Summary: Scrooge a musical treat
Review: As a musical adapation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is wonderfully magical. The performances are perfect to the story and the twists, Christmas Past as played by Dame Edith Evens and Scrooge finding himself in hell, bring freshness to the familiarity of the tale. The music and lyrics develop the plot and characters perfectly and Thank You Very Much is a bona fide show stopper. If you're tired of the usual telling of this classic story, this is a good way to see it anew.

Review: simply the best interpretation of a christmas carol ever, the performances are equisite and the singing and visuals are sublime. at times chilling, inspiring, heart wrenching and hilrious, this is the best christmas movie i have ever seen...and i don't usually like musicals! the definitive SCROOGE.

Review: I, like most people, have seen an almost limitless number of interpretations of this classic tale. This version, in my opinion, ranks at the top of the heap. Unlike some reviewers, I find the tunes in this musical to be excellent. Even my husband, who in some aspects resembles the title character of this movie when it comes to the holidays and their trappings, comes running to sing along with the hysterical "I Hate People". "Thank You Very Much," a tune that is alternately a mocking slamfest and a heartfelt rendering of thanks in various parts of the movie, is a standout tune that demands you to join in. You will find yourself humming this one several days after watching "Scrooge." Albert Finney, who was still a relatively young man when this movie was made, really nails the character of Scrooge, and really captures the essence of this great literary figure in all of his painful, and sometimes laughable, humanity. It's hard to believe that an actor so young would have the empathy to deliver a realistic portrayal of a bitter, lonely, and isolated old man. The supporting cast is great, particularly Alec Guiness as Marley. The exchanges between Scrooge and Marley alone make this movie worth watching, if not owning (too bad it's not available in DVD format). Do yourself and your family a favor and check out this "Scrooge." You won't be content with any other video renditions of this tale any more.

Summary: The Quintessential Christmas Carol
Review: Every child should see this, every adult, teenager, everyone who loves Christmas needs to see this, whether its Christmastime or not. Albert Finney captures the very essence of Mr. Scrooge. Alec "Obi-Wan" Guieness portrays a perfect Marley, and the rest of the actors, especially Bob Crachit, the Crachit children, and the ghosts are straight out of Dickens. The scenes where Scrooge confronts himself as he is letting his true love exit out of his life, are painstakingly real for anyone that has lost love. And the lessons Scrooge learns from the ghosts applies to everyone. The musical numbers are extrordinary, and will keep you humming them hours later, especially, "Father Christmas", and "Thank you Very Much". This movie will make you laugh out loud, especially the scenes where the Ghost of Xmas Present laughs at Ebeneezer, make you shed tears, and make your heart joyful as Scrooge redeems himself in the end. The effects were top rate for 1970, and it contains some very scary scenes, such as the scene in Hell, and the flying ghosts. A wonderful "feel good" movie, and Christmas is just not the same without it.

Review: I first saw this film over 16 years ago. I immediately went in search of a copy to buy (unsuccesfully, I might add - I had to special order it on VHS). It has been a beloved part of our family Christmas tradition ever since. Decorating the Christmas tree would just not be the same without this movie. Favorite songs - "December the 25th" - "Thank You Very Much" - "I Like Life" - oh heck they're all wonderfully romantic, memorable Christmas songs! Do yourself and your family a favor and dismiss the so-called experts. My only question - when is this wonderful film going to be available in DVD?

Summary: Weird but good!
Review: Nice but weird adaptation of A Christmas Carol, Albert Finney was quite good as Scrooge, Alec Guinness normally was an outstanding actor but his performance as Marley was too campy and over the top, I just felt he hammed it up a bit too much. Though some of the songs in the movie are forgettable the songs December The 25th and Thank You Very Much were nice. Though not my favorite Chrstmas Carol movie I do have it on video and it is defintely worthy to be in my video collection because despite the campy and very weird portrayal of Jacob Marley it's really a nice entry in the crowded Christmas Carol video market, I also have to agree that a G rating is very misleading and it probably should have been rated PG.

Summary: A Dickens of a Musical!
Review: "Scrooge" captures the world of Dicken's famous miser in a style reminiscent of "Oliver" and "Mary Poppins". While all the songs are not showstoppers (Isabelle's love song and Tiny Tim's lullaby tend to slow things down a bit), the musical score is fun, frothy and toe-tapping. Who can forget "I Like Life" and "Thank You Very Much"?
Performances are good, including greats like Evans, Guiness, Moore and the delightful Finney. The special effects are incredible, even for today, and the scenes of characters' flying betray no evidence of wires (that can not even be said for the classic "Mary Poppins", in which wires are visible everywhere!) The finale, a medley of up-beat songs and dances is full of redemption and sheer joy. If you do not shed a tear when Finney exclaims to the doorknocker that he is on his way to Christmas dinner with "his family", check your heart. It may have a stake of holly through it! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Summary: Great cast, sets and wonderful tunes. An outstanding musical
Review: Out family is so happy to be able to get a new VHS tape - We have had only a scratchy beat-up ex-library copy. BUT what we really need is a DVD. (we hope soon?) Albert Finney is the best Scrooge ever and the singing and dancing are marvelous. This has to be right up there with Oliver, Mary Poppins, and Sound of Music as a great family movie. (Even Tiny Tim is charming, in spite of his tinny squeaky little voice.)
