Rating: Summary: Finally! Our prayers have been answered! Review: Great to see MGM/Paramount is finally giving this wonderful movie the dvd treatment it so richly deserves. Like most reviewers, I too grew up watching this every Christmas without fail. I first saw Scrooge when it was originally released in the theatres back in 1970 as a small tyke and have been hooked on the songs ever since. Now, as an adult, I watch my worn VHS tape every X-mas eve and I am taken back to the wonderful holidays of my youth. I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was expecting. I can't compare it to other musicals because personally I don't care for musicals in general. But Scrooge is one of the most wonderful Christmas movies period! Whether it's the songs or acting or just the wonderful Dickensian atmosphere, it's a must for every familys holiday video library.
Rating: Summary: Where's the Music? Review: This is the worst version of Scrooge I have ever seen. I bought this video because I love musicals, well the music in this movie is sadly lacking. While the songs "Thank You Very Much" and " I Love Life" are wonderful songs, they are done so poorly in this version that it is painful to watch. The casting is awful! Scrooge looks like some old backstreet drunk, rather than a miserly old man. I can't imagine what the thinking was for the casting of the ghost of christmas past and an elderly woman. The best parts of the background story of Scrooges life are left out of this version almost no time is given to even develop any sympathy for Tiny Tim and to much time is given to the parts with the ghost of christmas future. The "hell" scene is particularly awful.I do not reccomend this movie to anyone!
Rating: Summary: It's about time!!!! Review: I am so excited that this is finally being offered in DVD format! This has been a holiday traidition in our family for years. I remember seeing this film on television when I was a small child and then later incorporating it into our family tradition as I got older. It has wonderful costumes, music and the acting is superb!!! I highly recommend this to all. It is definitely a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit!
Rating: Summary: Sing A Song Of Gladness And Cheer! Review: SCROOGE is finally here on DVD in widescreen. For me this is a dream come true. I have waited years for this ultimate version of my all time favorite movie! I saw this movie when it first premiered in November 1970, and I have seen it so many times since I have lost count. I am lover of classic films, and I recognize that this version lacks the subtle qualities of earlier versions. Remember...this version IS a musical, and it represents well the genre of movie musicals of the late 1960s, bringing to mind memories of OLIVER! done in 1968. I personally feel that this is one of the best casts assembled to represent these well-known Dickens characters. Finally...a Tiny Tim you don't want to kick across the street. Albert Finney is wonderful, representing both the young and old Scrooge. Alec Guiness does get a little too fey for my taste as Marley, but you can tell he is having a good time. The sets are wonderfully atmospheric, as are the street people and set decorations. Lastly, I want to discuss Leslie Bricusse's songs. Over the years I have read how bland these songs are. I totally disagree. From "A Christmas Carol" at the beginning, to "Happiness" in the middle, to the Oscar-nominated "Thank You Very Much", the songs are touching, haunting, vivacious, and memorable. My family listens to this soundtrack every Christmas. Don't be a humbug...get SCROOGE! You will love it!
Rating: Summary: a dickins of a film Review: This delightfull version of the old christmas classic has you scared, laughing and singing to some of the most memorable songs ever written for a movie. albet finney gives an excellent performance as ebenezer scrooge twisted and bitter at the world only to realise what he has missed. this movie will leave you with a warm feeling from head to to. A must see christmas movie for all the family. Also some memorable performances by alec guinness and Kenneth moore. Yule be shouting "god bless us everyone" well maybe not. excellent.
Rating: Summary: Heartfelt and Moving Review: While this version of the classic Dickens' tale did not receive critical acclaim, it remains one of my favorites and richly deserves this DVD release. Albert Finney is magical in his portrayal of Scrooge, transforming his physical appearance through the art of makeup and fine acting from a robust youth to an aged man during the course of the story. The supporting cast is also remarkable, and the songs add flavor to the overall atmosphere of Dickens' era London, as well as great and unexpected depth to the core theme of the story: the precarious reclamation of a person's soul. Dickens' brilliant story manages to convey religious themes without preaching, and provides an accessible character in Scrooge that we can understand, root for, and ultimately, rejoice with and learn from when his heart is turned outward to his fellow man. Vastly entertaining and remarkably fresh, this life-affirming version of "A Christmas Carol," along with many of its songs, will stay with viewers long after the final credits have rolled. For me, "Scrooge" has become a treasured Christmas tradition alongside so many other beloved yule time favorites. I applaud its long overdue DVD release!
