Summary: Simply the best!
Review: This movie has become a family tradition since it came out in 1970. My family absolutely loves everything about it. We have watched all the versions of a Christmas Carol and Albert Finney is the quintessential Scrooge. The music adds another dimension to the story that is missing in other productions. I too would love to see this movie on DVD. The music would be even better. Yes, there was a soundtrack made but I haven't seen it out in years.

Summary: A family Christmas tradition -- at last on DVD
Review: Most on the previous reviews say everything I'd like to say: this is a wonderful movie with memorable songs and a great performance by Albert Finney (as well as much of the cast). Yes, it takes liberties with Dickens' text, but so does almost every other version of "A Christmas Carol". But "Scrooge" captures the heart of Dickens' message--of regret, repentance, and redemption--and still moves me deeply even after 30+ years of seeing it. Many of my (mostly-grown) children say that "Scrooge" is their favorite Christmas film (along with the hilarious "A Christmas Story").

I saw this film in its original theatrical release back in 1970; there is a lot of visual impact lost in the VHS pan-and-scan version. (I still remember my acute disappointment seeing it on TV the first time.) I'm thrilled it's now out on DVD; we bought copies for all our childen (ages 18-30) for Christmas. Thank you very much. :-) ..bruce..

Summary: Scary, but good
Review: This movie is sort of scary. Especially the scene with Marley & Scrooge floating through the air with all the ghosts around them. And Scrooge's big house is creepy. All the scenes in Scrooge's house are a little scary. But it's presented well. The songs are good, especially "December the 25th," and "Thank You Very Much." It's a great Christmas movie.

Summary: Christmas at its best!
Review: The story is as old as the book but the musical brings it new life. It draws one in and the musical score makes you sore. It's filled with love and laughter and gives us all a reason to pause and think about what the season is all about. Try it, you'll like it.

Summary: Musicals Rock
Review: If you like musicals, I believe this is the only one I have seen based on "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens; this one rocks. Who can forget the song, "Thank You Very Much", where Scrooge is witness to his own eulogy? He asks, "what did I do?" The answer is, he DIED. Everyone is so happy he has died and left them, as well as their debts to him, unpaid, whereupon they merrily rip pages out of his infernal ledger book and throw them to the wind.

Can we forget the song, "I Hate People"..."I despise them, I abhor them.....and I don't care if they hate ME!"

If you like musicals, you will love this one, and remember it for years to come. Television used to show it every year, and although they mostly ceased to do so, I remember it well and have not forgotten it. I hadn't seen it in twenty years, yet it is an indellible piece in my memory.

Summary: DVD
Review: I don't understand why this movie has not been released yet on DVD. This is a true christmas classic in our house and all of our relatives homes. It tells a great classic story interlaced with good songs. I can only imagine watching it in High Def on DVD. Paramount, wise up and make some money off of us and give us what we want.

Summary: Mr. Neame, Mr. Bricusse & Mr. Finney - THANK YOU, VERY MUCH!
Review: I BEGIN BY WRITING IN ALL CAPS. FANS OF THIS FILM WILL UNDERSTAND WHY AND ITS CRITICS NEED TO BE YELLED AT! I WONDER WHAT FILM THOSE CRITICS WERE WATCHING AND, MOREOVER, ON WHAT PLANET? IF EVER A FILM PRESENTED REASON TO DISREGARD PROFESSIONAL REVIEWERS, THIS IS IT. THEY TOTALLY MISSED THE BOAT ON THIS ONE. ACTUALLY, BEING SO STEEPED IN THE TRADITION OF PRAISE FOR THE ALASTAIR SIM VERSION, I BELIEVE THEY DIDN'T EVEN PERMIT THEMSELVES THE LUXURY OF A TICKET TO JOURNEY, FOR A MOMENT UNBIASED, ABOARD THIS GLORIUS CINEMATIC VEHICLE. I PITY THEM THEIR PREJUDICE, FOR THIS FILM IS BRILLIANTLY CONCEIVED, PERFECTLY CAST, BEAUTIFULLY SCORED AND FLAWLESSLY EXECUTED!

In a quieter but no less enthusiastic tone, let me say that Albert Finney is nothing short of miraculous in the role of this famous Dickens character. His portrayal is definitive. If in any way he's not the Scrooge of the novel, then he's the Scrooge that should have been penned. Indeed, to those who fault the film for deviation from the novel or the times portrayed therein, I say - SO WHAT? The film, after all, is NOT a documentary. It succeeds at the highest level at what it was designed to be - a musical adaptation and engrossing entertainment. Try not getting misty-eyed as Scrooge laments his lost love. Try not playing along with the 'Minister's Cat'. Try viewing the 'Thank You Very Much' scene and not wishing you too were wearing a hat that you could toss in the air.

I had the good fortune to see this movie during the holiday season of its premier year at Radio City Music Hall. I have viewed it yearly ever since. Each and every year and even on my little screen, when Scrooge places Santa's hat on the doorknocker and closes the door behind him, it's all I can do but stand up and cheer. Do yourself a favor and see this movie in its un-chopped, commercial-free entirety. The laser disc, though offering a less than pristine transfer, does include the wonderful musical prelude. I truly hope the film will someday see the light of DVD. It is not just among the best Christmas movies but, rather, one of the best films ever. A thoroughly marvelous production. To its critics, one word - HUMBUG!

Summary: Scrooge,,,,a wonderful classic
Review: Unlike the editorial review, i LOVE this version. Albert Finny and the entire cast is WONDERFUL and Brilliant. The music score will keep you humming long after the film comes to a climatic "Thankyou very much" end. I have the widescreen lazer-disc version with overture and exit music. This film has become a tradition at Christmas time for my family and friends. The story is pure Dickens and very well adapted for the screen. Maybe the editor was looking for sex, but if you looking to see a wonderful classic, get this one. I only hope that a DVD version will come out this year. Laser-disc are fine, but i can just imagine what this would sound like on DVD with 5-channel stereo sound like it's original theatre release.

Summary: "Scrooge" Passed Over By Critical Scrooges
Review: For reasons that are inexplicable to me this wonderful musical is frequently derided by the critics. At times they say "Finney paints his character with a broad brush." At others they say "there isn't much to recommend it besides Finney's portrayal." They usually say it pales compared to earlier versions. Nonsense! Simply put, this is the finest rendering of Dicken's classic tale! It is done with taste, stunning visual effects, and music that carries the story ever-forward. It makes earlier (black and white) versions look like "creakers and groaners" by comparison. Albert Finney's make-up is amazing, and his acting is thoroughly believable. This film is my pick for "Best Picture Oscar of 1970." Outstanding!
