Summary: LOOKING FOR THE ORGINAL
Review: NEED A COPY OF THE ORGINAL PORGY & BESS DOES ANYONE KNOW EMAIL ME VC13@webtv.net OR HERB@weedman.com

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Not as earthy as the 1958 film version
Review: I was disappointed with this video. I remember the 58 film version and have copies of the original soundtrack (minus Sammy Davis)and find the music lush and full. Regardless of the alleged dubbing problems I still think the original film version was superb. Has anyone any info on how we might get the Gershwin family to change their mind and release the 58 version on video???

Summary: What a dud!
Review: Can someone out there ask the Gershwin family to get their heads out of their collective as""" and DIG UP THE BURIED version of the ORIGINAL PORGY AND BESS with Sydney Poiter, Sammy Davis and the great Dandridge! Can't they take a hint!!! Maybe if they're reminded that there's big bucks to be made they'll relent. I'll pay the price to see this classic.

Review: I loved this video, but I too miss the orig. I was a young girl when they showed the orig. on tv for the last time. I would love to see the orig. right now,so i can see all of the actors, portier, dandridge, davis etc. I hope that the Gershwin family decides to release it. I will definetly be one of the first in line to purchase a copy!

Summary: Original, Please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: We need a release of the original version starring Sidney Poiter and Dorothy Dandridge, just to name a few. Ms. Dandridge's biography will air later this year and it is a shame that we cannot see the original version in which she starred. I believe that all African-American films should be available. Geez, there are enough of us asking for it, why not release it?

Summary: A monumental Opera performance !
Review: It was a revelation to see and hear this great work. Like many others on this page though, what I really seek is the ORIGINAL film version with Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge and Sammy Davis Jnr. ARE YOU ABLE TO HELP ? SO MANY HAVE ASKED - WILL THERE BE ANY RESPONSIVE ACTION ?

Summary: You'll have to settle for this
Review: The movie you all want to buy is like "The Song of the South"- you will never see it on VHS/DVD. The reason is different- the Gershwin family owns the rights to it, and they hated it so much that they decided to bury it. It was not the opera but the adaptation that was bad. Poitier is overdubbed by some other guy, and in fact, so is every one but Sammy Davis. In typical late 60s fashion, the dubs are bad and easy to notice, detracting from the overall experience. It is not a story easily made into a film, so the opera version is the best route for true lovers. I, too, have the original Decca LP and a tape copy. They are better than the film for sure.

Review: PUT ME ON THE LIST FOR THE SIDNEY POITIER VERSION ALSO....HAVE LOOKED ALL OVER FOR IT, FOR YEARS. ALMOST PURCHASED THE ABOVE VERSION...BUT DECIDED TO PASS. IT'S NICE TO KNOW I'M NOT ALONE ON THIS QUEST. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL LP BUT IT'S NATURALLY PRETTY SCRATCHY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. ANYONE KNOW IF THE RECORDING IS AVAILABLE ANYWHERE? THANK YOU.
