Summary: Another person longing for the original!
Review: I was overwhelmed by the no. of people who have longed for the original movie, just like me and feel that any other production pales in comparison. My parents played the music as I grew up and I never did get to see the movie (I am 48). I have had the Samuel Goldwyn Meyer Co. write to me yrs ago that the movie is tied up in his estate, and a movie channel wrote me that the film's condition has caused the delay. Hard to know what to believe, but if anyone hears of a release/copies available I would be grateful to know. Vicki at:[e-mail]com

Summary: Porky and Bess 1959
Review: I loved this movie growing up as a child. I have trying for years to get a copy. I've been telling my children about it for years, and we have seen another version on the pbs channel. That doesn't even come close to the original. Please if it ever comes out on VHS/DVD I want to be on that list. Was it really destroyed, I've heard that before, if so, do you know why??

Summary: Spectacular News For Those Looking For The 1959 Movie!!
Review: This two-tape opera version was indeed superb but it clearly doesn't come even close to the long-sought-after all-time-classic rarity of director Otto Preminger's 1959 film version of Porgy And Bess....produced by Samuel Goldwyn. Yes, the 1959 film is definitely the one you've been looking for....the one starring Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis, Jr., Pearl Bailey, Brock Peters and Diahann Carroll....featuring the music of the incomparable George Gershwin....the film which, of course, won Academy Awards for music directors André Previn and Ken Darby. And now....with Dorothy Dandridge: Little Girl Lost having been featured on A&E's Biography....as well as the much-acclaimed Introducing Dorothy Dandridge not only having made its debut on HBO....but also the amazing Halle Berry having won her most highly-deserved Golden Globe Award as well as her most impressively-earned Emmy Award....1959's Porgy And Bess will certainly become even more of a pursued rarity than ever before! For all those who are major fans of and are interested in discussing....and/or viewing....the 1959 film version....in both the full-screen pan-and-scan format....and also in the awe-inspiring widescreen letterboxed format....please feel free to E-Mail me at porgyandbess1959@freeze.com!

Summary: No remakes of ' Porgy and Bess'
Review: Please tell the many fans of the original 'Porgy & Bess' why this superb movie was never made available for those who trully loved it? I, for one, do not even want to view any remake, because without hesitation I know nothing can come close to the original. In 1959 I was coming of age and this movie really left an impression on me to this day. Please someone, everyone who cares push to get this wonderful play on video/dvd and on the store shelves.

Summary: 1950's version: Gershwin's MUST RELEASE...WE HAVE SUFFERED
Review: After reading all of the comments and refusing to submit to reviewing a 'copy' of the orginal, I implore the Gershwin's to release the orginal Porgy and Bess. Based on all of the above comments, and I am sure if we went public there would be thousands of requests to purchase the original just on the first day of release, I pray the Gershwin's overcome their internal restrictions and allow the fans to bask in the glory of one of the greatest works of art ever made! The music, the acting, the settings; ALL MAGNIFICIENT!!! HONORABLE GERSHWIN FAMILY, PLEASE HAVE A HEART!!!

Summary: Wonderful "live" production but don't look for 1959 film
Review: For those who are looking for the 1959 Otto Preminger film of "Porgy and Bess" with Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge: you may as well stop looking. The Gershwin family a long, long time ago had all the prints as well as the original film negative totally destroyed. The Gershwins did not like the 1959 film, thought it did a disservice to George Gershwin, bought the rights to it and destroyed the entire production. I was always under the impression that only barbarians destroyed works of art, but these relations of the great composer gave me a whole new view of the meaning of the word "barbarian." So be happy with the current VHS tape. I saw this production on stage and it is just as good on tape. Hopefully, the DVD will be out soon. The following is for the folks who put out hundreds of trashy horror movies on DVD but who don't give a tinker's damn about such things as opera classics: put this production on DVD! The 1959 movie is, literally, history. This is all we have, and it is wonderful!
