Summary: Sexy Ewan
Review: This is my absolute favorite movie of all time. I am in love with this movie. It has great actors, fantastic music, somewhat chaotic camera work (anyone who telll you that they got dizzy must have motion sickness because it isn't that bad), and most importantly, Ewan McGregor. (He is the sexiest man on earth!!!)

The music for this film is all pop culture type of music. Most of it is put in some sort of medley. It actually fits in extremely well. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, though they are both normally actors, have fantastic voices. Ok, so they shoudln't become opera singers or anything, but they did great since this is their first real attempt at singing. "Elephant Love Medley" is hands down the best song in the movie. Then "Raoxanne" and "COme What May".

The costumes in this movie are absolutely fnatastic. they made each of the 300 costumes by hand. the sets are also amazing and very intricate. Though there aren't many special effects, one of the best is that of the green absinthe fairy.

Now to the main point of the movie: Ewan McGregor. Although I had never really heard of him before Star Wars, he is one of my new favorite actors. He is also a fantastic singer. he is so gorgeous in this movie, especially when he sings. I have an obsession with him now and have found that he is a tremendous actor who doesn't get as much credit as he should.

Baz Luhrman is a great director. "Strictly Ballroom" and "Romeo and Juliet" are also intriguinly different films. Though you may not like Leonardo DiCaprio (I sympathize with you), it was still a fascinating movie. I can't wait to see what he works on next; I will definitely be seeing it.

Overall, this is a fantastic movie. Those people who absolutely loathe it, probably just have a grudge against one of the actors or the director. Even my friends who hated it at first have now bought the soundtrack and at least like it now. Just give it a try and go into it with an open mind; don't go by the negative critics' reviews. This movie is Spectacular, Spectacular (ok that is probably used way too much by now)!

Summary: Nothing but random scenes and songs tossed together
Review: "Moulin Rouge"is nothing but a bunch of random scenes
tossed together with random songs slapped on.The costumes
were from different eras, too(like the 1920's showgirl costumes).
If this is supposed to take place in 1900,why are there
things like 1930's style buildings and songs that came
from the 40's,50's and 60's?The guy in the ringmaster
outfit was terribly out-of-place for a club like that-it
looks like someone yanked him out of a circus tent and
stuck him at the nightclub/bar.The actors yell their lines
instead of just talking normally, and the acting is WAY
overdone.I don't remember who directed this movie, but they did
a horrible job!The only thing this movie has going for it is
the songs. That's all.If you want "Moulin Rouge",I suggest just
buying the CD,and forget about seeing the movie.

Summary: Narcissistic Pretentious Grandstanding
Review: What a Bomb ! What personal insecurity leads "Baz" Luhrmann to
make such a piece of pretentious grandstanding ? And why does
he call himself "Baz" ? Isn't Baz a discredited slang name for
Barry that was rarely used in Australia in the 1960s ?

What does a song about New Orleans have to do with Paris ? The
French must hate this film, if for no other reason than the fact
that the French have reasonably good taste in pop music - unlike
Australia and the USA. The awful, banal whitebread music on this
film is typical to what one gets on dreadful Australian and
American radio - and the public loves it. Pity.

Summary: all you need is love
Review: I felt compelled to review this, to let everyone know that this dvd is really worth every cent. It is chock full of extras within its two disc set. Not only a beautiful display, this dvd has hours of extra footage. Ranging from deleted scenes, interviews upon interviews with both director and actors, to music clips and the complete dances that were shortened for the movie.

Moulin Rouge was a great movie of 2001, a musical, comedy and drama all wrapped into one film. The actors did a wonderful job, as did the writers and directors. The film is so visually stunning, and with all the wonderful extras, there is no reason not to buy this dvd.

Summary: DVD production good, movie itself is very weak...
Review: I skipped the theatrical release... the trailer is much more intense and enthralling, believe it or not, than the movie itself. The DVD product shows off very well the possibilities for additional content not available in the video format.

After watching all of the director's commentary and behind-the-scenes material, I am convinced that the best of the movie's story was removed prior to production. While the set and costume design are stunning and should garner several award nominations, the singing was quite weak, the acting pretty good given the poor script and choppy "MTVish super quick cuts" editing style. The editing probably had the most detrimental affect on the overall quality of the finished product. Make-up design was excellent, as well.

Speaking of "product," I can't help but think that, in the end, that's all that mattered: creating a highly marketable product without full concentration on the storytelling, visual presentation / pacing, and character development. I didn't expect an "Apocalypse Now" level of darkness or character development, but "Moulin Rouge" was horribly weak, using the "rough and wild" bohemian atmosphere in Paris to serve as only the most superficial setup for the movie. There was no balance to the slick musical numbers and nice costuming... bad wasn't really bad, dark and murky wasn't, and there was no really compelling tension in the movie, nor any reason to view the characters as sympathetic, or not, but rather as two dimensional caricatures.

Great idea, poor execution... similar to Star Wars Episode 1, which got too caught up in the computer animation and special effects and didn't present a decent, compelling storyline and "real" characters. Perhaps, the best part of the story/dialog was to use song lyrics from (mostly) recognizable pop songs (or was this used just to attract the twenty/thirty-something demographics?).

Unless you're really curious about the "extras" in the DVD package, check out "Moulin Rouge" by John Huston. For better stories/dancing/singing with a similar theme, start with Shirley MacLaine (a real "triple threat") in "Sweet Charity," "Can-Can", or "Irma la Douce."

Almost all fluff and no bite, especially when compared to previous versions of "Moulin Rouge," or similarly themed movies. Very good DVD product packaging, quality, and content.

Summary: A Movie Musical Experience!
Review: The Moulin Rouge movie and DVD are works of art! Even the box is very artistic. I have not been a big fan of the movie musical, but this movie has risen to the top of my list.

After seeing the movie in the theater, I immediately wanted to see it again because there is so much to see in many scenes. The songs blend so well with the story that you can tell what's happening in the movie when you hear the song. The acting, singing, and choreography are breath-taking.

The DVD provides bonus features such as music videos, the HBO Making feature, and a Behind the Red Velvet Curtain version to learn about the history and technology.

Although it's a sad movie, it's invigorating to watch and provides an inspiring theme of truth, beauty, freedom, and most of all LOVE!

Summary: Waste of Time and Money
Review: My husband and I got through the first 15 minutes of this movie and turned it off. I cannot even describe why it is so bad. Lack of storyline, bad acting..to name a few.....Do not bother with this one!

Summary: A Magnificent musical phenomenon has returned!
Review: No musical is as spectacular as this dizzy remake of Moulin Rouge. A very unique, modern, and magical musical takes the viewer to Paris back when the old dance house of astonishing performances was open. You can live the magic or you can call just another excuse for a musical, but forgetting it isn't something you are bound to do. Nothing can make you forget this movie. Great songs, settings, and a great ensemble of cast and crewmemebers make this musical a great one. A work of pure vision, it is hard to not get touched by it. A romantic yet funny tale with a musical and touching story, this is not your average musical. So different and strange, so magical and so fast, this is one movie that should get a high recommendation. Moulin Rouge is what I think of as an unforgettable musical and Luhrmann's greatest work. Brilliantly made and diverse, this movie is one you should own.

Summary: This is terrible
Review: Never in my life have I seen such a piece of garbage. I heard good reviews about it from my friends, and so I decided to check it out. I cannot believe this is averaging 4.5 stars. I wish I could give this piece of junk a zero. This is the worst plot and worst acting I have seen for some time. I honestly cannot think of a worse movie on this entire earth. Trust me, this blows. Absolutely HORRID.
