Summary: excellent movie; sloppy review br Tom Keogh
Review: One of the best "Rock and Roll" biography movies and an excellent depiction of the times. But I wonder how someone could review a movie while paying so little attention to the plot. Elizabeth Pena played Ritchie's girlfriend who was seduced by and married Ritchie's brother. Danielle von Zerneck played Donna- the object of Ritchie's popular song, not his Mother. His Mother was played by Rosanna Soto- an accomplished actress. If Mr Keogh had been paying attention to the plot, then he would have come to the conclusion that if Elizabeth Pena was Ritchie's sister, then his brother would have to have married his half-sister.

Summary: Biopic of 50's rocker
Review: Ritchie Valens was on the cusp of becoming a big star when he was tragically killed on February 3, 1959 along with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper in a cornfield in Iowa. The day is infamously known as the day the music died and Valens was a mere seventeen years old. The film is quickly paced and all involved give spirited performances. Lou Diamond Philips plays Ritchie and he gives a solid performance. The real star of the film is Esai Morales who gives an explosive performance as Ritchie's brother Bob. While Ritchie seems to have it all, big talent, a beautiful girlfriend and the love of his mother, Bob is the opposite. Shiftless, with no sense of direction, Bob becomes jealous of Ritchie and his anger is palpable. While Ritchie is riding high, he faces the pressure of being Latino in the lily-white 50's. His girlfriend is white and her father forbids her to see him which helped produce Valens' lone top ten hit "Donna". The ubiquitous Joe Pantiliano shows up as the producer who signs and records Valens and rockers Brian Setzer and Marshall Crenshaw play Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly respectively. The real star of the film is the brilliant soundtrack recorded by Latino rockers Los Lobos. The title track hit number one in 1987 as did the accompanying soundtrack.

Summary: Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and Big Bopper all die together.
Review: This film is a good companion piece to the film The Buddy Holly Story (1978). Ritchie Valens (real name: Richardo Valenzuela), Buddy Holly and Jiles Perry "J.P." Richardson "The Big Bopper" were traveling on the same private plane on the night of February 3, 1959. The plane crashed and all perished. Waylon Jennings did not get on the plane at the last minute. All three performers had popular music on the charts at the time and ironically perhaps their music became more popular afterwards. DVD contains Audio Commentary by Director Luis Valdez, Producer Taylor Hackford and cast. Another Audio Commentary by Taylor hackford and Daniel Valdez. Two music videos: "La Bamba" performed by Los Lobos. "Lonely Teardrops" performed by Howard Huntsberry. There is also a featurette of the behind-the-scenes of the film and most interesting interviews with the real mother and brother and girlfriend, Donna, of Ritchie Valens. Real-life radio personality Rick Dees ... plays a radio disc jockey in this film.

Summary: Viva Ricardo Valenzuela!
Review: This film revived the legend of Ritchie Valens, one of the 3 victims in the plane crash "the day the music died". Although there was a lot "added" to the true Ritchie Valens story, there were many true elements. The fact that he and his older brother were rivals for the single mom's affection is very clearly stated. Ritchie was always Mama's favorite, and when he died, the older brother felt out of place, knowing that the mother never loved him the same way, no matter what he tried to impress her. -- Another well-known fact was that Ritchie ran into stiff opposition when he fell in love with "Donna". Donna's Dad was not about to welcome a "wetback" into his family, no matter how successful a musician he may be. -- The one-hit-wonder gained immortality when he died at 17, only months after he got to taste a bit of the "American Dream". Los Lobos took "La Bamba" to the #1 spot on the US charts, and it has been playing more ever since on the Oldies Stations of the world. A fantastic song made popular by a Rock & Roll Legend!

enjoy movies that are based on true to life
stories. This is also a state of the art DVD and one
can really enjoy the lively music with
a surround sound system. The picture is
clear and the sound quality is great. This is also
a very hard DVD to find in stores. Add
this to your DVD collection if you are an

Summary: Good film about musical stardom
Review: This movie is a fun ride to watch as talented underdog and underclass Ritchie Valens shoots his way to the top. The music (Los Lobos is great), excitement, and 50's nostalgia alone make this worth watching. Good casting, good acting, good character and relationship development, glimpses into family life and road life, as well as cameos of other famous performers of the day add a lot to the movie.
