trying to go to the next track. You will have to press the next track button two or three times to get to the next tune. The video is blurry and the audio is not an improvement over the videotape. Other than having this release on dvd, there is really no reason to replace your videotape.
Now with the gripes out of the way, this is definitely prime Grover. The band is excellent. With the aforementioned quibbles aside, this is an important document of Grover Washington Jr. in 1981 riding an artistic peak.
