Summary: One of the great Christmas films
Review: We have enjoyed this film for many years on VHS format and were thrilled to see it available in DVD. It is a joy from start to finish. I am perplexed that the review from Amazon would take the point of view which was stated. I wonder if they saw the same film. It is a great gift for everyone on your list. The music is delightful and well done. Albert Finney is the best Scrooge that I have seen. It makes all of the other versions pale.

Summary: Music not good and not memorable? Bah Humbug!!!
Review: I'm not really sure what these other people (who say the music is no good in this movie) are hearing. The songs and music in Scrooge are hauntingly beautiful, catchy, and a perfect fit for the bittersweet message Scrooge projects. Scrooge is such a big part of my family's Christmas every year, and it's one of my favorite movies ever. Albert Finney is nothing short of miraculous as Ebenezer Scrooge. This movie also combines elements of joy, humor and horror to create a wonderful musical that makes me appreciate the true meaning of Christmas. I can't imagine why anyone would dislike the songs in Scrooge. It only makes me feel sorry for the critics who aren't deeply moved and affected by this amazing movie.

Summary: Albert Finney Is One of The Best Scrooges!
Review: I was 5 years old when Scrooge started off in the theaters and it is one of my favorite movie adaptations of The classic Charles Dickens tale and I think Albert Finney gave an excellent performance as Ebenezer Scrooge! very inspired and believable performance as a greedy and grouchy old miser. The supporting actors are very good too. David Collings is one of the best Bob Cratchit's and I also liked Richard Beaumont as Tiny Tim, he was certainly the cutest Tiny Tim and though I agree that maybe he looked a little to healthy for a child who was supposed to be so sickly he is still my favorite Tiny Tim. I had this movie on VHS tape but the tape was starting to get worn out and I have been waiting for a long time for the movie to come out on DVD and when I found out it was finaly released on DVD I put it on my Christmas wish list but didn't get it so I just recently ordered it for myself and I watched it last night and it was so nice to watch the movie in widescreen instead of pan and scan and I enjoyed the story, the music, etc and the only thing I can think that would have made this DVD better is extras like interviews with the actors, etc but I still very greatly recommend this DVD!

Summary: Truly inspiring. The feel-good movie of the century.
Review: Albert Finney does an outstanding job portraying Scrooge. The music in this film is unforgettable. "I Hate People" will leave your family convulsing in laughter. And then, when Scrooge sings in reminiscence of his childhood, and when he sings in retrospection of his one chance at love, it will leave nobody in your house (with half a heart) dry-eyed.

The unique choreography in the dance scenes is worth noting, too.

There is one part in the film, however, which leaves the viewer wanting. Scrooge in his boyhood is inside, while the other children, including his sister, are outside playing. Why is he forced to stay inside?

Summary: The best version of "Scrooge". Colorful!
Review: This is absolutly the definitive version of "A Christmas Carol". It is the version I first saw and never forgot. As a young child, seeing this film with a free ticket with Santa on it for free Admission for children at the Antelope Theater (now gone, no thanks to City Council) was an annual special treat. Sometimes they would show Marco (1973), starring Desi Arnaz Jr., with Scrooge (1970) as a double feature. This version is great for children to see and adults will be delighted too. Filmed in brilliant color in 1970. The musical numbers will tickle your fancy. Albert Finney plays "Scrooge". Sir Alec Guiness plays "Ghost Marley". Dame Edith Evans plays "Ghost of Christmas Past". The film is rated "G".

Summary: What a great Christmas surprise!
Review: We just finished watching this film, as we have each and every Christmas for the last decade. However, this time our kids are ages 3, 5, and 7. It was fun watching them become wrapped up in the movie, and in the dancing that takes place throughout the movie. After putting them to bed, we checked online, purely as a whim, to see if the DVD copy had been released. To our delight, there it was! Up until now, we have had to borrow the in-law's copy of the well-used VHS tape. We can't wait to show the DVD to them: Mom and Dad will be thrilled, as this film is easily their favorite.

I used to wonder why everything seemed so grey and dark in the movie, until I discovered that it's an intentional cinematographic style which was popular in the sixties and early nineteen seventies: They mute all the colors of the extraneous scenery (and sometimes even the extras) in order to focus the audience attention on the primary actors and story. This film pulls it off wonderfully.

Summary: Madness takes its toll!
Review: I really don't believe all the rave reviews for this stinker. To start with, the musical numbers are annoying at their best, and quite disturbing when they sink to their lowest. Further, how dare anyone call Finney's performance the best Scrooge, or even place it in the top ten? Will someone explain to me why he chose to play the character as a developmentally delayed adult? He seems to have based his performance on a resident of a group home at which I once worked. Rent it and make your own observations, but don't trust the hype!

Summary: Better with each viewing
Review: I totally agree that your reviewer missed the boat on this very good rendition of the Dickens classic. I've had it for years on laser disc and watch it without fail each holiday season. The music and dancing offset the bleakness of the story, but all the necessary elements are there due to the fine acting and very good special effects. Now that it is available on DVD, I hope that many others discover this 5-star gem.

Summary: And they restored the Overture!
Review: Like so many others reviewing here, I was first won over by this movie when it premiered in 1970. I was a child of 4 and even then was captured by the beauty of Leslie Briccuse's score. One reviewer complained that the soundtrack was never released. It was. My mom bought me the record right after we saw it and I must have played that piece of vinyl to dust ! Through the years we've all had to make do with tv broadcasts that mercilessly truncated this movie and reprint copies that always gave the film a grainy look. The new DVD release has restored the picture to fine clarity. To praise the cast (Finney, Guiness, etc.) would be redundant as everyone else has correctly done so. This film has it all. It lifts your spirit, makes you laugh and certainly cry and leaves you the better for being alive. Hopefully they will eventually come out with a special edition DVD with extras. For me the crowning glory of this release was the inclusion of the Overture which was used for the original theatrical release and which started off the album. That beautiful piece of music has been cut out of every television broadcast of the movie for the past 33 years. It's good to hear it again. As for the pitiful amazon reviewer who took exception to the film and to anyone who has panned it, they deserve to be boiled with their xmas pudding and buried with a stake of holly through their hearts. (Hope I got that right.)
